CrossFit East Village

I dropped in to Crossfit East Village tonight for a workout (WOD) and I was very impressed with the staff, the facility and the programming. I travel a lot, every other week actually, and I work out on the road. I visit several different boxes on the weeks that I travel and Crossfit East Village will be my box when I am here in the Gas Lamp district for sure. There are many, many boxes in this area, some are extremely well known. Crossfit East Village has the best mix of, great programming, a large facility, good equipment, and excellent staff and clients. It’s a great community. This combination makes it my go to box in San Diego. :-)

I wish I could comment on the classes here, but I just stopped by for open gym since I was in the area. (It’s $ 15 for drop-​in.)
After making a few calls, CrossFit East Village was the only CF box that was not only open all day until 5pm, they had regular classes starting in the AM until noon, with open gym afterwards. If you CF, you know those are pretty epic hours (and options!) for a Saturday!
Once I arrived, I signed in via an iPad, paid my money, and was ready to go. The staff here are very friendly and accommodating; the space is large (2-​levels) and there were bathrooms on both floors. There were gym wipes to clean your equipment after you were done, but were lacking in the toilet paper and towel paper that day, but not a big deal.
They do have showers, another plus to any CF box.
I’ll come back when traveling in the area and will do a class here; the set-​up is great and with all the open space, I bet they make the most of it.

I’ve gone here for a long time. The gym has seen some amazing changes and I love it more now than ever. The programming for the whole week is posted first thing Monday morning. I love being able to plan which wod to miss. The trainers now really know their stuff, they’re not just random level 1’s.

Its a short walk from anywhere in the Gaslamp and marina area. Great people, excellent coaches and super programming. If you are looking for a place to embrace fitness and call home, this box should be at the top of your list. CFEV was very welcoming to me as a drop-​in and I felt right at home for my week in SD. Trainer Dani, Geez girl I thought you were going to kill me. I probably should have told you that I was out of the gym for six weeks. Overall great workout! Really nice and encouraging. Helpful. Sweet. Had a great time! Cannot wait for more classes by her!
Trainer Dave (I think), Friday morning. Great workout. He was encouraging and helpful. He entertained my dumb questions. He also helped me understand what I was doing wrong. I was also coming from La Jolla that morning and was 8 minutes late but he let me run quickly and join the class anyway. Super fun! I liked that we stretched a lot!
I will be here for a full month and hopefully longer! Ill Keep posting!

I’ve been going to CFEV for over a year now, starting as a total beginner, and it has been the best fitness experience of my life.
Membership here is a great value. CFEV has better hours, more classes, and lower rates than any other crossfit box I’ve ever heard of.
The facilities are huge. Plenty of room to have a class, open gym, and yoga session going on at the same time in separate areas.
The coaches are all phenomenal. Attentive, instructive, motivating, and positive. They make the experience very personal, always willing to provide tips or instruction even when off the clock and working out on their own time. Aside from keeping you fit, they are also just very solid people that you’d want to hang out and socialize with anyway.
Likewise, the members form a cool community with CFEV-​organized events like potlucks and bar crawls. Also, for someone like me who is not a fitness nut or diehard crossfit fanatic, CFEV has never felt cultish or pretentious (a common complaint about crossfit in general).
I can’t imagine a better place for a crossfitter of any level.

CrossFit East Village has a great location, lots of space, and an amazing community. The coaches are awesome, too! They’re knowledgeable and always ready to help with whatever skills you are working on. It’s my favorite place to be :)

My friend did some research and convinced me to try it a free Saturday workout. This workout kicked my butt! All the staff at this gym are very friendly and this trickles down into all of the members as well. This gym just has a great vibe and energy to it, it is also a GREAT value compared to other gyms in this category
The workouts on Saturday are tough but they use basic movements because if you are new you may not be able to do all of the cross-​fit exercises yet. If you get a membership, all the instructors will train you for the first month. All the instructors are VERY patient and supportive, David definitely went above and beyond to help me. They want to challenge you to work out harder and get better with every workout.
I also started doing Yoga here, the Yoga studio is a perfect size and has a beautiful hardwood floor. The Yoga teacher (Vivian) is also very friendly and supportive to those that are eager to learn. They provide mat’s and blocks if you’re just trying it.
The only potential drawback is parking, they don’t have a lot or anything but there is rarely a problem finding street parking. Just bring quarters if you go on Saturday or before 6 on a week-​day.

Well, if you are looking for your ass to be kicked with a good workout, this is a great place to go! I went to their free Saturday morning class to try CFEV and I am definitely feeling it today… ouch! But, I will thank them later when I am on the beach.
So, I was a little nervous to try out the class because I am definitely a novice CrossFitter but the staff made it a great experience and made me much more at ease. OJ was our trainer yesterday and he was great. He did a good job explaining the workout, providing modifications (for people like me who have no upper body strength… thank you, OJ!) and just being pleasant to be around. We were doing one of the Hero workouts — Jason… which is a beast. It involves a lot of air squats and muscle ups but I opted for the modified version that substituted pushups and pull-​ups for muscle ups. I was still frightened because my upper body strength is pitiful but OJ and my WOD partner showed me a way to modify the pull ups using the rings and it was great! I actually enjoyed them which I never thought I would say! My legs and butt are so sore today from the squats and laps we did along the block before the workout and each set of air squats — I have never done so many squats in such a short amount of time before! The WOD allowed for partners which was awesome because it provided a way to get to know other members. I definitely noticed how a lot of the members seemed to know each other and be friends with another which was great for facilitating a sense of camaraderie among the place. OJ did a good job of keeping me in check and pushing me when I was naughty and put my feet on the ground when they were supposed to be 6″ off of the ground!
This is the nicest box I have seen. The location is great because it is central to everything in downtown but more importantly, it is really big w/​lots of equipment and there is an upstairs with a yoga room, locker rooms w/​showers and they just got new spinning bikes! As someone who also loves yoga, I was really surprised by how big the yoga room is and I could definitely see myself doing yoga classes here too. It is nice to be able to get a good workout in and then stretch out and relax with some yoga. They have plenty of cubbies downstairs to put your stuff in during your workout too.
I am definitely pretty novice when it comes to CrossFit but I have been to other boxes and I definitely had a better experience here than I have at other places. Adam, the guy at the front desk, was really friendly and made a great first impression of the place. Several of the people were chatting w/​the trainer after the class too which was nice because it showed that people find a sense of community here. Overall, I was really impressed with all of the staff and the facility. Also, they had good music playing which always helps keep me motivated when I am getting my ass kicked!!!
If you’re looking for a CrossFit gym to join, I highly recommend CFEV! I am confident that they will whip you into shape in no time while having fun doing it. And you get the additional bonus of being able to take yoga classes which isn’t offered at a lot of places. Even if you aren’t a huge yoga fan, learning some of the poses will definitely help you stretch out before and after your workouts so that you don’t get injured. I was impressed w/​OJs incorporation of some yoga poses/​stretches before class. Finally, CFEV is reasonably priced too! 5 stars for sure.

If you’re looking for the best box in San Diego this is it! Have tried several CrossFit affiliates in the area and none measure up to the great community feeling, attentive and friendly trainers and the best members of CFEV. The trainers take the time to get to you as a person and push you to your full potential. Justin’s a great general manager who is constantly working to make this box better. If you’re looking to get out of the boring 24 hour routine, highly recommend this CrossFIt box.

Love CFEV! Everyone is friendly and pushes you to do better. I am a definite beginner and I am on my sixth solid week of Crossfit. I can already tell I am getting stronger each day! Thank you CFEV for having a great atmosphere, knowledgeable team members and butt kicking workouts that make you fall to the floor!

Attended a Saturday workout at CrossFit East Village and enjoyed the difficulty level of it. Most were basic exercises with the crossfit style (the range of motion was more of the cross-​fit style). It was a timed workout of the day, so it was motivational to have the support of the trainer as well as fellow CrossFitters in the class. There was a big group waiting outside for the workout when I arrived at 9:45am, but as soon as we were let in, the staff took care of us (newbies and members alike) pretty efficiently. CrossFit East Village also offers lectures on the Paleo lifestyle and food. Clean facilities and ample amount of exercise space. I dig it!
