Established in 2009.

Team Nogueira is considered by many to be the premier team within the MMA industry. Today, this prestigious team has made their way to San Diego with hopes to not only further their careers, but to also pass on their knowledge to the next generation of professional athletes that may someday represent the Team Nogueira family.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is a Brazilian mixed martial artist known for his technical mastery of Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu. He competes in the heavyweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, where he is a former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion.

Antônio Rogério Nogueira is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist currently signed with the UFC. Also a proficient amateur boxer, he was the 2006 and 2007 Brazilian Super Heavyweight Champion. He also won a bronze medal in the 2007 Pan American Games.

As my contract comes to an end, I totally recommend this MMA gymn to those who looks for a hobby, a work out, and self defense lesson all in one!
I usually take Muay Thai classes twice a week, and if i do have the time, I would go to the strength/​conditioning class. THEY MAKE YOU SWEAT ALOT!
The coaches are very humble, funny, and they really want you to improve as you take their classes/​program.
It is a tad pricey, but totally worth it!
Totally coming back during the summer: D

Kru Carl and staff run a top notch Muay Thai Program! If you want to learn Muay Thai, this is one of the best places in SD to train at. From the coaches to the students, everyone will make you feel like a part of a big family. Even if you’re hitting each other in the face, the goal is to always make each other better. Everyone knows to leave their egos at the door, and you wouldn’t find one person here that’s not friendly.
Besides Muay Thai, Black house also offers jiu jitsu, strength and conditioning, and boxing classes. Their facility is huge, complete with an octagon cage, a boxing ring, weights section, bags section, and a huge mat area. The place is always kept clean and tidy, which is a huge plus.

So far we love this place. My son, who is 5, attends classes here. Everyone is very nice and the coaches are great with the kids. I love the fact that we pay monthly and he can go to as many classes as he likes. They have kids Muy Thai, Jiu Jitsu and MMA. We’ve been taking my son there for about a month and can see him improving with each class. There are two reasons why I am giving them 4 out of 5 stars, both of which would not stop me from taking my son back here. First, they charge the same amount per month for kids as they do adults. Usually kids are cheaper, but they do offer military and LE discounts, and considering the number of classes he can attend is unlimited, it’s not too big of a deal. Second, you have to buy your own belt for Jiu Jitsu. It’s understandable that you’d have to purchase your own gear, i. e, gloves, gi, shin guards etc., but in my experience if a belt is required for a class, it’s usually provided by the gym. Again, no biggie. All in all, we are very happy here and would definitely recommend it.

I went in today for my free class and it was so great! I’m definitely getting a membership. The class members were very helpful and understanding of me being a first timer. The coach was great at getting me ready for this. I can’t wait to come back!

I’ve only taken one class here so my thoughts are a little limited but I took a jiu-​jitsu class and enjoyed the class. At least the class that I went to was mostly white and blue belts. Everyone was really nice, and the sales staff did a good job. The gym was a little pricier than most mma gyms, but they have a big name associated with this gym and I would assume better quality instructors all around, but like I said I only took the one class.

Ok, so I’ve trained at a variety of places over the years prior to moving to San Diego. By far, my favorite place to train.
There are many attributes I could rattle off, many of which are covered in other reviews and accurate, but the number one factor to me that sets this place apart is the attitude, vibe and overall spirit of the place.
Entire staff is professional, social and actually care about customers learning and achieving their goals. Whatever your goal is, you feel like they are right there behind you. Instructors are GOOD, know there stuff but without the attitude.
I attend the cardio boxing, Muay Thai and Gi Jujitsu. Enjoy all of the classes. My only critique is I wish Saturdays had more classes and wish they had a mid afternoon class (3 or 4) but hey, most of these guys presumably work elsewhere during the day.
If you’ve considered trying something beside a typical gym, want to get in shape, or want to learn martial arts in an environment that welcomes beginners, check it out.

I’m taking the 11 am BJJ class with Eduardo. I have only taken 8 classes and can honestly say I’m addicted. Awesome instructors, 5 star facility, and superb training. The other students there are all equally great. No one acts like a tough guy or girl, and we all support each other. If your thinking of training elsewhere, your making a huge mistake.

I joined the Blackhouse family since last year and have never regretted the decision leaving 24 hour fitness gym. I didn’t join the gym to learn martial arts like others here. I joined to get back in shape and thought it would be something I may stick to longer than fitness gym workouts.
I was right because it’s been a year and for the first time in my life I see definition in my abs. That’s right folks, I have a 6 pack now! I think they reason why the workouts here work so well is because your working new muscles all the time. The classes are never mundane. If you love the technical aspects of martial arts, this mma gym should be on the top of your list.

Joined this gym specifically to develop a better overall MMA game and time flies when you train with more experienced group of individuals. I’m one of the best jiu jitsu black belts in San Diego and have trained with the best of them at nearly every martial arts gym in the country. I’ve won countless jiu jitsu competitions globally and this is where I hone my jiu jitsu skills at locally. San Diego is the mecca for brazilian jiu jitsu at the moment and this is a gym that’s best suited for this purpose.
Many MMA fighters around the world fly over to San Diego because of the diverse talent pool we have in martial arts. I’m glad that I live here and at the same time still mix it up and train at other gyms. I still think the jiu jitsu program here is the best. The gym is in a cleaner part of San Diego and traffic is sometimes a nuisance during 5−6pm. Besides that issue, at least you get quality martial arts training at a reasonable price. Being from Chula Vista it’s a bit of a drive but it’s worth it. To keep the misses entertained, they have cardio boxing, trx, and muay thai kickboxing classes for women also.

Good instruction is the best thing going for this gym besides how enormous the school is. Training hard doesn’t necessarily make you better in a faster amount of time. It depends on how smart you train and how receptive you are to instruction. This gym name is known throughout other martial arts academies as one of the best.
When I first became a member at Black House MMA, I hopped from gym to gym looking for the best to train with. I would mention names of other gyms to all the other schools I was checking out. Black House was the only one that all the gyms knew and had nothing bad to say about them.

I brought my kids here to try the Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu, and Boxing. I’ve taken them to other places to also try out kid programs that are similar. You can really see the difference between Black House and other places. I’ve noticed at this place the instructors not only try to teach the kids muay thai/​jiu jitsu/​boxing, they also try to teach the kids respect and discipline — not just for themselves, but for others as well. They also take their time to help each kid with properly executing form, so they don’t look like a hot mess. I finally know what ‘shrimping’ is… the first time I saw my kids do this was at some other gym and my first thought was «what the heck are they doing?» Believe me. it looked like a hot mess, especially when a group of kids are doing it in their own version of shrimping. But when I took them here to Black House the instructor actually taught them the correct way to do it. He went up to each kid to make sure it was being done correctly.
They also offer different options for you to pick. A majority of other places require you to do a year contract with them. Here you can pick from: annual, 3 month, 6 month, month to month. Which works for us because my kids do so much sports and doing a year contract just won’t work. AND they give military discounts.
The place is clean and doesn’t smell like stinky feet like most gyms do. The location for us is really convenient since we live in Mira Mesa.
I haven’t signed a contract with them just yet tho, there’s still a few more places I’m taking my kids to try before we decide where they want to go. But so far they said they really do like this place A LOT.
Oh, and the entire staff is extremely professional and friendly.

This gym has martial arts influenced workout classes that are the best at burning calories while not losing focus. They have a few options but I personally enjoy the TRX classes and the cardio kickboxing.
These types of exercises are excellent for keeping your figure. It doesn’t add unnecessary muscle definition. I don’t want to look like a man! You get stronger and just look more tone. I can’t speak for all the women, but that’s what I want out of a good fitness workout.
I was totally hooked after TRX classes with Gary for a week, when I first joined 6 months ago. Gary’s teaches his classes by demonstrating the exercises on the TRX straps. If he notices your form is off, he’ll help you correct it. Than he finishes it off by doing the TRX exercises with you. It’s great because you can look at his form while working on yours.
The end result from this type of training at the gym for 6 months has led to me dropping 4 sizes back to size 2. I personally beat my best record by 2 sizes. I had such a hard time at first, but after two weeks it became natural. Gary gives you that individualized personal trainer like feel to it and in turn makes me lose weight faster.
If you take the jiu jitsu class, take your best friend to join with you. My best friend and I take jiu jitsu classes together at night and totally dig it. She beats me most of the time because she’s stronger, but it’s still just fun to take together. Beats taking pilates at smelly fitness gyms any day of the week.

I wasn’t sure what to expect coming to this martial arts school. Was a little intimidated at first, but after watching the brazilian jiu jitsu class unfold. I signed up right on the spot.
Watching the intermediate jiu jitsu classes taking place was really inspiring and I still remember it til this day. I even learned some jiu jitsu moves tht day by just watching.
It’s been 4 months now and i’m still a white belt. One thing though, I feel like I can submit anyone! Well to be more specific, anyone that doesn’t practice jiu jitsu. The feeling feels great just having the know how. I’ve already tested it on a few friends, they slowly joined weeks later after I took the plunge. Yeah, i’m the man!
Right now, I know martial arts will be a part of my life now. Love this gym and what it has done for my now healthy lifestyle.
P. S. The jiu jitsu class is coed BTW, so don’t forget to cut your toe nails boys. I can’t stand jiu jitsu class with this one specific friend of mines. I have already forewarned him that he has dagger like toe nails. I told him that women wouldn’t find that attractive, so he (Mark) cut them. LOL

I’ve been to yoga class, pilates, kickboxing, etc. My newest venture of late has been with the boxing gym. After Unilocaling for boxing gyms around La Jolla. I found Black House MMA gym on Miramar which was real close. The only other nearby option was the boxing gym on Genessee, and their ratings weren’t as good.
I’m glad I went with the membership at Black House MMA gym because they have more than just boxing classes. Best gym ever for self defense training. They teach various forms of martial arts and boxing is just one of the arts.
One thing you can count on is that you won’t get bored here with their revolving mixed martial arts schedule. Since you don’t get bored, your more susceptible to sticking with the workouts.
I’ve lost 25lbs in only 2 months without changing my diet. When I free up some time, I want to start their muay thai classes with Alex. The trainers help you get the most out of your workout.

OK, I am not one of those Martial Arts girl but was looking for something dynamic. Went there and Carl (my actual coach) explained all about it and patiently heard my necessities. I have been taking private lessons with coach Carl, who is the best coach I could ask for. There are no many girls at the gym, but they should start! It is a great cardio/​toning class, so much fun and I have been losing more weight than I could ever imagine. Staff is very friendly and willing to take comments/​suggestions. Since they have a special going on, I hardly recommend you to try it out.
Restrooms and changing rooms are bright clean as well as the gym/​cages (it does not smell like a lockroom at all)! Girls, I encourage you to do for great calorie burning and self defense!
Five stars are not enough!
If you are looking for private lessons, ask for CARL!!! He will do the best for you :)

«Recommend the Black house Gym for the Hardcore, the Fan and the Family»
Pro: Great group of instructors, and members, I had my first strength and conditioning session at the gym this week and it was awesome! The instructor Erin ran us through some intense 1 minute drills and by the end of the hour I was gasping for air and cussing at myself. I hate the instructor Erin already (LOL in a good way of course) one of the things that I noticed was how clean the place is, everything is well kept up.
Cons: Nothing at the moment to report as negative.
Military Discount: 5⁄5 — they do and that is a plus in my book
Presentation: 5⁄5 stars — presentation is everything, this place rocks
Location: 4⁄5 stars — not as close as I’d like but more favorable then most
Customer Service: 5⁄5 stars — great staff
Return Value: 5⁄5 stars — plan on it
Overall: 4.8 stars
I will say this, aside from the nice training facilities and great instructors, the people that workout here also make the place what it is. Everyone was very supportive and encouraging as we trained.
They also train kids so it’s a great convenience for me to train at the same place and time my kid does.

I’ve been a member here for almost a week and i feel i’ve learned alot already. The way things are broken down in class is amazing. Bravo for that! The other members here are helpful as well and just wanna plain help you while they improve themselves. Another thing that i enjoy about this gym is the fact that alot of people’s focus seems to be on fighting competitively rather than fitness (which is the way a fight gym should be) Don’t worry if you’re just interested in training for fitness, this is a good gym for that as well espec with the strength and conditioning class. At my old gym the focus seemed to be more on fitness unfortunately and thus it was like pulling teeth to find someone to spar with or do padwork with. Here, it’s very easy to find someone to work with. The trainers here are second to none, they all have a deep passion for their respective disciplines and they’re really nice to top it off. They are truly class acts. I don’t regret my decision to switch to here. I feel like im in very good hands and that my game is going to improve tremendously! Besides this has the blackhouse stamp on it and it’s owned by the nogueira brothers, can’t get any more legit than that!

I also wanted to say that i live downtown and my old gym was like a 5 min drive from me. I drive 17 miles to this gym and it’s about 20 min or so. Yes the gym is that good to make me drive that distance back and forth. I normally wouldn’t do something like that, so i recommend that you come and check it out you wont regret it!
