I have probably been here over 500 times over the years. Best sandwich in San Antonio. Get a bowl of the beans instead of the small cup, you will not be sorry. The half-serious is the best thing around.

The ultimate sandwich shop. A mom and pop family joint that’s been around forever. I’ve been going to this place since I was a teen. It’s been a staple in the area for years. I recommend«the serious» sandwhich and you will need a serious appetite to eat it. So just go for the half of a serious. I still haven’t had a bad experience. Some people are just used to national chain bullshit shops.

BESTSANDWICHSPOTINSA I know my sandwich spots and this place is by far the best spot to grab a classic Italian or even a Reuben. I myself recommend the serious sandwich for first timers… They sell this monster by the half or whole, you only need half trust me. I gladly drive across town to get my sandwich fix, don’t care about the distance because this place is that good.

This place was packed for lunch! So my standards bar was high. I got the meatball sandwich. It was not what I expected. The meatballs were cut in half to make the sandwich washer to eat, I guess. But, it also let any flavor the meatballs had escape. This is the type of joint that sells everything separately i.e. Chips, brownies, etc. so I imagine the bill can add up right very quickly. My husband really enjoyed the beans served with his sandwich. As for me, I didn’t have an experience that compels me to return.

Good Italian eatery. Had the half-serious sandwhich. Was going to get a tuna sandwhich when an employee recommended I get a «serious» sandwhich. So I did & experienced something all together great! Flat bread pizza crust like filled with oh my gosh delicious! Never had anything like & very pleased. Leaving satisfied, I know what I’m getting next time & can’t wait to return. Tip: Get Serious.

Zito’s is a bangin’ deli! Fresh bread baked on site, fresh-cut meats and cheeses, all meals made to order. Staff is friendly and helpful, portions are gigantic, and prices are extremely reasonable. Their specialty is the Serious Sandwich: a monstrosity with salami, two types of ham, provolone and cheddar cheeses, olives, onions, lettuce, and tomatoes, served on a flatbread. This sandwich is a monstrosity. Even the half-portion is enough for two! Add on a side of chips or a soup, and you’re set for an entire day. Line moves relatively fast for placing your order, but everything is made to order so it might take a bit longer when things are backed up. Call in your order for pickup if you’re in a hurry. Only downside to this place is their shortened lunch-only hours, double-check that they’re open before heading over.

We were looking for a good sandwich place near us and Unilocal directed us here. It was delicious. My husband had the Manhattan on wheat. It had corned beef, mustard, cheese and manhattan sauce. He loved it. I had the Serious. It has 2 kinds of ham, salami, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions and black olives. The bread was a flatbread and it was delicious! I had the half size and still took home part of it. Don’t let the long line at the door deter you from coming in. They make everything fast and fresh. We will be back!!!

Original. Amazing. Sooooo delicious. I can’t find another sandwich shop like it. Ask for the half-serious sandwich unless you have a gargantuan appetite, in which get a whole serious instead. Places like this are truly special. In case you can’t make it to their Broadway location, visit the store off of Callahan instead.

This place rocks! I love the Serious sandwich, but I’ve never had anything I don’t like. The Reuben, tuna, & Italian sandwiches are superb. What differentiates this sandwich shop from all others is the bread. It’s like a schlotzskys sourdough smashed and baked, kinda like a pizza crust.

My first visit here was a very pleasant surprise! It’s in a small shopping district that is very easy to miss. The outside is not very notable, but the inside has several tables although it does get busy around noon. Come early and you will get faster service. I had a basic sandwich with Italian meats. It was very warm and tasty and the meal comes with chips. I like the flat round bread and the portions are huge! Definitely go for half a sandwich because it’s about the size of a full sandwich. The dressing is like a light Italian vinegar and the veggies tasted very fresh. I would definitely go back and the prices are fairly reasonable, about $ 8 for a full sandwich and $ 7 for half. Comes with chips and a drink if you want to make it a combination.

Way overhyped. Sandwich was average, a low budget but over confident schlotzskeys. Place is grunge and tatters. Wouldn’t want to see the kitchen. Three kids working the counter calling each other dude didn’t seem interested in serving customers. Kept hearing the F-word and stuff about memes and did you see that F-in video dude. Had to ask them to put ice in the machine. Asked for a cinnamon roll advertised on all the tables. Give the guy $ 5. The roll costs $ 4.06 tell him to keep the change in the tip jar. Comes out 15 mins later and says sorry dude couldn’t get the microwave to work and they don’t have cinnamon roll(called a manske roll) and he gives me $ 4.06. Came here based on Unilocal reviews. Won’t come again.

Well clearly, most people come here for the Serious Sandwich. And for good reason, it’s unique to Zito’s — comparisons to anything else are silly. You can’t beat it, hot and delicious from the oven, drooling a bit of cheese and smelling heavenly. I began eating here back when this was the new location for Mr. Zito, moving from behind this part of Broadway. His son, a racing enthusiast, runs the Callaghan location. So back in the late 80s, basically everything was the same except a few less sandwiches. Mr. Zito used to collect ‘gimme’ hats and the walls were covered with them. If I hadn’t worked nearby, I doubt I’d ever have explored the menu and tried everything at least once. The Roast Beef Italia sounds like a typical deli sandwich but something about the garlic butter makes it exceptional — I’ve only had it on dark bread. Like many of non-serious offerings, it comes with a tiny offering of beans, but you can always order a cup of them or potato salad. The sides are small but also only 85 cents. A new choice is the Reuben, made with deli mustard, and also a Manhattan. And all sandwiches come with the best pickle slice in the city. Nothing fancy here. You order at the counter and pay, then return when your number’s called. Regular customers know to bus their own table and not to drop the sandwich basket into the trash. In May 2014 they added some space in the strip center and it almost doubled their seating. Keep in mind, these aren’t steroid-induced meat monsters like Jason’s has, but they taste better and don’t dissolve the bread before you’re finished either. And the prices are excellent — check the website for the full menu.
