It’s just really, really good. The fried egg sandwich is one of my family’s favorites. And the avocado toast is a staple whenever we visit. Great place. Great people.

Phenomenal bread, excellent sandwiches with quality ingredients, nice clean open space. Slow pace but good food made to order takes time folks. If you want fast, pre made blah food there are dozens of other places. Keep up the good job BH!!!

Love the food here as well as the general vibe of the employees. Friendly, a bit funky and fantastic food… feels very San Anselmo to me! The fried egg sandwich is amazing… the Cubano is darn good and the pastries are really wonderful too. Well done MHBB, or BB or Bread & Butter… only thing you could do better is have a single name that people remember you by as my friends & family all call you some variation! :)

MHBB is my favorite place to buy bread and all of their pastries are delicious, and their salads and their sandwiches. I love it all. The only thing I don’t love is that 4 times now I have gone in to by bread and they are sold out really early, before noon even. Bums me out every time, Please make more bread, you will sell more and have more, even happier customers!

Amazing array of artisanal breads and pastries, and market-driven eats that are well worth the drive from Berkeley to San Anselmo! Enjoy the goodness in the charming space there, take your treats back home, or both — either way, you’ll be back for more soon enough. And the owners are an awesome, community-oriented husband-and-wife team, a big plus if you care about supporting small, local business.

Drove by this place and saw it was crowded. Walked in for breakfast and had the fried egg sandwich along with ginger black berry kombucha. I have to say, it was delicious. It’s the bread that makes the fried egg sandwich. We also ordered citrus avocado salad and it was healthy on point, lol. Now I know why people were talking about their bread. Their cookies are also good. #SOLit Be right back…

Fantastic eatery. All the right ingredients. 1. Food: scrumptious, ample, a well-planned menu, five-star ingredients(I honestly expect the freshest fruits and veggies from Marin eateries… M.H. meets and excels the expectation), great coffee, prepared with savvy. Oh and all the right/best kitchen equipment. I mean, how else will you make the best pizza/pastry/bread/quiche EVARR without the right equipment. 2. Location: on the outskirts of the San Anselmo main street, but still walkable from Body Time and Book Passage. 3. Parking: the street parking is ample for the seating room, and little else competes with the public spaces. Also, there is Bike Parking out front(they may need to amend this for More Bike Parking). 4. Very well staffed. Plenty of fantastic people behind the counter. 5. Great problem solving for longer lines, ie: combing the line for instant orders(ie: just a poured coffee and danish can be helped first in crunch times). M.H. Bread and Butter, you give the locals something to be proud about. So, thank you for your excellence.

Could it be that I have a new favorite brunch spot in Marin? And most importantly, what have I been doing wrong that it took me until now to find you MH? We’re 5 for 5 so far, and counting, I’m sure. I wish someone had videotaped our faces when we tried the egg sandwich for the first time. The bread is thick and fresh and crispy but not hard, with egg and cheese and avocado. Honestly it’s simple, but every single ingredient stands out. And I have to talk about the french toast which is like no french toast I have ever tried. The egg must be whipped into the batter, and makes dipped bread french toast taste like a joke. Plus, it ‘s always paired amazingly, for example, with fresh figs. They make a great cappuccino, and their iced coffees have coffee ice cubes, lest a water ice cube were to melt and ruin my coffee. My one complaint is that their lunch menu(the extremely limited menu that I have tried) does not live up to my brunch hype. With that said, my boyfriend actually loved the lunch lamb sandwich we tried.

I was running the Ragnar Relay and in van 2. We stopped for breakfast to fuel up before our legs so we went to this cute little place. The menus are to your left when you enter. There’s a board above the register that has coffees and teas listed. We each ordered and were provided a number. The people working were friendly. Hipster. 100% hipster which is cool. I guess I was a little surprised by that since I was in Marin and not the Mission. I had the fried egg sandwich which was delicious. It was flavorful, with a perfectly cooked egg, and a tastey sauce. Nom nom nom. I’m dreaming about it as I right this. Most of us actually had that for breakfast and cleaned our plates. it came with like five specs of arugula on the side. :/I love my veggies but it’s cool. The bread was toooooo crispy on the edges though. We all sounded like squirrels biting into acorns trying to take a bite of our sandwich. I honestly thought I might crack a pearly white trying to bite into it. Oops. I would go back if I were in the area, but I will ask for them to not toast or lightly toast the bread though.

My husband and I loved the fried egg sandwich, perfect iced lattes with the in-house made vanilla bean simple syrup and the breakfast salad! Quick, easy and a trendy little setting to boot.

Yummm! The cookies… buttery, melt in your mouth, choco chip deliciousness! I also had the Lyonnaise Salad with pretty poached egg, it was a treat. chock full of rendered bits of pancetta, house made croutons, trumpet mushrooms, and a light vinaigrette. I will be back to try their many offerings, everything looks appetizing and it is a great spot to add to my lunch go to’s!

IT’S ABOUTTIME! I’ve always wondered why Marin, with a population who spend so much of their time reminiscing about baked goods in Paris, was devoid of good bakeries. Rustic popped onto my radar when we moved back here last year and now this… just 10 minutes from my house. Too close for my own safety really. If you’re bored to pieces with the terrible bread offerings around Marin make this your weekly bread stop. I only wish they had an express window for people just ordering bread. It’s packed at mealtimes and you have to wait through the line-up of San Anselmo ladies ordering sandwiches with 200 customizations(save us!).

We came for a café-style lunch and never wanted to leave. Somewhere between the salad with wild mushrooms, lardons, frisee, perfect egg and crunchy homemade croutons and the lamb tangine sandwich we realized we had found it. Simple, delicious, and terrific. A place with the same quality of food you might find at a great café in the city, out here on a side street in sleepy, sunny San Anselmo. We kept going with the perfect plate of fresh summer fruit that had everything we wanted(watermelon, blackberries, strawberries, peaches) and nothing we didn’t(i.e. no melon balls or apple, happily.) The toast with nutella topped with toasted hazelnuts was perfection. Despite feeling like a bakery café, they have beer, cider and wine on offer. I wish we could say we stopped there, but later there were baked goods, and yes, they were good.(Not that we needed gluten free, but the gluten-free chorizo and cheese muffin was equal measure savory and sweet.) I understand there is a Tartine connection(SF über bakery alums) and it shows: their baked goods are noteworthy. The only weak link is service –its friendly, but could be improved and streamlined given the popularity of the place. Bön Appetite(March 2015) may have discovered this unassuming spot before we did, but really it was Unilocal that got us here.(Thank you trusted food friend. You did not steer us wrong.) You will enjoy this place.

If you are a fan of Tartine in SF, you have to come to M.H. Bread. The bread here is as good, and I think the salads and sandwiches(especially the fried egg and cubano) are even better. The spinach salad is the best I’ve ever had. I’d also recommend the Four Barrel coffee and the Lev’s Kombucha. Yes, it’s pricey and crowded, but it is worth it, especially compared to a lot of so-so dining options in Marin.

If you’re after an incredibly delicious unique eating experience in the burbs then look no further. This is our second visit in two years & again we were blown away by the deliciousness! The quinoa peach bursts salad was by far a huge standout… but in saying that my husbands lamb Harissa sandwich was so delicious too! I’d definitely come back to San Anselmo just for this little bakery gem!

MH Bread & Butter is a bakery-slash-café-slash-restaurant serving the yuppy Marin crowd like myself. One of the people that is behind this venture used to be a baker at the famous Tartine Bakery in San Francisco; so you can already imagine what to expect: great quality & delicious baked goods at elevated prices ;-) This place is great for breakfast or a light lunch. They have open-faced sandwiches. Also, every first and third Thursday of the month, they have a special dinner; so check their website to see what’s being offered and if you can still sign up. I like combining a visit with a hike in the nearby nature reserves.

Unlike Cat(in a previous review), I did not go on a long bike ride(she instead took me on a leisurely hike), but I did find MHBB as delicious as she said it was going to be. Our friendship is hereby renewed for the next year. If anyone’s reading from Boston, I’d say that it’s like Flour with fewer baked good offerings but much better bread and pastries. I got the fried egg sandwich — the toppings were barely visible between the two gigantic slices of bread, but it was still filling and the avocado was certainly rich. We also ordered the kouign amann and the flourless chocolate cake — I’m all about the carbs so I won’t comment on the latter(everyone else liked it, though!), but the KA was excellent, flaky where it needed to be and just the right amount of sweetness.

Well apparently I’ve been missing out! I tried M. H for the first time this week. where have I been?! It reminds me of a combination of The Mill in sf and Farm House Local in Larkspur(this is a very good thing). They have toast! avocado toast!!! I’ll admit I can easily make this at home(and I do), but the bread makes it 100% worth the splurge. Add a side of poached eggs and you’re good to go! If you’re not into the toast they have plenty of other delicious items to choose from. They’ve got salads, couscous, sandwiches, pastries, yogurt and granola, etc. Everything looks incredibly fresh and it’s all plated beautifully! I also really enjoy the aesthetic of the café. I love the artwork, communal tables, and the old wooden frames that border the drink menu. The space is flooded with natural light, which makes it feel very peaceful. I plan to come back to study, have lunch with friends, and enjoy the lovely atmosphere!
