I have to write a review of this great group. First I have Kaiser which at least for now contracts with this group. Second pre kids (I am an old mom) I was a hospital CFO and then corporate CFO for healthcare chains.
I am surprised at the reviews of the staff. To me they have been super nice. These days being office staff in any healthcare setting is hard. The rules change by the minute.
I had surgery at Scripps Mercy across the street. I feel so lucky that Kaiser in San Diego County contracts with this group. Dr Rumsey was my surgeon and I tell people he is like the «old time country doc» you think about. So nice, so NOT ego driven, very caring. The students in medical school should get lessons from him on how to be good with patients.
I had the gastric sleeve again via the Kaiser Contract. For me has been truly a life changer and saver. Physically and emotionally it has changed my life 100%.
Interestingly enough the friend of a friend used this group with private insurance. They are very well regarded and I would recommend if you are cash pay to private insurance to Kaiser. I know folks who are changing to Kaiser JUST to get the surgery.

While attending school in San Diego I needed to see a Dr. I came across Pacific Bariatrics and thought the location was ideal. I called they seemed nice over the phone and fit me right in. My initial meeting with Dr. Tenaka went well. I was comfortable with him and felt I could trust him. I had reflux so he told me I should drain my band. I went from a 7 to zero… probably not good for me since I had such a struggle getting to my goal. He sent me for an xray. Imaging center said my xray would be sent b over within 2 days… When the office received it I was never contacted or given any result. When I called to ask about my xray weeks later I was given an appt. When I got there they were very confused as to why I was there. My chart was incomplete. I was told I needed a surgery to correct my port and that they would contact my insurance for an auth. ITS BEEN 4 WEEKS AND AGAIN I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THEM. While the Dr. Seems nice his staff at this group is horrible!!! His office visits are far higher priced than other bariatric offices. Bewarned. If your serious about your goals this practice will only frustrate you. Ive been drained for several months now so you can imagine whats happening. Im seeing my Dr. In Vegas soon… I do not recommend Pacific Bariatrics and have wondered if this group of Dr. s cares. Why havent they noticed the client retention issue??? Staff issues here need some fixing for sure… PASS

I am writing this as a parent who has watched her son transform for the better. It’s been one year last month since «The Sleeve «…No issues to date.
Dr Zorn from the first appointment to present has addressed each question an concern with total honesty, knowledge and patience.
Scripps-​Mercy Hospital staff was awesome from the check in staff, nurses, floor staff, security, parking staff, housekeeping… everyone that we came in contact with was friendly, helpful and more than willing to help.
I have to say there’s no complaints on
Dr Zorn or the hospital. They did in my opinion a perfect job to date. We have referred Dr Zorn to many people.
Note:
I did leave staff last on the review. A year ago, they were rude, short, an didn’t have a clue what customer service was and why their job was there.
Currently, staff has changed and seem more friendly, helpful.
Staff at the desk is the first contact an last for each call or walk in.
Impressions is everything… word of mouth goes far.

I am more than happy to give Dr Rumsey at Pacific Bariatric FIVE BIG STARS! I had the Roux En Y gastric bypass surgery on June 13^th, 2013. I had a previous surgery when I was 13 years old from a bicycle accident. Because of that surgery, Dr Rumsey had to spend over three hours carefully digging through the scar tissue so that he could safely complete my surgery laparoscopically. I assume that could have just opened me the old way, and been able to finish this surgery in half the time. Because of his eye for perfection, and wanting the best results for his patient, he spent over 4.5 hours total doing my surgery. He did an excellent job, because I felt great right out of recovery, and was off pain meds the next morning. I had zero complications, and my recovery has been smooth sailing! It’s been 7 weeks since my surgery, and I am already down 60lbs. I feel great, and this has been the best decision I have ever made. I am looking forward to a healthier future. Thank you Dr Rumsey!

I had my surgery in April 2012 with Dr. Zorn. I have zero complaints about my experience with him and his staff. They were all very courteous and prompt when I needed messages returned. I have Kaiser and know several other people who have recently had surgery with Dr. Zorn and Dr. Tanaka and there haven’t been any negative comments from anyone. It seems they must have had a change in office staff.

I had my surgery 3÷1÷05. I specifically switched to Kaiser Permanente when I learned that PBSMG was performing their surgeries. In earlier research on WLS I concluded that they were the best on the West Coast. I have never regretted my decision to have the surgery or in choosing PBSMG. I had Dr. Murphy (no retired) and his attention to my pre-​surgical preparation was critical to my sucess with the surgery and my post-​surgical results.
I’ve had a chance to observe current Kaiser bariatric patients and see all of the shortcuts that seem to exist in the current protocol. Perhaps things have evolved in the past six years but I doubt that PBSMG would compromise.
There is a reason that the doctors of this group partially host an annual reunion of their patients. They are committed to each person who comes through their office doors. I remember the other staff members to be equally attentive and considerate.
I would be hard pressed to think of another medical group that I would more highly recommend for bariatric surgery then PBSMG

I have Kaiser so this group is the go to place. I think the surgeons are very capable and had a great in-​hospital stay at Scripps Mercy.
I have gone back and forth whether to review PBSMG honestly or not since I am so thankful for surgery. When it comes down to it do I appreciate what they have done for me? You bet. Am I appreciative of surgery? You bet. Would I recommend them to someone who can choose which group to go to? I wouldn’t deter them. Would they have been my first choice? Definitely not.
I just set up my 6 month follow-​up appointment and cannot hold my tongue any longer. At times I just can’t get how rude the staff is. I realize they are very busy, I talk to doctors’ offices a lot for my job. I also realize there are aspects of surgery that most patients probably call in and ask. Guess what? It’s still your job to reassure them and answer their questions. Every employee at every organization has these questions they are asked over and over.
From intonation to words chosen I am not impressed with the over the phone care which is a large part of overall patient experience. Whether I’m scheduling a follow-​appointment or I have a question (we’re talking fresh out of the hospital bruising and possible infection), I have always seemed like an afterthought and a nuisance.
(As a side note, I have done a huge amount of research surrounding surgeons and the procedures so I am in no way asking things that were covered in literature or in classes)

Although the surgeons seem GREAT, the phone staff /​office staff are HORRIBLE.
They act as though you are incoveniencing them every time you call. One of them (Lorane) doesn’t even state her name when she answers the phone. Can’t help but feel like they are doing the bare minimum to get me scheduled in a timely manner. They also don’t explain the process or have any type of decent follow up. So annoying and such bad service for a place that is in charge of major surgery.
In addition, the actual office building looks like something out of TJ mexico. Totally old and not what I expected at ALL. Thankfully they perform actual surgeries at Scripps, which is a great hospital.
