Residence Inn San Diego Mission Valley

I’ve stayed at other Residence Inn’s and can tell you from experience these places very by location. This one was a winner! The front desk staff was amazing which started our experience off on a high note, especially considering it was Christmas evening and if I were working that day I might be a bit somber. The room was clean with a king size bed and all the amenities you could expect at this price point. If I had paid 5 star prices this would be a much lower rating for the room, but 5 star service was experienced from the staff, Great Job!

A great choice for a large group! The suite included a kitchen, and 2 separate rooms (1 with a king sized bed, the other with twin bunks) and also had a pull out couch. For 5 girls, it was perfect! It was clean and nicely decorated. The staff is friendly, and It’s a very quick 5 min drive to old town. Great option for the price, would stay again and would recommend for sure!

Pros: Jeffrey who checked me in was a breath of fresh air after a very long day and getting lost to get to this place. He gave me a quick run down of where everything was located. The room was nice and clean. It was quiet.
Cons: Ridiculous $ 16 parking you have to pay for. Are you kidding me? Absorb that cost into the room fees and be better PR. Bed (King) sucked and was really uncomfortable. Personally, I would not stay here again in spite of Mr. Jeffrey who could probably find a way better job than this. This place is located on Hotel Circle so there are TONS of other options.

I love staying at this Residence Inn. Everyone here is extremely nice and accommodating. Great staff. Everyone has a great personality.
Food: The hot breakfast every morning is amazing. It varies enough so you don’t get bored. I stayed here about a month and enjoyed the breakfast everyday. The Tuesday night dinners are great. It changes from week to week. I’ve had grilled chicken, burgers, hot dogs,
The rooms… not a bad room in the hotel. The hotel is placed far enough from the main road so you don’t hear road noise from your room. The rooms are comfortable. The hotel is also pet friendly. When you check in, they give you a magnetic badge to put on the door that states «four legged guest inside». Pretty good idea. They also have free dog waste bags on the property.
If you ever get a chance to stay here, do it. You won’t be disappointed.

The problem I have with this situation is that after I had mentioned the need to do a more thorough cleaning, there was no «suggestion» to have us moved to another room. I guess I should have insisted, but I will NOT be returning to this Residence Inn. We’re not talking about a few bites, but dozens for each of us.

Different Residence Inn then I’ve ever stayed in. Probably lack of space to build out, so, they built up. Arrived early for check in, front desk did there best to accommodate our family. We hung out around the lobby and pool area for about 1 hour until a room (s) became available. Approx 1:10pm. The room (s) were both neat, clean, & tidy. I originally booked the 2 bedroom living room suite with the twin size bunk beds for our girls. MISTAKE Why? Well, the «twin «size was DEFINITELY designed for smaller children (or dwarfs!) The length of these beds are smaller than average size twin. However, there is a pull out couch in the living room that is a double size bed. As far as comfort goes, ALL beds, with the exception of the pull out, we’re very comfortable, with ample feather pillows as we have come to expect by Marriott. Kitchen is basic with electric stove top, microwave, decent size frig. Now here’s my beef… besides the bunk situation, the 2^nd bedroom is the size of a small walk in closet and I DOES NOT HAVE A 2ND BATHROOM AS I’VE COME TO EXPECT WITH THE 2 BEDROOM OPTION. This, however, is my bad. An over sight while booking. You know what they say about ASSUMING! The next thing is…

3 TOWELS!!? REALLY?!?
Overall, we’ve pre-​booked these accommodations for 2 future events. I’m considering a different hotel unless this one has a better set up and the $ doesn’t sky rocket!

Stayed here one night for a short staycation in San Diego. We chose this hotel mostly for the location. It was very central to the beaches, shopping, and bars in North Park. Great value for the price. We were put in a 1 bedroom suite with 2 queen beds and a pull out sofa bed. For having 5 adults in the room, we never felt cluttered.
Pros: Great location, clean and spacious rooms, free hot breakfast, full kitchen (full size fridge is a plus!)
Cons: $ 16 parking fee, lay out of the hotel takes some time getting used to — we were put in the back of the hotel on the 4^th floor and getting to the breakfast and lobby area was a pain in the a$$ since it rained. You had to go down to the 1^st floor, go outside past the pool to get to the building with the lobby.
Overall, we had a great quick stay here. Would definitely stay here again but will request a room near the lobby.

Absolutely horrible stay! Someone’ s cigarette smoke was so horribly strong that permeated my room. I had to put a towel down under the door gap to TRY to keep that horrid smell from inflaming a sinus infection that i had tackled with natural remedies, but stood no chance against that. virtually got no sleep to speak of. Had no dry bath towel this AM (They only provided 3, one was used under the door and the other 2 were damp from 3 showers I had take for the steam to rid my nose of that disgusting odor.
Staff were so unhelpful in resolving it. They never found out who it was (though they smelled it as well) and additionally, failed to pass it on to the next shift.
Having Fibromyalgia, I am essentially highly allergic to cigarette smoke coupled with the sinus infection, it was so uncalled for!
Sleep is all I wanted and PAID FOR. It totally impacts my immune system if I don’t get it and I did not consent to that with my dollars or signatures.
There is plenty they could have done!
I could not get through to the front desk at 3:30 am. Called several times.
Called back at 5:30 am and the desk clerk said he had been doing breakfast duty and was away.
He promised the GM would contact me at 7:30 to help make it right.
I confirmed asking him to ask the GM to leave a voice mail message on my cell phone in case I could sleep. He agreed.
Not only had the GM not done so, but even after having left that hotel hours ago, the «GM» (can he really be called that?) «who was aware of my situation but in and out of meetings» has NEVER even contacted me since.
I had to call Mr Mariott’s office myself and inform the secretary all that transpired and it was more than I have time to write now.
But she concured it was NOT handled on many levels as it should have been.
Shame on this hotel for a lack of what should matter most in a business: compassion and solid ethics, trwating hotel guests like they matter. Because without guests, of course, they have no job.
Im wondering wholeheartedly why they still do here.
Defunct is an understatement. But even worse, they are uncaring here, specifically management.
I’d suggest considering an alternative brand that values high quality, professionalism and responsive resolution.
You know, AKA, common human decency.

Have been staying here the last couple trips to San Diego and is very nice.
Free hot breakfast and good evening social hour with burgers on Tuesday.
The rooms are spacious and clean and they are always good if we need extra towels or supplies.
Love the refrigerator and microwave that us there because we could bring back leftovers and then use it as a snack between meals.
Love the refrigerator so we could keep our drinks cold and microwave the leftovers or popcorn that is left there to cook.
The parking is limited if you come back late and may have to park a ways from your room.
Even though you room has a refrigerator freezer it would be nice to have an ice machine in the hotel rather than use the ice machine in the freezer.
When they have the bbq night with burgers, the burgers are actually really good.
The staff is very accomodating and friendly and the hotel is located in hotel circle and very centralized to most places that we go to in San Diego.
Will be back again.

Hotel is fairly nice. Very clean. The regular sized rooms are very small. And they do not have a oven or much to cook with. Very poorly stocked kitchens. We were a little surprised to find no oven when we were told there was a full kitchen. Vanessa took care of us immediately and upgraded us to a suite. The suite was nice and big and it had an oven so I could cook. I am so grateful for Vanessa taking such good care of us. She sent my boys down to the marketplace for free snacks of their choice. Not much to cook with in the room but for one night it will work. Service is very slow. We had no dish detergent and waited 40 minutes. Our daughter has food allergies so everything needs to be washed first. After third phone call and 40 minutes later I asked if they could please bring it up so that I could make my daughters food. And it was up in 5 minutes. Service if u need anything is very slow. It’s faster to go downstairs for it.
Pool is outdoors and in a courtyard. There is also a hot tub. I wouldn’t vacation here but it’s nice for business.
Very family friendly. Movie night and dessert for the kids and beer and wine for the adults.
I came down to the front desk to ask them where I can go buy a case of water. I explained that we had forgotten to bring the water in when we were loading the stuff into our room and someone had stolen it from in front of our door. The gentleman behind the counter asked me if I would like another case of water? He told me he had one in the back. He even offered to bring it up to my room for me. I was so grateful for his kindness.
I would stay here again if we were in this area needed a hotel.

Very poor experience. The front desk supervisor Vanessa is very condescending. She talks to you like you are 4 years old. We wanted to come with a large group but we’re not welcomed here and they did not work with us. They are not a full fledged Marriott but ran by another company. That might be why we had these issues. They are not accommodating at all. We always stay at Marriotts and have come to expect the Marriott standard. This experience were not up to that standard. Not happy with the head of house keeping that came to our door at 12:01pm acting like a bouncer trying to intimidate us to leave (as we were already packed and grabbing the last bit of items from the room). Very rude.

I’ve stayed here a few times now over the years. This location is great because:
1) It’s somewhat close to downtown
2) It’s right by the Fashion Valley Mall
3) It’s one of the few Residence Inns I know that has 2 bedrooms
4) It’s the only Residence Inn I know that has craft beer for managers’s reception
5) It has a large BBQ area big enough to host 2 –3 families
I’ve done other things at this hotel including borrowing a basketball to shoot with friends and use the little office internet area by the check in. Note: There’s a bathroom near there in case you need to use it when you check in or when you’re having the free breakfast.
Oh, speaking of breakfast. This was like the only downfall because over the years, it has gotten a little worse. The yogurt is now in a lump pile. The fruit did not look fresh. Even the juice dispenser did not work correctly. The best thing there was the chilaquiles and the DIY blueberry waffles.
Also the parking is now $ 13. Although it’s still cheap compared to downtown standards, I really think they should either waive or have a reduce rate for Marriott members. When you are paying $ 300 a night already for Comic Con, I don’t think it’s necessary to add anymore to the hurt.
I like it here and most people that stays here are families. So make sure you’re prepared for that when you’re relaxing by the pool or having breakfast. I’m sure my kids would contribute to the noise as well.

I love staying at any Residence Inn. Definitely the suite life!
In fact, now that we make it a point to seek out these places when we travel, I recommend these havens of bliss to all.
The amenities are amazing! Free breakfast buffet every morning, and generally a dinner (also free) with a theme (e.g. tacos, pizza…) each evening, Monday through Wednesday, with free flowing beer and wine too!
The spacious suites are stocked with all that you would need to accommodate preparing meals in room. It is definitely a home away from home place!

I stayed in this hotel for a conference in San Diego Convention Center. The time we checked in, the front desk greeted me and my family politely. I brought my parents and my 3 year old with me to tag along SD while I’m in a conference.
As soon as we came in our room, I was pleasantly surprise that it was ready. We came earlier than the check in time. We were located in 3^rd floor. The room is large and gives plenty of natural light. The bed was very comfortable so are the pillows! It was so soft my son loved them! I’m not a pillow person, but ended up using them too!
I like the fact that you can control your AC and not like other hotels I’ve been to that its broken or too cold.
The phone in our room didn’t work, but we didn’t need them nor use them so it didn’t bother us.
The bathroom was big enough and it has bath tub. It was perfect bec my son was able to take baths like he does at home. I like how the sink is separate from the bathroom.
The iron has the cord that you can hide. I know it’s the little things, but it makes a difference! I loved it!
The living is comfortable that when my son got tired in the bedroom, he would run to the living room and play his toys. We were also able to use the kitchen and all the gadgets you need is provided!
What I love about this place is so central to everything! It’s less than 10 mins to gaslamp, with the traffic! Minutes to Seaworld and la jolla. It’s so central, I can’t complain of the location! It’s perfect location. Right around the corner from historic SD old town and hill crest.
This place is perfect for family hotel. They provide entertainer for kids from fri-​sun. They also provide continental breakfast. They shouldn’t call it continental bec it’s not… it’s more than that. it’s full breakfast bar! Fr eggs to sausage to cereal to oatmeal and fruits and even turkey bacon and eggbeaters for people that’s watching their diet! They also provide free light dinner from mon-​thur. We didn’t have to worry about our food but just lunch! It definitely saves you so much money from food alone.
They have a nice pool for kids and adults. The adult pool is only 4ft deep and water was warm enough and this was mid September! They also have a jacuzzi that we enjoyed almost very night to relax before bed.
I can go on and on about this hotel. It was more than I expected! Oh… beer and wine from mon-​thur for free!!! Are you kidding me? That was a treat and super bonus!
I love this hotel that ill go back again when I go to SD. For the price we paid, totally worth it. For people that doesn’t drive or rent cars, public transportation is easy to figure out :)

Let me start by saying I not only a big fan of Residence Inn by Marriott but also most all Marriott brands. Each brand provides great consistency from one location to another. I have stayed in at least 15 Residence Inns around the country. My experience at this particular Residence Inn was the most disappointing.
First, some of the good, though. Like most Marriott hotels, the staff is friendly and professional. Ryan, on the front desk was friendly, professional, and helpful. Ryan went above and beyond the call of duty in arranging for us to check in a bit early.
The staff in the breakfast area as friendly and seemed to greet or know everyone. Always nice to see a friendly face in the morning. Well, *after* getting some coffee in me… :-) The pool/​spa area is nice and well maintained.
The location is convenient for work in the Mission Valley, but is also a very quick drive to downtown or the Hillcrest /​University area. (Bachman Drive, right down the street, is a quick, secret shortcut to Hillcrest.)
The parking is gated and is in the back of the building. One downside is that they charge $ 13 per night for parking. I would not have imagined that they would have charged for parking in Mission Valley, but that seems to be par for the course in this area.
Now, the «bad»… though my room was great, mostly the hotel is worn around the edges. Discolored paint, some tattered carpet, and small bits of disrepair.
The hotel WiFi is slow. I get it… all the guests using WiFi at once slows it down. But, they should build in capacity for that. Through out much of the afternoon and evening, it was intolerably slow.
My biggest beef was with house keeping. One morning we slept in, but the maid came in the room around 8:45. We put the sign out saying we would be leaving later. We left at 10am and took the sign down, but she never came back to make up the room. Not a problem. I can live without housekeeping for a day or two (even though the cost is rolled in to the nightly rate.). The next day, we left around 8:30 in the morning and did not return until 4:30. The room was not made up and the maid did not even come until a bit after that. We turned down the service that day. I realize that is a small thing, but housekeeping is included as part of the daily rate, so they should do a better job of keeping up.
I realize I’m being a bit hard on Marriott, my favorite hotel brand, but I also have high expectations that they almost always meet. This Residence Inn fell short.

This has become my regular hotel in the the San Diego area for a variety of reasons:
1. Located in Hotel Circle, it’s easy to get to and is centrally located. But… you’ll need a car to get anywhere. If you are looking to party in the Gaslamp or go to the zoo or Sea World or the beaches or ANY restaurant, you’ll have to drive because there is nothing but other hotels in close proximity. When you do drive, keep in mind that they charge for parking and the lot can fill up fast.
2. It’s kept relatively clean. Relatively.
3. It’s reasonably priced, compared to downtown hotels.
4. Free breakfast. Typical hotel buffet breakfast. I don’t eat eggs and try to avoid the carb/​sugar bombs (waffles, muffins, etc.) that they offer, but I am satisfied with fruit and oatmeal. And coffee.
Tip: I like fruit. So I usually grab a couple of bananas and apples on my way out. Peanut butter too. Makes for a great snack during the day.
5. Manager receptions. Monday — Thursday nights they offer a light dinner buffet. The schedule is posted on the fridge in your room. They actually offer a pretty impressive variety of foods — meats, pasta, Mexican food, etc. It’s not great. It’s actually only marginal. But it’s free. Oh, and there is free craft beer and wine.
Tip: The food and drinks are free, but make sure to bring some cash with you so that you can show the bartender some love. It’s the least you can do for all the free grub you’re scoring.
6. Big rooms — Standard Residence Inn suites with full kitchens. I rarely cook in the room, mainly because I don’t have any of the normal necessities that I have at home (ex. cooking oil, spices, etc.) but I sometimes boil water to cook up some late night ramen. Yes, the height of luxury…
7. Friendly staff — especially the breakfast staff.
8. Huge dining room and outdoor patio. They even have a BBQ that you can use.
Things to keep in mind:
1. More so than other Residence Inns that I go to, this one seems to attract a lot of families. It makes sense since it’s San Diego. They have a number of two bedroom suites, some with bunk beds. Because of this, the pool is usually full of kids. It can get pretty noisy. Oh, and the lines to all that free food at breakfast and dinner can get really long. Like «it’s not worth it» long.
Tip: Go to the dining room right at the beginning of meal times: 6am for breakfast /​6pm for dinner.
2. If you want to work out, you may be disappointed. The fitness center is abysmal.
In summary: A great hotel for a family vacation, as long as you understand that a bunch of other people are also having their family vacation there. Good value when you consider all the free food.

Overall is was A OK!
Arrival day went smoothly. Room was smaller than I expected. It was clean. The décor was very sad. The dishwasher did not work, but we did not find this out until the last day.
We were on the pool side, and in retrospect, I should have moved us. It closed at 10, but sometimes it was very loud.
The family was pleasantly surprised with the breakfast, and happy hour. Food and drink were good and plentiful.
I was not happy to pay for parking, but that seemed to be standard in this area. It was close to the Zoo and Sea World.
A fine place to park you stuff while you take in all the San Diego has to offer.

The Hotel: Very clean and well maintained. There are BBQ area right next to the pool. LOVE the free breakfast~ Not just continental breakfast (e.g. pastry & coffee), there are two different kind of scrambler eggs, sausage link, hash browns, biscuit with gravy, pancake, waffle, oatmeal, yogurt, fruits, all kind of bread, coffee, tea, juice, etc. Totally breakfast buffet!
The Service: The front desk staff was very sweet to upgrade our reservation when she found out we have 3 adults and 2 children. They gave us 2 bedrooms suite! One room with a king size bed, the other room with the bunk bed and sofa bed in the living room. Perfect arrangement!
The Parking: $ 13 per day
