History

Established in 1851.

James & Joseph Ships Chandlery started as Johnson & Joseph in San Fransisco back in 1851. Johnson & Joseph San Diego opened its doors in San Diego, Ca. back in 1973. Soon after the location was sold to the previous owner James Morgan. Mr. Morgan Changed the name of the store to James & Joseph in the early 90’s.

James & Joseph became San Diego’s Premier Spearfishing Supply store about fifteen years ago when Mark Morgan brought his love of the sport and knowledge to the public.

In 2007, James & Joseph started a new chapter when it sold to Damien Salerno. Damien has remodeled the store and expanded the Spearfishing section two fold. He and the J&J crew are more than happy to help with any questions concerning Spearfishing; so stop by and say hi sometime.

I have been a patron of this shop since 1989 and have found their products and services to be top of the line. I have worked with many of the staff to discuss products and repairs. Each individual takes as much time as is needed to accommodate my questions and interests. Their prices are published on the website and make comparison shopping an easy task. Great selection, friendly to amateurs. I went in to get some entry level fins and the fellow behind the counter treated me just as well as if I’d come in to buy $ 3k worth of gear. There’s a lot to be said for folks who are just plain friendly & helpful.

There is so much to love about J&J. They have just about everything you could ever need. Their prices are reasonable. They have great customer service (They close at 7pm and I showed up at 6:45 and Nick helped me out until almost 8pm, and he was happy to do so!!!) This is the ONLY true Spearfishing store in SD! It also doubles as a small museum for the old locals called The Bottom Scratchers which is awesome! The service and selection cannot be beat! Damian (the owner), Robert, Allen, and Nick are very knowledgable and give outstanding service! I’ve been going here for years since my son was born 3 yrs ago and one day he’ll buy his gear there too lol. They give the best recommendations based upon YOUR skill level and WILL NOT try to up sell u to something u can’t even handle! I’ve recommended anyone and everyone I know to this shop and they all agree with the service and selection. I’d give this place more stars if I could! The selection, the price and the service is why I recommend and will ALWAYS come back! Thx guys and see y’all soon!

So truth be told I have Never placed a review on any establishment before. If I didn’t like a place I would simply just not go back and just share the Info with my close friends. I decided to do this review because for the most part we are quick to critique but seldom give praise when praise is do. With that said James and Joseph BOMB customer service and trust me I’m all about Customer Service. Alan Santos who I met for the first time provided me with un rushed customer service and took the time to educate me on the vast selection of gear and let me tell you their selection is second to none. I took a gun in that I picked up else where and honestly I was hesitating felt a bit awkward about taking something that I felt was of sub standard maybe not even worth fixing. At no point in time did their staff make me feel awkward they fixed my gun and explained to me what they where doing step by step. Delivery of such service gave me the confidence to purchase new gear from them knowing they will take care of me in the future. A place like this is worth investing in. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it !!!

I had bought a gun online but was having trouble setting it up. I went in to James & Joseph and got some excellent service. The employee set up my gun so it was ready to go and explained everything about it (I’ve used a pole spear for a little over a year now but this was my first gun).
I went back a few weeks later to look into getting a new tip. The store didn’t carry any but was able to find a catalog with the tip and offered to special order it. These guys are more than helpful and will answer any questions you have.

Huge selection of gear! I was recommended this place by two freediving professionals and glad I listened. Damien helped me find a pair of long blade fins for my small feet. They fit just right! Great customer service. I’m coming back to get the rest of my gear.

I would recommend this place!!! I was just given the best service I have had in a long time. The clerk was super helpful and most of all very patient. I tried on a number of wetsuits and was completely indecisive but the clerk was more then willing to continue to offer his help and advice. Wow. J&J is in fact a spear fishing haven. Great customer service, fabulous selection of gear and a truly remarkable experience. The owner, Damien, took the time to make sure I was welcomed and spent an hour going over new equipment and what equipment would best suit me. He didn’t try to up sell me on any unnecessary garbage and didn’t try to convince me to buy the most expensive gear. He merely recommended what I needed and this made for a truly excellent experience. Damien even threw in a free J&J t-​shirt which I’ve worn plenty already and offered to take me and a friend out on the water! What a guy! I actually referred a couple of co-​workers this week and am headed down with them this weekend. I further researched prices after the sell, not that I didn’t trust him, only to find out that their prices were not only competitive to any online site, but in some cases, they were actually cheaper. Congratulations on the great location and the great atmosphere. Continued success…

First and foremost, their customer service is awesome! This was my second time going in and both times I have felt like I actually mattered, wasn’t pressured to buy the most expensive equipment and every question I had was answered quickly and explained.
Also I drive here from north Orange County not only because the customer service, but their prices are great.
If you are in the market for anything spearfishing related, this is the place to go!!!

J&J is the best!
For anything and everything spearfishing I am happy this place is here in town. They carry from spearfishing magazines and books to wetsuits, spearguns, and freediving fins.
The staff is great, pleasant, and well versed in spearfishing equipment and technique.
If you are new to spearfishing, they carry everything you need to get started. You can even rent a whole spearfishing package to see if you like spearfishing before you invest in your own gear.
If you are a seasoned spearo, they carry everything you need to maintain or replace your equipment.

This may be one of the first spearfishing supply shops in San Diego, but it is definitely the best.
I don’t like to write reviews after just one visit, so this comes after several visits… most without purchase. I like to get to know the staff and their products before I drop cash. You see, I’m kind of new to spearfishing and love to pick brains before I dive into something (pun intended). The guys at J&J were happy to oblige.
From questions about equipment to breath holding techniques to where to find… oh, I can’t talk about that here ;)
