Palmer Course at La Cantera

This course is unreal. Stunning views, superb service… super, super tough. Makes for the perfectly frustrating day of bliss. That said, I am not a frequent golfer and I still managed to hang in there, so not impossible.
The GPS systems on the carts are helpful for blind shots… don’t forget to check for other carts on the map ;)
It is a little bit stressful to pace, but we managed to be ahead the whole time and if we played again here, would probably be able to relax a bit more.
I loved every moment of the day spent golfing at Palmer, and even though it is slightly pricey I would say worth every penny.
I bought our tee time as a gift for my husband and I’m pretty sure he’ll be eagerly anticipating the next holiday… he said it was the best course he has ever played!

Extraordinary course. The greens will give you a whole new appreciation for PGA putting game, absolutely. Make sure your approach shots stick close to the pin or else,…you’re in big trouble. Quite a few blind tee shots that are challenging but fun. Each cart has it’s own individual ball cleaners that you usually see at #1 tee box at your local courses. Yep, Cool. The digital course computer monitor is really neat n helpful. You can keep score, shows your yardage to the pin, next bunker, closest cart, back of the green, etc etc. Its sick. I’ve heard the resort course is about 7 strokes more forgiving but won’t find out for myself until tomorrow. I’ll never forget my first time playing The Palmer. It was a real treat!

A visually stunning course. Significant elevation changes with great views of the San Antonio skyline, Six Flags, and the LaCantera resort. Course stretches to 6926 yards from the tips with a mix of blind tee shots, forced carries and some water holes on the par 3s. Must be precise with your tee shots or you will lose golf balls — bring enough ammo.
Fairways here are fairly generous and the difficulty of the tee shots are mitigated if you play the right tees for your ability, Hard part for me was the approach shots to the greens and putting. Greens themselves are pretty big. Problem comes with the elevation changes and exposed nature of the course. Played on a fairly calm July day but the winds definitely impacted shots as the course sits (it appears) on some of the highest land in the area. Further, had a lot of elevation change — looked like 100+ feet in some cases tee to green. Not used to that in the vast prairie land that mostly describes the state of Texas. Made clubbing a difficulty and was surprised at where my ball stopped both long and short of my expected target.
Greens are built into the side of hills on what was once an old quarry. When you’re standing on them, they look and feel pretty flat. From up close, most putts don’t look like they break that much. When you step back and take a wide-​angle look at the greens, you notice significant elevation change and slope. Surprised at the number of putts i simply misread. You have to take a step back.
Course really needs to be played more than once to fully appreciate what they offer here. Great views, golf that makes you think and a very nice clubhouse to enjoy after the round. Can’t wait to come back.

The Palmer Course was fantastic (very challenging). The staff was extremely helpful, and service stupendous. What was not to like? Played 36 holes and enjoyed every one of them (well, not the ones I doubled; but the others!).

Hands down the most spectacular course in San Antonio!
Played this course for the first time two weeks ago and was completely blown away. The drive to the course was very scenic, and had a «private» feel to it. Upon arrival we were immediately greeted by the valet and clubhouse staff. Everyone we encountered from the pro shop down to the starter was extremely friendly and really made you feel like a member. The amenities were great, and the food was delicious.
The course was in great shape, and was every bit as tough as other reviews that I’ve read. Multiple sets of tees on each hole ensures that you have the option to not bite off more than you can chew, but none will be what is considered «easy». The natural terrain is what makes this course difficult to score well, enjoyable to play, and beautiful to look at. There will be holes that will allow you to grip and rip, while you should probably keep your driver in the bag on others. All fairways were in great shape, with discernable second and third cuts of rough. Greens are well-​sized with no lack of undulation, and are moderately paced. The back nine, in my opinion, has a small leg up on the front in all aspects, but both are equally enjoyable.
All in all, a great experience. Playing for full price is definitely worth the value, and if you are able to get a discounted tee time, all the better. I will recommend this course to anyone in the area, and I can’t wait to get back to play it again.

Perhaps one of the best kept secrets in San Antonio is the Beer Pairing Dinner that Neil Butler, the leading food and beverage supervisor hosts every other month in the Palo Duro Pavilon. Thus far I have attended a Unibroue Pairing, a Brooklyn Pairing and a Chimay/​Schneider Weisse pairing. The price is anywhere from $ 49 to $ 85 including gratuity. The beers are poured generously and paired with a five to six course dinner. The dinner is always well thought out and it is fun way to learn how to pair beer with each course. There will usually be a representative of the particular brewery giving a short, informative and entertaining presentation with each beer. After the Dinner the Chef greets the guests and explains his thought process on the different pairings. The food is always delicious. Here is a quick example of the Unibroue Beer Dinner we enjoyed: Assorted Classic Terrines paired with La Fin Du Monde, Crisp Bluebonnet Butter Lettuce with Ephemere Apple, Pan Seared Diver Scallop paired with Maudite, Grilled Buffalo Filet paired with Trois Pistoles and Chocolate Crème Brulee paired with Terrible.
The atmosphere is beautiful and relaxing, and the service is 5 star. Some of the outstanding servers that come to mind are Haley, Kourtney, Jennifer, Justina, Dirk, Vince, Adrianna, Stephen and of course Neil Butler who is always there to make us feel welcome and answer any questions we may have.

Awesome course! Extremely well maintained. It’s a tough course, but not so tough it’s annoying. Would love to play it again.

Frank ate the food at the clubhouse and it was good. This french dip was really nice and the ambiance is defintely clubhouse like.
The bar looked like a good place to drink a beer and talk about how great you are at golf. They had ESPN so beer and ESPN. Perfect combo for a post-​golf outing.

Okay, now that I have made the proper changes to the business information let me start out by saying that in fact this is not the course that they play the Texas Open on, it is actually the more scenic of the two courses. When deciding on either, know that your decision will be the right one no matter which one you play. If it is more important to you to walk in the footsteps of Justin Leonard and Tommy Armour the third then by all means play the resort course.
The Palmer course is tucked deep within the Hill Country and offers so much peace and serenity that you will forget that you are playing just a mile or so away from a major theme park. The vistas and views from atop some of the elevated tees on a crisp fall morning will literally take your breath away. This course is as unforgiving as it is beautiful so make sure you bring plenty of balls to replace the ones that fall into a ravine. You will find par 3’s that need to clear lakes and par 4’s and 5’s with blind tees where you will have to trust your instincts.
The time to play here is during the fall and winter two for one special where two can play for $ 110. Not only is it the best time to save money it is also the best time of the year to play. In mid December you may start off your round in 45 degree temperatures for a 8 am tee time but by the turn you are sure to be enjoying a gorgeous 68 degree day. For those of you visiting you can not do better than these two courses at the Westin La Cantera.

This was a pretty nice course. This is NOT the one that they play the tour event on. Lots of great elevations changes and overall in pretty good shape. The troon golf website has a great promo that is two for one greens fees. Would not pay the 140 they charge, but for 70 bucks it was a deal. Nice clubhouse and patio to enjoy a brew looking over the 18^th (Waterfall included). Have a steinerbock.
