Learn To Sail San Diego ®

Lee is absolutely an amazing person. His kind and caring personality truly makes for a fun learning experience. He really understands how to impart his vast sailing knowledge in a way you can understand and quickly apply. I would highly recommend anyone wanting to learn to sail that you reach out to Lee and set up a time.

This could be not only one of the most intelligent teachers in the world but one of the kindest and most patient!

My wife and I enrolled in a 3 day course with Learn To Sail San Diego in August 2015. Lee Pearce was our instructor for the ASA 101 & 103 sailing courses. All of the reading material arrived in time for us to study before we arrived at our course. Lee spent a lot of time working with each of us individually to make certain of our understanding and ability to handle the practical as well as written test standards.
His boat, SV Tenacious, is a really nice handling boat to learn on. All of the vessel’s equipment and accommodations were clean, in good working order and perfect for the course objectives.
We were worried about learning on a 36′ sailboat, but it was a piece of cake to handle. Learning in San Diego made the whole experience even better. The weather, water and local conditions allowed a lot of experiential learning, as well as nice vacation on the water.
We plan on using Learn to Sail San Diego again to complete ASA 104 & 105. ‘Highly recommended.

There are teachers and there are instructors. Instructors have a tendency to be arrogant and to show you how much they know about a product or service, leaving you to figure out the answers yourself. On the other hand, most teachers are not so arrogant, but rather have a tendency to inspire. Captain Lee Pearce was definitely an inspiration. I already had an ASA 105 certification and wanted to acquire my 106. Juanita wanted to acquire her 104 and Capt. Lee was able to accommodate our individual needs as other schools were not. His method of teaching was led by his ability to explain why you should sail certain way instead of another, so that it made sense. This is not always an easy task for a teacher, but Capt. Lee nailed it. Actually it was a joy sailing with him, as he seemed more like a fellow crewmember and friend, rather than an «INSTRUCTOR» The next trip to San Diego from Fort Lauderdale will be for Juanita’s 106 cert and my celestial navigation from SD to Catalina and back. Can’t wait!

Lea is an excellent instructor and mentor when it comes to anything sailing. I took several ASA classes through him (101 – 106). I even consulted him before purchasing my first sailboat. Lea’s calm and confident demeanor is perfect for building anyone’s confidence on the water, and keeps everyone calm in stressful situations.
The group I took lessons with was a group of friends from work and we all had different experience levels with sailing from none to several years of lake sailing, but Lea was able to challenge us all without leaving anyone behind. He can teach to your ability level even in a group that may have less or more experience.

My 3 sons and I had taken ASA 101 at different times from 3 different instructors in a nearby ASA Instruction facility, and later one of my sons and I also took 103 and 104 from another instructor at a facility in tropical waters.
A few months ago, when contemplating a charter vacation, I contacted numerous ASA (and other) facilities to arrange for some refresher training. I checked out numerous schools on the west coast and in Florida, but most just didn’t offer, or seem interested in offering refresher training.
Then I called Learn To Sail San Diego, and Lee Pierce answered the phone himself. He happily and quickly arranged a 3 day live-​aboard course of instruction to refresh our skills. Having sailed for decades and chartered in tropical waters many times himself, he knew just exactly what to emphasize and which sailing skills and knowledge we needed to practice.
More than that though, he was hands down and far away the best sailing instructor we’d ever encountered. Lee instructs in a cheerful and low key manner, while patiently explaining the whys and hows. At every opportunity he encourages and guides the student to reason through each situation, arrive at the proper conclusions, and initiate the proper course of action, which really helps it stay with you. He clearly loves the sport and is enthusiastic about helping others to learn and love it also.
My other sons plan to take 103 and 104 with Lee, and I plan to take 105 and 106 with him. I highly recommend him to anyone wanting any level of sail training. You really will be glad you did !
