History

Established in 2001.

El Comal Mexican Restaurant was founded by a married couple with big dreams. Noël Herrera was a chef in the hotel industry in Acapulco and his wife Luz was a chemistry teacher at the time. With the help of their four children, they opened El Comal in 2001. Their first restaurant was located along the barrio, just east of downtown San Diego.

Now in North Park, they have found a loyal following of people looking for the alternative to the more common taco shop eateries in town. Noël and Luz’s loyal customers come back time and time again for the authentic Mexican food that they serve. There’s no border compromises here, just great home cooking from the mainland. Over ten years later, we are still owned and operated by the Herrera family. What began as a family project has continued to grow into one of San Diego’s most loved Mexican Restaurants.

Meet the Business Owner

Luz Herrera I.

Business Owner

Cris Herrera is following in his families footsteps as the current manager of El Comal Mexican Restaurant. His mother wanted to create a place where people would feel like they were eating a home cooked meal. Today, Cris and the entire staff strive to fulfill this mission on a daily basis. According to one loyal customer, they are doing an outstanding job. «I’ve lived in San Diego for five years and have searched and searched for my go-to Mexican restaurant, and I have finally found it. It is El Comal. Their food is simply real. It’s the type of food I grew up eating –with real Mexican cheese and crema fresca– none of these yellow cheese and sour cream stuff. It makes me feel like I’m eating at the table with my mom, dad, and sisters.»
