Spirit Yoga

Wow! I have attended multiple yoga studios in San Diego and Orange County and fell in love with this studio. There is only one room enough to fit may be 25 – 30 students. Went to several different classes taught by a variety of instructors. I was surprised to see so many different instructors teaching per week! They definitely have many, many great instructors who really focus on the spiritual aspect of yoga, which have been lost in several studios. As much as the physical benefits of yoga is valued, yoga is set apart from the rest because of the spiritual foundation that yoga is found upon. I am a big fan of hands-​on adjustments and was able to receive deeper stretches with proper alignment. Thank you for sparking my interest in yoga again! You guys know what you are doing. Keep up the good work and I hope you guys continue to implement the spiritual development during practice! Parking is across the street for those wondering where to park. I was confused about that my first time going.

Spirit Yoga is special. All the instructors here are fun, light-​hearted and knowledgeable. The space is my favorite; it’s always clean, has live flora, uses natural lighting by day and candlelight by night. Even though the instructors are all amazing in their own right, they all have their own style, which gives students the freedom to mix things up throughout the week. I would recommend this studio to anyone looking for peaceful, welcoming yoga classes with awesome music, a wide variety of flows, and caring instructors. Thanks Spirit Yoga :)

I LOVE Spirit. It’s hard to find a studio that consistently offers challenging classes that still embody a peaceful mind AND leave space for fun.
I trained as a teacher in NYC where the yoga is really strong, and find SD has a lot of really predictable sequencing (not a negative thing necessarily). Spirit keeps me on my toes no matter who’s teaching.
Basically, it’s my favorite studio, and I try one new studio every week. Spirit = 1 in a million

Started with a friendly greeting by Meghan! Then she told me there is no charge (first week is free, even for out of state visitors). Then my daughter and I went into the awesome yoga room (very clean and uncluttered with great lighting for the space). Megan taught a beautiful practice (vinyasa 2)! She had great music, great sequences, great adjustments (even manipulated my muscles after a hard back pose), and all around awesome hour and fifteen minutes! I decided to try Spirit again the next day. Daniele instructed the vinyasa 2 class with lots of knowledge and created a customized class since there were a couple requests from students (hips and triangle poses). Excellent experiences for both classes I attended. Cool place with cool vibes!

Spirit will forever have my yoga heart. I practiced at this studio for over 2 years regularly. All the instructors have different and wonderful styles of teaching. Their Vinyassa 2 classes are challenging and offer many opportunities to explore inversions. Meghan, Hellen, Sarah and Brad all offer amazing classes, but all the instructors that offer classes are warm and welcoming. Whether you are a beginner yogi, or an advanced yogi this studio has something for everyone. So much love.

If you walk into a Yoga studio and they are playing top 20 hits during a class you can tell either of 2 things. They were either trained at Core Power Yoga or they dont have clue what Yoga is. So I left. Prana in La Jolla Tim Miller and a few others are real «teachers «in the area. This place is better than Core Power (which is aerobics with loud music and steam) but they fall short on approach. 200 hr wonders are flooding the market and Yoga is suffering

I was in San Diego for a few days and got to check out this studio and the one across the street. Spirit Yoga is definitely my type of place — cozy, welcoming, small, custom tailored. I took Vinyasa 2 with Melissa and loved it! The sequence was challenging enough and Melissa was very helpful giving great adjustments and tips.
If i lived in San Diego I would definitely be a regular at this place.
Oh and did I mention I got 1 full week free, plus a mat and a towel. A+++

This place is really cool! They give you a very generous free week which I thought was awesome. Of course I told myself I would go everyday pff. Yeh I went once! I want to do the Reggae Flow though looks cool! Parking was a pain in the butt. Inside was cool, although since I was a newbie I put my mat down under the hanging plants, lol… bad idea every time I reached my arms up I hit the plant pot. (too tight in there to move)
When I got there, the lady showed me around. Granted it wasnt the best time to give me a tour but she showed me everything in 30 seconds while another class just ended, so I was literally climbing over swetty people trying to catch up with her to see where the bathrooms were. Since it was dark, hot and slippery I literally almost broke my neck tripping over someone’s block.
I will go back for sure. But I can totally see what the other reviewers mean by «competitive vibe.» Its PB so the deuchbag levels are high, what are you gonna do… I find myself really focusing on the drive and parking as a seller. If my stress levels increase after yoga because of over stimulation and dramatic parking it kind of defeats the purpose but if you live local I can see how this place would be great. I live in OB so the thought of Garnet sometimes is too intense.
I like that they have Reggae and Hip Hop Flows, how original!

Spirit Yoga is my happy place. I have tried most of the yoga studios in the area and this is, hands down, my favorite yoga studio in PB.
The teachers are awesome, the classes are challenging yet relaxing. The teachers frequently ask for requests at the beginning of class, allowing personalized classes. They have a good variety of level 1, 2 and 2/​3, so anyone can find a class, and most classes are 75 minutes. At other studios i am often one of the more advanced students, and here I am not even close, which I like because it pushes me. Classes are heated and humid — due to the live plants all over — so be prepared to sweat. And the music! Music is teacher’s choice, and I have heard everything from rock and roll to country to typical yoga/​spa music. I rarely remember the individual songs, but the variety really energizes the room and the students through the class. Sometimes they have themed classes that play hip/​hop or reggae music throughout the class. There is a big skylight that let’s in a touch of light, and on the rare occasion that it rains, you can hear the relaxing ping of rain throughout class.
For newbies, the first 10 days are free. After that the pricing is still amazing, better than any other studio in San Diego (and for higher quality and longer classes at that). They also have some level 1 classes for $ 5. And if you buy a package the classes never expire.

I absolutely love this place. The instructors are so talented in their craft. They all seem very pleased to teach, very peaceful, and what’s most important for me as a beginner is to understand what to do and their instruction has me learning faster than I every thought I could. This place is very clean, pretty inside, has this amazing peaceful energy, and I just love it! First timers get their first 10 days for free. This is my yoga home for sure.

Great ambiance, great prices, and the nicest instructors around.
Nothing but nice people here, the instructors play great music, and make you feel welcome. They even have a 5 $ walk-​in class at 330p most days. Highly recommend Alex Weir’s class. She has great taste in tunes, weaves in an interesting flow each time, and helps you work on intentions/​mantras if you wish.
Signing bowl use at the end of class is also a huge plus.

I should have reviewed this studio two years ago when I started going.
It is literally one of the best studios in San Diego. Period.
All the instructors are really friendly and knowledgeable and they come up with some really fun and creative flows. They are also up for requests and some nights the music switches to hip hip/​rap which is sun a fun change.
I live in north county but frequently travel to Spirit just because I love it so much. Needless to say it is really affordable and the studio is visually appealing and cozy.

I’m relatively new to yoga but I have a sports and weight training background. Just started incorporating yoga into my routine and I love it! I’ve tried several hot yoga places and they have ranged between being too easy to I am about to faint. In my opinion spirit yoga has a great middle ground for beginners in their Vinyasa 1 class. Perfect temperature, great instructors, and just a good vibe overall. Everyone that goes here is friendly too and I feel great after every session. I think I’m ready for a Vinyasa 2 class and I’m happy that I found this yoga studio!

Boyfriend and I were in town for a half marathon. Wanted to get in a yoga session for a good stretch. The studio was very clean and Heather, our instructor, was great! It was heated, but not unbearable. Would definitely come back if we lived in SD!

I will embarrassingly admit, my first time entering the studio I was a few minutes late and rushed on in without introducing myself. I was greeted by the friendly Mr. Alex Weir, chuckling at my panicky-​self trying to zen it out before Vinyasa 2. He assured me that there was still room and that the studio usually waits 3 – 4 minutes to begin class, for all you stragglers out there. I simply put down my name on a waiver and off I went (no 2 page «please initial here and here and here» nonsense).
I tried the 10 day free pass and fell in love by day 2.
LAYOUT/​ENVIRONMENT
The studio has one room, however don’t be alarmed, it can fit plenty of people. The room itself is filled with plants along the walls, and is kept at a rather humid atmosphere to keep those gorgeous plants alive. The back has changing rooms, cubbies, a unisex bathroom, yoga blocks/​straps, and a water station. I suppose the only con about this place is the lack of shower stalls, however I’m sure renovations will be coming in the near future.
CLASSES/​INSTRUCTORS
Having taken the majority of their offered classes, I can say that the instructors are very high quality and genuinely care for your well-​being. They will consistently ask how you’re doing, if you’re in need of any healing, want to focus on a certain pain-​spot, and even conduct in real-​humanlike conversations. WOW! (I will callout Brad for showcasing some incredible deep hip-​openers and not being shy with inversions). However, regardless of class, time, or instructor, you will walk out learning something new each and every single day. They are not afraid to give hands-​on help, but will respect your space if requested. A suggestion I would offer is for the instructors to offer some more mind-​body-​spirit inspirational quotes/​insights throughout the class.

Spirit Yoga also offers trade yoga sessions, work/​clean for a few hours for free yoga classes. Also, during the summer, Spirit Yoga also teams up with Paddle Board Yoga which is conducted in Mission Bay, right down the road from Pacific Beach. They offer stellar paddle board yoga classes for only $ 20, $ 10 if you have membership with Spirit Yoga. Oh, and they also have glow in the dark paddle board tours.
Most definitely, favorite yoga studio in San Diego.

I first heard about Spirit through Steve from Ocean Front yoga on Law Street and I’m so glad I checked it out. Spirit has just about everything you could look for in a yoga studio. They take into consideration all five senses from sight, sound, smell, touch and even taste (they have a detox and «re-​tox» night!)
As an interior designer things like how a space makes you feel is really important… especially when you pick a studio. Oh and whenever you arrive, they always have a smile and hug ready for ya! It’s a really awesome community to be a part of! Don’t forget to check out Paddle board yoga it should be AWESOME!

Came here for the first time to celebrate my birthday with some backlight yoga! The staff was so accommodating to me and my friends. They give you free glow sticks and glow paint and the studio looks really cool with everyone glowing. They also give out free wine afterwards; although, you may be too dehydrated afterwards to even drink it! They keep their studio pretty warm, so expect to sweat a lot! Great work-​out! Additionally, you get 10 free consecutive days of yoga as a first-​time yogi, so I came back to try a couple of other classes. Can’t afford a yoga membership at the moment, but I love this studio so much and will definitely be back for some drop in sessions! Thanks again for an awesome experience Spirit Yoga!

Beautiful, warm and welcoming studio. Found out that if you’ve never been before the first 10 days are free, yay! I already thought the pricing here was fabulous — I mean making yoga accessible to all is on the top of my list. They also have community classes for $ 5.
I was greeted so pleasantly by Alex and another yogi, who was a regular, not like some places where people keep to themselves. I’ll be back for sure!

I was visiting San Diego and decided to check out Spirit Yoga for some early 6am classes. First of all, it’s great that they even offer classes that early. A lot of places don’t open till 8 or 9, which is too late for people that have 9 – 5 jobs.
I was lucky enough to take classes with both Sarah and James. Both were very friendly and welcoming. And since class sizes are smaller at 6am, I was able to get a lot of personal attention and assistance. Both Sarah and James were wonderful in talking through transitions and creating an early AM practice that was challenging, but also very relaxing and fun.
The space is very calming and I loved practicing with plants and a skylight.
Will definitely be go back when I visit San Diego again. Thank you, Spirit Yoga!

An okay studio with some really well-​known instructors in the San Diego area. There’s actually more that I dislike about this studio than I like, but I’ll start with elaborating what the positives, which is why this place is getting 3 stars instead of 2.
A couple of my favorite instructors have taught/​are teaching here, and I’m happy that there is a place in Pacific Beach that offers classes to the public. In all honesty, I always felt a little uncomfortable that yoga is so expensive and exclusive. I feel grateful that I can afford to do drop-​ins and memberships at various studios, but I know there are a lot of people who can’t, which is a shame since I believe yoga should be for everyone. Here you can pay what you can. There are no membership fees and I believe if you don’t have cash, you can barter (? I could be wrong about this, but you may want to ask… not that I have anything to barter, lol).
Advanced yogis: please note that this is still a relatively new studio. The classes here are on the easier side and you won’t be doing anything crazy in their Level 2 or Level ²⁄₃ classes. Which is fine because I don’t expect to do hard classes all the time. That’s not what yoga’s about. With the instructors trained at CP, you might expect more of a CorePower workout than an actual practice. Just my personal experience. Because their competitor is essentially CorePower (which is right across from them), I’m not surprised.
If you want a decent yoga experience, I strongly recommend taking classes from Helen Cloots, Meghan Kruljac, and Rachel Lubich. I’ve also heard great things about Jenn Richardson. I hate to say this, but I was NOT happy with taking classes from the instructors who were CorePower certified, although this is simply my preference (I refuse to name names, but if you’re a CorePower regular or familiar with the sequence, you’ll know who I’m referring to)…I’m sure other people enjoy their classes, though. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that a little over half of the instructors who teach regularly here are from CorePower. So basically you’re paying for a CorePower class for a fraction of CP’s membership cost. That and parking is a nightmare here as it is in the heart of PB.
Another thing I dislike about this studio is that I feel like the people who practice here are VERY competitive, which is odd because this isn’t CorePower. Is it because there is a mirror? I’ve practiced at other studios where I was surrounded with students who were MUCH more advanced and experienced than the Spirit Yoga regulars and I don’t get that competitive vibe at other studios than I do over at Spirit. I’ve experienced this more than once at Spirit and it leaves a slightly bad taste in my mouth. If you’re coming in for the «spiritual» aspect of yoga… it’s lacking here. I’ve been told by one instructor that she has to «lighten up» on the philosophy because the students here tend to glaze over it and not pay attention. I find that ironic, given the studio’s name.
Also, I’m pretty sure I’m the only naysayer here, but that studio space gets SO hot. 85 degrees is the most I can tolerate; anything higher than that makes me sick. I’ve seen the thermostat and the temperature fluctuates between 87 and 95 degrees. Is the temperature purposely high because everyone here is a CorePower practitioner and will get upset if the AC gets turned on briefly? Not that I like to practice cold yoga (I hate beach yoga for that reason) but I have a very physically demanding practice and I can assure you you do not need a hot room to practice yoga, especially if you want to learn how to invert. External heat gives off a false sense of flexibility and it won’t make you learn complex postures any faster.
I don’t see myself coming here too often because it’s in PB, which is a neighborhood I’m not really a fan of (which is probably why most of the students here are vain and competitive), and I live quite a distance away. If I’m visiting friends, I may go here for fun as there are a couple teachers here I like, but I’m not particularly motivated to go out of my way and practice here regularly. I know this place was created with good intentions and I respect that (hence I do feel bad about leaving a 3 star review), but after taking multiple classes and being impressed with only a handful of teachers, I’m going to pass for the most part.
