Gladys Design

I contracted with Gladys Design to remodel my main bathroom in my home. I wanted the old cast-​iron tub taken out and a modern shower put in its place. I wanted all of the cabinets replaced along with the fixtures and windows. The bathroom hadn’t been updated since the 1950s.
During the demolition phase, we discovered that the tub had been leaking into the sublfoor (probably for years). The entire subfloor of the bathroom had to be removed and replaced. Mike had to replace many of the structural floor beams under the bathroom. He explained the entire process to me, and he did what he said he was going to do. During the rebuild before he covered up the subflooring, he showed me the work he had to do to integrate the new flooring with the existing structure. There was a lot of additional work required to fix the unexpected subfloor leak damage. The price Mike charged for the additional and unexpected work was very fair.
The finish work in the bathroom was done exceptionally well. Mike has great attention to detail. He went out of his way to make sure I was happy with the work that he was doing. Mike was able to do the carpentry, the electrical, the plumbing, and the finish work. He is a true general contractor.
Several weeks after the work was completed (when the first rain came to San Diego), I discovered a small leak in the new skylight that had been installed in the bathroom remodel. I called Mike and explained to him the problem. He came back to the house that same day and discovered that the roofer who had installed the skylight had installed the skylight improperly. Even though Mike was not the one who made the mistake, Mike fixed the error very quickly and charged me nothing for the work. I was totally expecting to get dinged for the repair cost, but Mike repaired the leak at no cost to me.
Mike shows up on time, when he says he will show up. He is a very professional worker and is very trustworthy. Mike is usually the last worker to leave the job site at the end of the day, and he makes sure the trash and subcontractor garbage is removed every day. On several occassions, I saw him sweeping and mopping the area outside the construction sight to remove the dust and garbage that the subcontractors had left at the sight when the subs left at the end of the day. I am pretty sure the subs were supposed to clean up after themselves, but it is nice to know if they don’t do it, Mike will.

I purchased a 1932 Spanish home with a kitchen and bathroom remodeled in the early 90’s. Mike at Gladys Design remodeled both for me. It included moving walls, reframing, plaster work, wood floor work, painting, tile floors, electrical, plumbing, window installation, etc. Aside from the kitchen and the bath, I removed an unsightly plexiglass skylight over the dining room and Mike turned the opening in a very special ceiling.
Mike brought in very experienced subs, and I was pleased with all of their work. Mike himself did much of the framing, plumbing and other finish work. Mike has a great eye for design, especially lighting and was amazingly helpful with suggestions about placement of lighting and other design features. I had granite back splashes installed and didn’t want to make holes for electrical outlets. Mike suggested plug strips just under the cabinets which turned out perfectly! Mike takes the time to get things exactly the way you want them. He says he treats each project as if he were working on his own house and you hear this often as he encountered issues on the project…“Well, if this were my house, here’s what I would do…” Usually it’s the right answer to the problem.
I would not hesitate to recommend Mike to anyone. I have one more bathroom that needs to be redone and am waiting for Mike to become available rather that start with an unknown.
