Poor House Brewing Company

This place was sad to me and the beers I tried, lackluster. Are they brewing from a beer kit? Place was also dirty. Me no like.

Great place we stumbled upon, cold beer, cool local vibe, house golden retriever! We watched the Golden State game here and had a good time. Inexpensive beer, pool tables, and a food truck on a Saturday. Hole in the wall bar, free pizza on Thursdays at 5pm!

A little divey brewhouse in North Park. I live right around the corner, so I was glad when they opened up, and even more glad when they started brewing beer here. A pretty laid back vibe, a small neighborhood bar with regulars, dudes that hang out and quietly drink their beer. The flirty female bartender seems to give better service to men than women. That might explain all the guys that come alone to drink here. I like the big windows that open up to the street. Their beer is small batch home brew style; I love the one called «Clusterf*ck», but the price is too high for this type of beer. For two beers, it was $ 12 plus the tip. However, I like that this business is constantly trying to improve and make progress. They used to be cash only but now they take credit cards, and that is great.

Great spot in north park. I love the fact that we walked in in a Thursday because I guess there is free pizza. So that was awesome. Beers are on point of the 2 we tried. I had the little mosaic and my wife had an imperial stout with dark horse coffee. She liked them both as well. Only weird silly thing was the fact that they don’t fill blank growlers, so be prepared if your into that.

Sorry Poor House. The bartender was awesome, the dogs were friendly, the peanuts and pretzels were fresh and tasty… I just didn’t like the beer.

Such an awesome little brewery. Probably the best one in San Diego I’ve been to. The inside has a very «poor» look with the tap handles just pieces of wood. They have a golden retriever named Brody who greeted me upon entry and even came up to me five minutes later to see if I was enjoying my stay. The beer tender was very friendly and has a really cool demeanor. I’ll definitely be back.

I live a block away & was very excited to get acquainted with this place after moving to the area. I saw a pool table and was hoping it would become my new go-​to bar. I’ve been about 5 times since my first time ~ 2 years ago.
First lets start with cash only bar. Cash only bar… I’m not used to carrying that much cash. It is annoying, but the least of their troubles.
The staff is a mixed bag. I’ve had great friendly service, then been ignored other times. What strikes me is that they seem to have an arrogance about themselves like «we don’t need your money».
I gave it several chances. maybe more than I should have. When I would strike up a conversation with other people in there they were usually «new to the area» too. Like me, they would say they were excited to check out the place, but quickly let down.
The beer is ok. It’s not the worst I’ve had, far from the best. I mean, considering the neighbors on 30^th this is by FAR my least favorite place.

I’ve just recently became a regular here as it is just a few blocks down from me. I love the staff! They are friendly, sweet, and they all know what I like to drink… anything IPA! It’s a small bar but what I like about small bars is how close you are to others that it’s easy to make friends there… especially if you are one of the few that arrive during happy hour like me! The entire staff: Amanda & Brody, Michelle, Zack, and even the manager Alana (these are the ones I see most often working)…they are all pretty FAST with getting you drinks! Just don’t be hesitant to ask for a refill of whatever you’re drinking — the bar top is a small square so it’s not hard to flag them down — drink as much as you want — responsibly of course! ;) They have 3 TVs (from what I recall) playing a good variety of sports, Southpark, or some random movie so you are not stuck watching sports if it ain’t your cup of tea!
Let’s not forget *FREE* PEANUTS & PRETZELS upon request!
As far as Beer: I love the House IPA, 30 Hop IPA, Hop Farm (I think?).and some other IPA drinks I got to try (but forgot the name) .these guys know my taste so well when it comes to beer! And Yes, they brew their own beer!
And if you need something stronger… just ask for a shot of the PANTY DROPPER ALE! 3 shots and you will most likely feel like you’ve already drank 4 – 5 beers!
The fact I go here so often… I’ve also had the chance to get to know a bunch of other friendly regulars… when it comes to beer, this is my place! I love how I know most people here!
Oh, and bring your dog if you have one! ;) This place is dog friendly! I will most likely welcome your dog if I happen to be there! ;)
Ambience: More of a Dive Bar feel… Music varies day to day and also depending on who is working. Yes, there is a Pool Table… just one… so if you arrive during happy hour, you will most likely not need to fight for it. I believe they also have Beer Pong available if you request for it and some other game… don’t know what it is…(shrug)
Don’t forget they serve you *free pizza* Thursday evenings if you need that BEER N’ PIZZA FIX!

The bartender was really nice, but the five beers we tried were so gross. We couldn’t finish the tasters. Ugh.

Here’s my thing with this place.
I personally enjoy the beer. I like how it’s dog-​friendly, and I get a kick out of petting the dogs and seeing how friendly they are.
The bartenders… well…some are awesome, but not all of them.
So there have been times when I didn’t exactly feel welcome. Sure, they were willing to serve me and all. I just didn’t feel very accommodated. I know that the beers change all the time, but I can’t exactly visit this place so often to keep up with all those changes. I asked about this one beer the last time I was here, and she told me she had never heard of it before. Not even a «I might have something similar to it» or «I’ll check to see if we have some of that left» or anything along those lines just to show us that they’re giving some sort of damn.
I can’t really get a good idea of how much business they’re getting, but I only seem to get 2 different scenarios. Either it’s busy on a Saturday night, or there are only regulars and friends of the staff there at any other time.
I still feel like I have to be in the mood to come here. I have a friend who absolutely raves about this place nonstop. I can see why he enjoys coming here, but I can’t emulate the emotion as persistently as he does.
Regardless of how I feel personally about this place, here’s what to look forward to:
— Rapidly rotating/​cycling selections of beers. Just because you were able to order a beer at a given time doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be able to get the same thing the next time you come here. So, get it while it lasts.
— Fun dogs. You’ll always find very nice dogs here to pet.
— Open air space. On nice days, you’ll get fresh air to enjoy while you have a brew.
— Every once in a while, they’ll have free pizza.

The bartender (crap, I forgot her name) was the most down to earth person ever. We had a splash of all the most popular beers on tap (the names are all so unique but I forgot to write them down/​too tipsy to remember haha) but my favorite HANDS DOWN was «know happiness» — tasted similar to a very tame IPA, citrusy, but not too bitter. Yuuuum! She said they have seasonal beers too, mentioning they might have a peppermint flavored one coming out (must try) so I’ll definitely be back for more! :)

Dig the vibe. Dig the music. Wish they had darker beers, but they were out of a lot of the good stuff.

The Poor House Brewing Company has an amazing setup in San Diego. It is a very small bar that is tucked away in bar row of the downtown San Diego area. The venue had affordable prices and great service and I would go back again. The overall quality was very clean and the nooks and cranny’s of where you could hang out was very interesting and unlike any normal bar or restaurant. I would recommend adding more parking to the surrounding area since it was about a half mile walk to get to this venue. The surrounding area is quiet housing which means safe parking. This area is about 15 minutes from the coast, so you still get the fresh air feeling down here. I would recommend heading out with your significant other or a large group of friends to this area and have some fun!

Nice, low-​key, small place to try out some local beers. I tried a few tasters — mostly dark and non-​hoppy beers. My favorites were the grapefruit ale (forgot the name) and the Chocolate Wasted, which were both great. The staff is super nice and attentive, which is not always a given at local breweries. They are dog friendly, but be forewarned — CASH ONLY.

Poor House is a hidden gem on 30^th. Besides indulging in craft beer there is a pool table and shuffleboard. The standard flight is mostly light beers (Working Man’s Blonde, Shan Diego, Sterling, Whitney, & Driving Ms. Simon) is $ 8. If you want to pick your own flight of 5 beers it will cost you $ 10. My favorite was the Sterling, but Working Man’s Blonde and Shan Diego were also really good. A bunch of my friends got Chocolate Wasted and were kind enough to offer me a sip. If you like stouts, especially chocolate stouts, this your go-​to beer at Poor House. One important thing to note is Poor House is cash only. There is an ATM available, but get some cash prior and you won’t have to worry about transaction fees. Added bonus — Poor House is dog friendly. One of the employees brought her golden retriever who wondered around greeting patrons. All other dogs were leashed and welcomed inside.

Wow! Amazing beers… Great service and cool atmosphere! Try their seasonal ales and hang out with friends.

Cool-​chill brewpub but yikes… The bartenders Kelsie and Amanda hate life apparently. Sorry thier are 30 people in your bar wanting to tip you well and have a good time! One hasn’t cracked a smile the other says hey to her friends and feels the burden of everyone else :)

Great vibe with a laid back atmosphere. This was my second time at Poor House and I enjoyed it even more than I did the first time (I really enjoyed it the first time)!
Last time, I had tasters and tried a good number of their beers. This time, I focused on full pours. It was a hot day, so I had a Working Man’s Blonde and a Dark & Damp. The blonde was an easy drink — crisp & refreshing. The Dark & Damp had some complexity. It had a roasted flavor and was a smooth, brown pour.
In addition to the beer itself, the service was quick and friendly and the owner was great. I spent a while talking with him and he was incredibly down to earth.
I’ll be going back very soon!

Small, Super chill, cash only beer spot in NP. They serve their beers in mason jars! I think they also give you peanuts/​pretzels to go with your drink of choice. They allow dogs here and they also allow outside food.

1^st timer yesterday. It’s super chill and the woman bartender helped both a friend and I pick out beers by our likings. I like how the beer comes in a jar, that’s pretty sick. Free pizza after 5. Definitely coming back.
Take note, when brewing beer it can get pretty hot in there. I recommend sit by the open windows.

Working Man’s Blonde Ale — Light & refreshing

LOTS of beers on tap, which means plenty of tasters to be had!
There’s a huge bar with wrap-​around seating, and a pool table as well. We spotted a long beer pong table propped against the wall, so I’m sure they put that to good use at times also.
Beers were alright and ambience was okay. Bartender poured us some of the wrong tasters and forgot to ring us up for our drinks, so we had to remind her about that but otherwise, it’s a good place to stop by just for the experience.

Cool cool spot. I was unfortunately Designated driver this night and wasn’t able to try as many items as I could. The most interesting thing I found about this brewery/​tasting room is that fact that it is run solely by women. Women brew the beer as well as pour the beer. I’m not sure if this is totally true but I found it very interesting. The atmosphere is very local feeling. They aren’t trying to impress a huge crowd, they are just doing them.
I tried a saison I believe and it was good but what was really good was the shot beer that is brewed with fireball. Me and my buddies are fireball lovers so we got a good kick out of that one. There is also shuffle board and a pool table if you wanna hang here for a bit.

Poor House Brewing sure doesn’t make a poor attempt at being a great brewery to spend some time at. It’s pretty unassuming if you’re walking down the street but once you step inside, that comfy, friendly pub feeling engrosses you immediately.
That comfortable vibe doesn’t stop after you walk in. The bartenders are friendly and they offer complimentary pretzels and peanuts to accompany your beer.
Speaking of beer, they have plenty to choose from. You can get yourself started with a $ 11 flight of 7 tasters which gives you 6, 3 ounce tasters of some of their main offerings as well as one 2 ounce taster of their «Panty Dropper» 18% specialty ale. IIRC my flight consisted of the «Shan-Diego”(Shandy), «Bat Out of Hell» (Red), «Witney» (Witbier), Belgian Ale, IPA (forget which one), Gingerbread Stout and of course, the «Panty Dropper». All of which were good with my favorites being the Belgian, The Gingerbread Stout and the Panty Dropper. The Panty Dropper had a familiar taste that I couldn’t quite pinpoint until I read the description which stated that they brewed it with Atomic Fireball candies. Then it all made sense. Overall, I really liked it.
They also have some really cool happenings and events there. They had a Holiday party the night that I was there which included tons of food, gift exchanges and some other stuff. They also have complimentary pizza on Thursdays after 5:00PM for the NFL games. So no matter when it is, it seems like it’s always a good time to be there.
I can easily dig this place. Like I’ve said in my other reviews, this part of town is starting to have a lot of things to be jealous of. and now you can add this one to the list.

Casual and dog friendly. Poor house brewing company is small and a hole in the wall type brewery/​dive bar-​ish. They serve their beer in mason jars (even their tasters) so they are hip as well. They have specials of beer mixed/​infused/​hybrid with hard liquor (e.g., the panty dropper 18% alcohol content and served in a 2 ounce mason shot glass). Interesting concept but in my opinion a little too wild and crazy strong. But a good taster if you’ve never had any. They keep to the IPA theme as do many San Diego breweries and they do well. Not an IPA type person but here i was. Their american strong ale and blonde were so-​so.
Star for having a pool table ($ 1 per game), shuffle board, and darts.
Tip: Bring cash. They’ll start a tab for you on your card, but you can’t get it back until you pay full in cash. Odd.
