Studio SWEAT

Love you from 350+ miles away! Being able to workout from home… and actually enjoy it… has saved me! I was in SD late last summer and I really wanted to pop in and take a live class. Never made it but I will this year, I hope!

I just finished up the SpinSculpt class and it was so much fun! It was actually refreshing that there were only 3 people total in the class because we were able to do TRX circuits and it was a lot more easy and fun with less people. We did the first 25 minutes on the bike, riding to music (sprints, hills, flat road). Then for the next 25 minutes we did 3 circuits which consisted of TRX (chest/​arms), medicine ball (burpees/​planks/​crunches) and different variations of squats/​jumps/​lunges down the AstroTurf. For the last 10 minutes, we were back on the backs doing a hill climb and sprints (once again, to music). We stretched it out for the last few minutes and then we were off! The instructor (heaven forbid, I forgot her name already) was very sweet and gave us plenty of water breaks and made sure that our form was on point. The gym was very clean and I’m curious to come back and see what the classes are like with more people in them.
The only reason this review is getting 4 stars and not 5, is because when I initially got there, I wasn’t sure where to go. When you first walk in, you basically walk into a hallway. If you go to the left, it’s locker rooms, if you go straight it’s stairs (which I don’t know where they lead to), and if you go to the right, it’s a martial arts gym. I stood at what I thought was the front desk for a few minutes. There was a guy behind the desk w/​a laptop and he was on his phone. I thought this was where I was supposed to check in, so I stood there for awhile and he never once glanced up at me. Thankfully, a lady standing next to me asked if I had a question and i told her I was here for a Studio Sweat class and she directed me down the hallway to the correct check in desk.
Can’t wait to come back tomorrow for the SpinCore class! :)

The barre studio that I go to recently closed down so I’m trying to look for other studios to go to on my weekends.
I signed up for the Spin, Sculpt, and TRX Saturday class and I finally was able to get in after being on the waiting list. I had been meaning to try this class for a while, but it was always so full, even way before you could even sign up on their website. I found out that the people who do show up get priority for the following week. That just sounds a little unfair. I don’t like the idea of fighting for the class. When I signed up, there were 11 other people who were on the waiting list. So why can’t they just offer the class at more times then?
Studio SWEAT shares the same building with a youth jiu jitsu group and a female volleyball team so the facility is a little too big for my liking. It definitely feels like a high school or recreational gymnasium where everyone shares the same space and is shouting so things are just loud in general. I go to a gym near my work in La Jolla during the week and I take the boot camps there. At the most, only ten people can take the class and I like that a lot better because it does feel you get a little more personal attention from the instructor. During my first class, I had no idea on where to go. There wasn’t anybody at the front desk, so I walked around and made my way to the back, which was where the class was held. I think the instructor was still trying to set up or get settled in because she didn’t talk nor noticed me. I’m just used to having instructors meeting their students and asking if we were new or if we had any injuries. I never took a spin class before, so I was adjusting all the knobs on my bike. Two girls next to me noticed that I was struggling, so they were kindly telling me what to do. I guess the instructor then realized that I was new by this time so she stood by me in case I had additional questions, which I didn’t anymore. Since there wasn’t anybody there to help me in the beginning, somebody eventually flagged me down at the end of class and made me fill out their waiver form.
Anyway, the class was okay. I guess spinning is not for me because it’s still a little too boring. Since I do the boot camps at the other gym near my work, I’m familiar with core conditioning and high intensity interval training exercises. The core and sculpting along with the TRX portion was also too repetitive and not interesting enough. Normally, the boot camps would go by really fast for me, but I found myself staring at the clock too many times and it just felt like a long 60 minutes.
I probably will give their Small Group Training class a try next.

Here is the update from April 2015, to my first post in December 2014. For the past 7 weeks, we have increased our spinning to 3 to 4 days per week. Since the increase, with very little change in my diet, I have lost a pound each and every week like clockwork. I am leaner today and weigh the same as I did 30 years ago. Yes, I’m that old! At the same time as increasing our number of classes, I purchased a heart rate monitor (HRM). The HRM also tracks your calories burnt. You program it for your age, height, weight, and gender. On Spin Sculpt days I am burning anywhere from 850 to 950 calories. Spin Core is a little lower in the 700 to 800 range. Last night’s Spin Sculpt was a killer, 60 minute workout and netted an all-​time high of 970 calories. Did I work hard… hell yes I did!
I believe the added class must have revved up my metabolism just enough to allow me to lose the additional pounds. BTW, I understand it’s easier for guys to burn the calories as we are bigger and have more muscle mass. My wife, who works as hard as I do, burns about 50% less than I do.
There is no substitute for hard work. And you’ll work hard at Studio Sweat. But the payoff is so rewarding. Great group of trainers and really nice people in class.
Another update… October 2015. It’s been nearly a year that we have been spinning. I’m not sure about my weight, as I haven’t been on a scale in 4 months. Although my thinner clothes still fit perfectly. We are still spinning 3 to 4 days a week and working hard at maintaining our fitness level. Special shout-​out to Mere, Bethany, Brooke and Brian. I figured it’s time to add to their perfect review! I’m back working out here after 2+ years. Thought I really hated spinning but when I decided to go back, Cat and Bethany really made it easy. I arrived early and got help adjusting my bike. The class was awesome! I would suggest spin/​sculpt because you get a kick butt workout! I feel good going at my own pace and working towards getting more comfortable. I’m tired and sweaty but always leave feeling terrific! Here to stay this time around.

What makes my experiences so great here Rebecca who teaches the 6:00am Spin and Sculpt classes. I can’t say enough about how motivating she truly is and it seems very genuine. Her classes were very face paced with 4 rounds going back and forth from resistance training on the floor doing plyo, using free weights and the TRX. She was great at keeping you on your toes and moving and she is basically kicking ass with you doing the entire class herself while keeping a watchful eye on your form… that is straight impressive.

I am an avid athlete, but need other workouts to keep me «interested» and spinning was a great outlet. Cat is great, although her classes tend to be sold out, so be prepared to sit on a waitlist to get in one of hers. I often take Bethany’s Spin classes and love Brooke’s motivational talk during TRX spin classes. Best soundtrack around– really gets you pumped up and ready to work hard. Overall, great value, and a great supplement to my other workouts.

Brooke’s TRX cardio class is on par with a crossfit class and excellent for strength. Spin classes are great too.
The service here is much better than any other gym in the immediate area. The schedule seems to be getting better in terms of posting all the small workout group, spin classes and TRX on one schedule. The owner is super to work with when you have a unique request or challenge.
This gym does not offer the more common studio gym scheduling service (aka mindbodyonline) which has pros and cons.

I’ve been spinning for about 5 years or so. and never had trainer/​instructors like these. Cat is outstanding and really passionate about her studio. Their spinning classes are not what you get at a regular gym. your constantly measuring your heart rate and working on core and sculpting your body. I easily burn around 500 – 750 cals on average with every class. Keep up the good work ladies!

Let me start by saying I had never done a spin class in my life and was super intimidated (and absolutely terrified) because of how out of shape I was before taking these classes. I LOVE studio sweat! I look forward to each class (even when I’ve literally just rolled out of bed) and by the end of each session I am dripping in sweat! Bethany totally kicks my butt each class and encourages me to push myself to my fullest potential (which I love). It’s definitely pricey-​$ 97 for 10 classes, but I find myself signing up each time my 10 classes run out because I love the workout so much. I love the small sized classes, and the music is great too!

This class gets me pumped. Great spinSculpt — I may try the other classes too.
To clarify, I am NOT a spinner and I was intimidated when my friends asked me to go. But I was pleasantly surprised! The cost /​flexibility are definitely worth it to me. I was paying $ 30 a month for frogs fitness but StudioSweat is a lot better. Since the classes are so small it’s almost like having a personal trainer.
I’ve taken with Bethany and Cat — love their classes. I still don’t consider myself a huge spinner but I do like the fact that I’m working out (and having fun doing it!)

I love spinning and wanted to get back into it after having my baby — but I hated waiting in a long line at LA Fitness hoping you’d get a bike even if you got there an hour early to be #20 in line… same for 24 hour fitness. So I decided to try Studio Sweat, even though I was paying a membership at LA Fitness… and I fell in love with spinning again. Not only are the teachers great but they are super helpful and extremely motivating! Also their playlists are DOPE!!! For me, great music = a great workout. I’ve tried both the Core and Sculpt classes and both kick my butt and I’m always sore, even up to a few days after. They have classes all throughout the day and even on weekends which fits my busy schedule. Can’t wait until I’m done with school so I can join their fit and training camps. I LOVE STUDIO SWEAT!

A great no-​nonsense place to get an intense hour workout in without usual annoyances and socializing at LA Fitness. Both spin and boot camp are extremely efficient at making use of your precious time. Cat is a great instructor and is very interested in her clients development as an athlete. I love that there is no registration and that you pay as you go. A great place to exercise.

Definitely not an average spin class. The combo classes are awesome and really make for a total body workout! You hit some hard cardio and work all your major muscle groups in a 1 hr class. Love the hour long class. The SS instructors teach a class that packs a punch.
The training sessions are also all encompassing and they target your fitness from all directions including schedule and nutrition. I wasn’t expecting so much support and education for my fitness and I love it!

My wife and I have been battling the bulge for years so we joined Weight Watchers. It was good and we stabilized our weight gain. It taught us how to eat healthy and make better food choices, but, it was just that «a commitment». Then, my Wife, was told by a friend that could not say enough about a work out group that was actually fun. She went the few times and loved it. There were men and women of all ages and sizes. I noticed that my Wife, looked better and not because of the weight she was losing, however, her attitude and confidence. She convinced me to try it so I went, and yes it was challenging, but very fun and encouraging. The group comes together and made me feel very welcome and fostered that «get up and go» in myself that had «got up and went» years ago. At age 49, I cannot recommend this enough for anyone wanting to get out and get into better shape. They encourage eating well and exercising to get a balance in life. Love it. Thanks Kat!

A huge shout out to all the people at Studio Sweat. I have joined one of the «Fit Camps» about 6 months ago and, though have never been a real exercise person, have had so much fun doing the camps. They make it so much fun by gently pushing you at your own pace. I look forward to it three times a week and every work out is different. They have all kinds of classes for every skill level.
I have always wanted to do a mini triathlon and never thought I could do it. I joined a class and we all finished! At the finish line everyone greeted each other and I have never had such a great experience.
I am now hooked on a very healthy lifestyle and it all started with Cat Kom, the owner, by being very caring and motivating.

Calling all SPIN lovers !!!

So hearing about a neighborhood studio that specializes in spinning really got me STOKED and UBER EGGCITED !

‘Spin Sculpt’ is one of the classes that appealed to me. It incorporates both spin and weights. Noice ! The instructor, Cat was awesome and I’m pretty picky with my instructors. I loved Cat’s format, routine, and most importantly, MUSIC !
Spin bikes are the latest versions and I feel like I’m getting a better workout from it. It’s refreshing to try something different other than the typical spin class you would take at the gym. It’s a smaller group setting and seats are limited, but once you get a spot, you’ll have a bike reserved for you every time you attend. If you’re a spin lover like me or even thinking of starting, you should definitely give ‘Studio Sweat’ a trial run. Did I mention the first class is FREE ??? So there really is no excuse peoples.

Instructors at Studio Sweat are motivating and classes are challenging– you really do improve every day! I’m always surprised how much energy I get from every class I take. It’s not just about losing weight, it’s also about getting endurance, strength, and of course it shapes your entire body!
Just be sure to bring a big bottle of water, towel, and great attitude– you won’t regret!!!

I’ve attempted to work out on my own for years — but until I found Studio Sweat, I didn’t realize how ineffective it was. I’ve loved the boot camp and spinning classes — the pay as you go «punch cards» make it easy to fit into my busy schedule so I can go more often when time permits. I participated in the summer shredder program and lost 9 lbs, 5 inches off my waist and 3.3 percent body fat in 5 WEEKS! I have also stepped up my game from running in 5K races to a half marathon. Currently training in the Studio Sweat half marathon program as well! Thanks to the trainers and the many friends I’ve made at the studio, it has improved my life! Try a class out — you will never regret it!

Studio Sweat is life-​changing! I hadn’t worked out in 6 years and took Cat’s Fit Camp. In 4 weeks I was back in tip-​top shape, lost 3lbs but more importantly lost 2 inches in my waist! and 3% body fat (18 to 15%). I love that I can sign up for a class and pay as I go. Even better — there are only 12 people in each class. The trainers are CERTIFIED and FUN! It’s never the «same ol class» — every workout (and song!) is different.

When I moved from UTC to Rancho Bernardo and had to leave the Sporting Club behind, I was sad! I loved that club — especially relaxation near the pool, cabanas, access to the massage and facials. It always felt like I was working out then going on vacation. Enough of what I miss, now that I found this new club … I am living in the present again. No regrets.
We’re not comparing apples to apples … okay?
This new club is about SWEAT. These spin classes rock! The bikes are the latest and greatest spinning bikes. You can clip in or wear your tennies. The instructors are fantastic, Cat and Meredith.
I must qualify that there isn’t a shower, jacuzzi, massage, facials, pool … just a great place to workout!
Not only are there awesome spin classes available like Spin Sculpt which will kick your a**. There is Boot Camp and ½ Marathon Training. For the ligher hearted, there is Pilates.
This club is the answer to my dreams … no more weight woes. I take spin three times a week. Even signed up for the ½ Marathon training. Ayayay. What did I get myself into?
They are supportive and motivational.
No membership fees or contracts. You pay when you go. Also, I like their system, people who go to class get priority to sign up for the next weeks’ class. If you reserved a space, it is saved for you. No worrying about whether there’ll be space for you.
One last draw, there are some options for your kiddo’s. I bring my daughter. She plays in a separate room while I work out.
