History

Established in 1970.

The original Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park was created in the early 1970s by owner/operator Diane Powers. On the site had been the rundown, boarded-up Casa de Pico Motel, but interior designer Powers dared to undertake a legendary transformation, leasing the arid property from the state to fulfill her dream of recreating the beautiful bazaars of Mexico that she had long-admired.

In 2005, Powers lost the lease for the property, which had grown to incorporate 16 shops and four restaurants, including Casa de Pico and Casa de Bandini, and had become the most lucrative concession in California’s State Park system.

By June 2005, the former Bazaar del Mundo moved to its new location adjacent to Powers’ Casa Guadalajara restaurant. The new Bazaar del Mundo Shops, a labyrinth of specialty, Mexican-spirited boutiques, overflows with treasures from around the globe, and offeres yearly cultural events.

Meet the Business Owner

Diane P.

Business Owner

Ms. Powers graduated college with honors, earning a B.A. in Design from San Diego State University. In 1968, she bought renowned designer Ilse Ruocco’s firm, and began extensive travels throughout Mexico and other Latin American countries. It was then that the inspiration for a Mexican attraction began, as she imagined combining the country’s cuisine, arts and crafts, landscape and architecture into what became one of San Diego’s top three visitor destinations.

In 1971, Powers won the lease to the Old Town State Historic Parks property and opened the Bazaar del Mundo, which became a leading Southwest tourist destination, and the most successful concession in the California State Park system. Over the years, Powers’ Bazaar del Mundo has been credited for attracting Old Town’s more than 6 million visitors annually — an accomplishment that warranted her being inducted into the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau’s (ConVis) Visitor Industry Hall of Fame in 2001.
