Seabreeze Organic Farm

I just moved to La Jolla from NYC several days ago and I am without a car. For someone who is new to the area and craving local fresh food but is limited by transportation– this is as good as it gets! I am one person and the petite CSA is perfect. The flowers are beautiful, the portions are perfect, the produce is fresh, and the selection is fun and diverse. If you are a picky eater, this may not be your calling, but hey no one option is perfect in our food market, today. There is trade-​off. Sure, there are plastic bags used and sure it costs a pretty penny, but I choose to eat fresh preservative-​free, organic, and local no matter what the food item is! And I am still amazed that this farm is only a 12 minute drive or so from my apartment. You can’t beat that. Lets support our local farmers! I know I will continue to order from Seabreeze from years to come. Thank you! Thank you!

This weekend I went to the Seabreeze Organic Farm for their Mother’s Day Pick-​a-​Bouquet event. This was a fabulous experience for me!!! For $ 25 I was able to go to the farm with clippers and a vase and go pick whatever flowers tickled my fancy and make a gorgeous bouquet. They had a huge selection of flowers to choose from and they are all pesticide free. There were so many of my favorites including Foxgloves, Sweet Peas, Bachelor Buttons, Rose of Sharon, Statice, Delphinium, Snapdragons, Sunflowers, Daisies and on and on. Strolling around the gardens was a feast for my eyes with all of the beauty and they have Ducks and Chickens and goats too. There were hummingbirds, colorful birds, bees and butterflies everywhere. They had a little Farmer’s Market set up with fresh organic veggies and my friends and I went home with bags of goodies. They also had fresh eggs and goat cheese available. They had a table with pre-​arranged bouquets of flowers and the most beautiful nosegays for purchase. The staff was super friendly and helpful too. I had emailed the farm prior to the event to ask a question and two different people called me back right away and answered my questions.
I look forward to my next visit to the farm. It is a beautiful sanctuary.

I belonged to SeaBreeze CSA a few years back and when we moved we were not in their delivery area. I joined another organic CSA and found I had been spoiled by the large variety SeaBreeze included in their deliveries. After 2 years I realized I could have the delivery sent to my work instead of home. This has been perfect as I added eggs as well and can put everything in the fridge. I have been to the farm and SeaBreeze hits all the high notes for quality, variety, freshness and passion for what they do. BRAVO — So happy to be a member again.

We just started using their delivery service a few weeks ago and love it! First of all, the produce is delicious. The strawberries taste like candy. Secondly, we love the variety — Items we don’t usually get, but really enjoy. The fresh flowers are a nice touch. I wondered about the prices so I took the list of what we got to Jimbo’s to compare and it was about even, when you subtract the delivery charge. And it is pretty nice to have fresh, locally grown, healthy produce delivered right to your door saving time and gas. Overall, we are big fans. We hope to visit the farm soon.

I have been a Seabreeze member for years. I love it. My CSA has helped me culture a healthy diet all while eating locally and seasonally. The produce is always top quality, the selection is great, and considering the the fact that it’s organic and delivered to my home weekly, the price is wonderful. I read the other review that was complaining she could get more bang for her buck at the local farmers market… well, maybe that’s true… but you have to GO there, and it’s not all organic. So, it’s really not comparable at all.
I receive so much food in my bag every week for the price, that it amazes me they are able to stay in business! The fruit is SO flavorful… most amazing oranges. Today, I had wonderful blueberries and will be making amazing soup from the squash and kale.
Also, the customer service is remarkable. These are truly kind people running this business and I am honored to share in their farm.

The reasons I chose to become a member:
1. Service — I had contacted them on several occasions by e-​mail and all my requests and questions had been answered in timely manner. The owner Stephenie and the staff Donna and Bob are very friendly and responsive. It is such a pleasure dealing with them.
2. Delivery — Not many farms will deliver to your home or work place, but they do. Many zip codes included! That was actually a big concern for me since I can’t pick up groceries during the day, so they deliver to my work place Downtown SD. Always prompt.
3. Grocery selection — It’s great to have choices! There are different programs you can sign-​up for. You can choose «Regular» delivery which includes assortment of seasonal vegetables, fruits and herbs. But you can also «Choose you own» option that allows you to select any specific items you wish. Again, most farms don’t have that option. This is a big plus!
4. Grocery quality — Overall very good and some are excellent! Its fresh and tasty! Love their tomatoes. You can taste the difference. Mixed salad with edible flowers is also my favorite. I had some concerns about collard greens turning yellow after 3 days and addressed that issue. Again, excellent customer service and they offered to replace the greens.
5. Fresh flowers — What a nice feminine touch! Aromatic, fresh flowers make me smile every time. I keep them on my desk at work the whole week and my customers always comment on them. Sometimes the aroma makes my whole shop smell lovely!
6. The cost of groceries is about the same I would pay at the organic section at the Supermarket.
7. Reliability — There are certain greens I have to have every single week: 5 – 7 bundles of collard greens, 2 kale and other greens. The problem with the supermarkets is that they are not reliable about having certain greens in stock and they always run out of greens that are a MUST HAVE for me. Seabreeze farms had been always reliable and always delivered the specific amounts of greens I ordered. HUGE plus for me! I no longer have to scavenge supermarkets for the specific greens and vegetables.
Overall, it shows that people who own and operate this farm truly care about their farm, their customers and good cause behind organically grown produce. It is very obvious that they work hard to produce the best produce and make their customers happy.

I started getting the Seabreeze CSA box about 14 years ago. Because of my travel schedule I couldn’t get though all of the food while I was in town so I stopped getting the box. Ofcourse, back then I didn’t eat as many veggies as I do now. I’m a strong believer in eating locally produced food and Seabreeze does a beautiful job of providing some of the best in San Diego. One trip to the farm and you will understand how much care & love goes into everything they grow & cultivate. And, if you have questions about why or how they do something on the farm or how you should cook or store the fruit or vegetables you got just ask.

I began my Seabreeze weekly delivery two years ago. I was in search of convenient, healthy, local food, and I have never been disappointed. Everything is fresh and delicious! I don’t eat meat, but I love the eggs from Seabreeze because they do not kill the chickens on the farm. They are the best eggs I have ever had.

Seabreeze has been our CSA for about a year now. We’ve also explored some others with pick up points, we have shopped at farmer’s markets all over North County and even Little Italy’s Marcado. I find that when I go to farmer’s market i can easily spend over $ 100.00 — on fruit and veggies alone. I buy organic only — did you know that not all stalls at the farmer’s market are organic? Everything from Seabreeze is organic. You might think — organic — oh that’s a gimmick — it isn’t folks. Pesticides and herbicides are a real danger to our ecology. The more of us who insist on our produce being clean the lower the prices will be!
I have a family of 4 — our weekly grocery bag is just enough to keep us in fruits and veggies for the week. I make sure we eat all of the colors of the rainbow every day and the bag from Seabreeze provides that for us at a reasonable cost.
The same amount of food ordered from some online organic groceries can run you upward of $ 120.00!
All of the produce is seasonal so it rotates — the other bonus over many other CSAs in the area is variety… I can use everything I get. I’ve also preserved many of the items in abundance such as cucumbers — who doesn’t love homemade pickles?
I’ve been to the farm several times and love it so much I brought my son’s kinder class their — the parents and teachers said it was the best field trip ever. They learned so much about bio-​dynamic farming.
Why do i appreciate it and like it so much?
besides the various fresh produce I understand that it is very difficult to run an organic/​bio-​dynamic farm — you can’t use pesticides or herbicides, you must use special methods to keep your farm producing properly — plus farms like Seabreeze are also homesteads so property taxes are applicable here. Plus — you have to have people to run the farm! There are all kinds of FDA regulations you must abide by in order to keep operating as well.
Seabreeze has done a wonderful job in creating and maintaining a sustainable, organic, friendly business. I highly recommend their CSA if you are part of their community SUPPORT THEM!

After reading the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, I was inspired to sign up for Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). I searched the website
to find the closest CSA to my house, and it was Seabreeze Organic Farm. The main idea of a CSA is that community members pay a recurring fee to a local farm. In turn, that farm delivers fresh, seasonal produce grown at that farm to it’s subscribers. Thus, less petroleum is used transporting produce long distances, the produce is fresh, ripe, and flavorful, and local farmers and the local economy are supported. CSAs, in theory, are healthy for the environment, local farmers, consumers, and the local economy.
I still support local farmers by buying locally grown produce at farmers’ markets, farm stands, and the People’s food co-​op in Ocean Beach. I canceled my CSA subscription to the Seabreeze Organic Farm. My reasons are as follows:
1. Extremely poor value: I signed up for «Option 3 — Large CSA Delivery Every Other Week» for $ 63.00 per delivery. For $ 63.00, they deposit ONE (1) regular sized grocery store paper bag full of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and once a few eggs, in front of my door (they do not ring the door bell, so the bag spends hours heating up and wilting in the sun unless I wait nearby the front door to hear them knock).
I did an experiment to see how much locally grown organic or sustainable produce I could buy at the Mira Mesa Farmers’ Market, and I was able to purchase approximately NINE (9) bags full of local produce for $ 63.00. Try a similar experiment for yourself if you are a Seabreeze CSA member.
2. The paper bag they deliver is filled with numerous plastic bags and containers made of a stiff foam polymer. Even McDonald’s stopped using this style of containers long ago because they are challenging to recycle! I’m trying to help the environment, so I want to reduce my use of plastic and stiff foam polymer packaging. I wish Seabreeze would use recyclable cardboard, compostable plastic, or reusable packaging instead. I bring my own reusable cotton bags to farmers’ markets, People’s co-​op, etc. when I shop.
3. Many of the items in Seabreeze’s CSA delivery (and sold at their farm stand) are NOT locally grown at all! Thus, $ 63.00 buys LESS THAN ONE full grocery bag of locally grown produce, with the balance of the full bag grown non-​locally. For example, one delivery contained several packages of organic berries that just said they were grown in the USA. Other deliveries included bananas and coconuts. This defeats the whole purpose of supporting local farms! I’ve shopped at Seabreeze’s farm stand, where they also sell produce that is not locally grown and packaged in stiff foam polymer containers. What is the point then? Why not just shop at any grocery store?
4. Both on Seabreeze’s web site and in the information packet they send subscribers in the mail, they have sleazy, cheesy advertisements for a gold broker and they want you to buy gold. This is this not related to local, sustainable, or organic agriculture in any way.
In conclusion, I feel frustrated and ripped off by Seabreeze Organic Farm. It’s much more economical to buy your locally grown produce elsewhere. Comparison shop for yourself.
