The University of Utah

All I can say is great campus, great school, great sports and great memories. What better way to knock out college than on one of the most picturesque campuses with amazing views of the Rocky mountains? Loving every minute of it!

A graduate of here where my mom received her PH. D from here and worked 27 years granted my ass half off tuition. Its a great school but it doesn’t give you the «college» experience. Meaning almost everybody is married. Ute football and plenty of other activities. Parking is tight and expensive. Prime real estate btw, a school on the mountain? Whats better then that? A hospital on the mountain. New construction of Law building, engineering building, dental school etc etc they love to build.

Best school in the state. I graduated from here. My father graduated from here. Truly a great learning environment. I’ve attended different colleges and they can’t compare to the U of U. First of all I just love the location. High up there. It’s got everything. Any major you can think of. Plenty of activities on campus. Great place to learn and make friends. And it’s for one of the best libraries ever. Plenty of computers to used and just about anything you need.

I came a year ago to visit my buddy who was attending the pharmacy school here. The drive from LA was a long one, totaling to 13 hours, which was split over two days. The university is found in the upscale part of town, near the start of the mountains that surround Salt Lake City.
The funny thing I noticed on my way here is that I was the only California car around a bunch of locals. On I went, until I found the student housing where my buddy was staying.
The housing was actually pretty nice. They consisted of 6 – 8 one-​bedroom apartments per floor, and the building was about 20 stories high. The rest of the campus was kept well, and was scattered about the uphill that led to the trail heads into the mountains.
There is a hotel on campus where visitors stay, usually relatives or professional school hopefuls. The hotel itself is pretty nice, with clean and spacious rooms. The hotel is two stories, hosts a free breakfast, and has many meeting rooms where conventions are held periodically.
The are is very safe, pretty quiet, and ideal for an academic life. The downtown area is a 15 – 20 minute drive from campus, and there are pretty good eateries close by. I did not hike the trails into the mountains, but I intend to come back to take full advantage of what nature has to offer in Utah.
It turns out their pharmacy school is one of the best in the nation. I can imagine the same for their medical school. Well, if I get admitted here, I will post updates. If not, I will post updates when I get the change to hike and ski the mountains. Stay tuned.

I love The University of Utah. It’s a broad listing for a campus that holds so much, but I have yet to be disappointed by the U. I’ll divide up the category a bit.
Education:
I’ve attended 2 – 3 years of class at UVU, so that’s all I really have to compare U of U to. All there is to say is that it isn’t even close. I coasted through UVU classes without a problem, never feeling like I was really learning much from the classes. I never felt like the teachers or advisors really cared much about me as a student and really weren’t that helpful in helping me find the right career path to work towards. Only two or three teachers there were memorable to me.
At U of U I feel the exact opposite. Even in large classes I’ve felt that the teachers have all done a great job of guiding me, answering specific questions, and other things like that. I feel like I’ve actually built good relationships with the professors and could go to them for career advice and more. I’ve been pushed very hard in my CS major classes. At the time it can be frustrating, but again the teachers have always been willing to help, talk things over, and do whatever it takes to help me succeed. The content of the classes has been fantastic as well. They really work towards making you a full stack developer, more than capable of dealing with real world problems, and want to see you do well. I can’t say enough good things about the professors in the CS department.
Again, it’s hard to directly compare one major at a school to another major at another school, and I’m sure UVU has some good programs, but I can say I wasn’t in a program even half as good as the one I’m at at the U now.
Sports:
Utah has a top 25 basketball team and a top 25 football team. They are only one of a few schools that can claim that right now. Sports games are a blast here and only getting better. The Pac-​12 transition was rough at the start, but that was to be expected. Now they are looking great. Being part of the Pac-​12 means awesome football schedules every year. Other teams in the area just don’t compare. Utah is hosting some of the best teams in the nation lately, and beating them… it’s a blast to be a part of. Free student tickets, decent seats, and more. It’s really an exciting time to be a U of U sports fan, especially compared to what the other teams in the state are doing ;)
Campus:
I love the campus, it’s beautiful. My favorite thing is the disc golf course. It’s 9 holes and the perfect length to play between classes. I play at least twice a week and still love it. It’s not the hardest course, but it’s a fun one. They hold plenty of great events on campus as well. They even had the Dali Lama scheduled to come, not many universities have pulled that off. Plenty of great events, plays, musicals, concerts and more are held here. Brand New, AWOL Nation, and a couple others have been great and cheap for students as well. They really take care of their students with fun on campus events.
Other thoughts… parking is still pretty bad, though they’ve recently added some structures. If you park after 10:30 you are usually fine depending on where it’s at. The CS buildings have good parking. You get a UTA pass included in tuition, use it. I drove my first year there and hated doing that. The next 2 years I lived downtown and took the bus every day. It worked out fantastic and was nice for last minute studying or reading. This year I’ve moved down to Lehi and have been using the Frontrunner and trax. So far so good. Not paying for gas has been really nice, and not paying for a parking pass is nice too.
Overall I love the U. It’s been a great experience so far and I’m proud to be a Ute!

I love the University of Utah.
After having been to many schools in the in the valley, BYU and Utah Valley University included I finally decided to finish out my education at the University of Utah. I’m really glad I did.
The campus is beautiful, located right on the mountains you have a beautiful view of the valley. Easily accessible from foothill or downtown Salt Lake City, it only takes me about 45 minutes to get from Provo to the campus on any given day.
Aesthetically some of the schools old but a lot of the new buildings are very impressive the new student center is incredible, with indoor pools rock climbing walls and other fun facilities.
The quality of education I have received here is unbelievable. They don’t really have adjunct professor’s, and the ones that they do have are phenomenal. Most of my experiences with undergraduate professors have been nothing short of amazing. if I haven’t been taught by a retired professional, it usually is a PhD student that had knows more on the topic than most people in the state.
Tuition is fair, the amount of food available on campus is adequate, and the ability to work with the business school mentors in order to help you find a job after graduation are All wonderful.
There really is too much to write about this in a single Unilocal review, so I will just end with this. The University of Utah has been better than all four of the other schools I’ve been to put together. The staff, the campus, just the entire experience in general. If you’re looking to further your education and move on to higher learning, this is definitely a great place to do it.

Was here for a meeting. I have never attended a school so this review is not regarding the quality of education, but with the experiences that I had on the campus. When I didn’t know how to get to a building on campus, I asked some people at a shuttle stop. They were very nice and told me where I needed to wait and what stop to ask for. Also the shuttle driver was very nice and told me how to get back to the hotel.

THE University of Utah is the best school in the state!
It is a research institution that has created innovations in mining and resource management, healthcare, computer science and virtually every other area of modern life. The University of Utah Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Center are among the best in the nation.
I received my degree from «The U» and I can’t imagine a better college experience anywhere else. My lovely daughter attended private institutions in New York and SLC and ended up transferring here. She says the education she’s receiving at my alma mater is every bit as good as what she was receiving at the high-​dollar places.
Then there’s the athletic department. The Mighty Utes were the original BCS busters in football and were also the first team to bust the BCS TWICE, hammering their competition (Pitt and Alabama) in both of their big-​time bowl games. They are now in the PAC-​12 and the sky is the limit! The Utes have also OWNED their rival, TDS, over the past 20 years, winning 14 of the last 21 games and sweeping the last 4. Throw in a couple of humiliating beatdowns (48 – 24 and 54 – 10) and you have complete domination. The basketball team is improving and should be a national power within the next few years.
The «U» campus is absolutely beautiful and provides some amazing views of the city and mountains.

I graduated in 2008 and have to say that the U of U is just a degree mill and I’d recommend you get your degree anywhere else. In my experience in some classes your grade isn’t based on your body of work. Rather, you’re given a grade on how well the T.A.‘s liked you. No kidding. If you’d like proof I recommend taking Duncan Metcalfe’s field school.
Also, being a degree mill, the U of U doesn’t really have much of an alumni program. Sure, they have a building on campus… But that’s about the extent of it. They do have a web page touting their chapters, though it seems they must have just copied that page from a better university’s website.
As other people have mentioned, if you’re unfortunate enough to go to the U, it is a commuter campus. You will not be able to find parking… Just give up now. They want your money, not necessarily to have you in class. I strongly recommend taking Trax to campus. Yes, this can be an arduous journey in the winter but it’s really the best way to make sure you actually have some chance of getting to class.
Another piece of advice is to live off campus. Unless you’re super rich and don’t mind having to drive to class (where you can’t find parking). It’s MUCH cheaper to live off campus and it’s relatively easy to find a place within walking distance of your classes.
Lastly, if you’re still silly enough to want to attend here, don’t transfer from another school without a degree. Even though the U is a member of W.U.E they won’t accept most of the credits you earned at another school. Any credit you are given will most likely be given through appeal.

This school has no admissions standards and will therefore take just about anyone that feels like giving college a try, albeit a quick one much of the time, given the rising drop-​out rates at Utah public colleges.

But there isn’t a spot — I continue to drive.

«Sorry, prof, that we are late,
You see parking here, is not so great.»
He looked at me with understanding and smiled —
Says, «Don’t get me all riled.»
In his hand is a parking ticket
I thought, hmm, perhaps we should picket?
You see, the number of parking passes they sell
Exceed the student/​prof spaces quite well.
An economics lesson in the making
And broke student’s money they be taking!
If you have to go to the U
Avoid parking, that’s what to do.
Hire a taxi, it will be cheaper in the end
OR, perhaps enlist a chauffeur or friend
It will cost you a heck of a lot less
Yup, the parking there is truly a mess!

This is where I went to school, my days at the union playing pool and sleeping on the lawn were some of the best days of my life. Live close and ride your bike cuz parking sucks

The people here are definitely more open-​minded, earth conscious, and diverse than other universities around (cough, BYU). Tuition is better than private universities but byu has us beat ($ 2k versus $ 8−15k). I like that we have free public transit, making it easier to commute to school and around campus. The grounds are pretty and they are always improving campus wit new buildings. Four stars instead of five because tuition keeps spiking.

This is such a broad listing. I mean, the University of Utah is a pretty big place, and so I just have to give maximum love and credit to the place.
From a student’s perspective, I have no idea. I never went there.
From a fan’s perspective, I’m generally supportive. I’m an MSU man myself (Go Green! Go White!) but I’ll root for the home crowd, for sure. I’ve been to all kinds of sporting events here, and they’re always fun. This transition to the Pac 12 is interesting, but it will hopefully work itself out.
From a campus perspective, there’s lots to like here. I’m often up for the Post Theater, and was for the old museum, for Kingsbury, for all kinds of culturally enriching experiences. Nothing but love. It’s a nice campus. Walking friendly, public transit friendly, and like any college campus in the universe, typically a parking nightmare.
Surely this review has put you, prospective student, over the edge in deciding to attend.

I got my MA degree at the U and had a wonderful experience. My department was tough and there was always the stress of a difficult program, but the faculty are exceptional at the U. Most have PhDs and reputable research within their field.
The library is amazing. They have just about everything, and if not, they get it for you and quick.
The athletics are fun and reasonably priced to attend (aside from football).
It is a commuter school, so the school spirit isn’t what you expect from a major university, but overall, it’s a great school with a great reputation.

In this back-​to-​school season, I figured I should share one of my best learning experiences.
I spent one year at the U as an out-​of-​state student with a full ride academic scholarship, all the way back in 2001 – 2002. This was my first college experience, and I transferred after just one year. My reason for attending the U was the proximity to great snowboarding: Brighton was less than 30 minutes away, and I spent many afternoons riding up there, enjoying the beauty of Utah’s outdoors.
My transfer was in no way a reflection of the education I received at the University of Utah, but was more reflective of a general feeling of not fitting in as a non-​LDS member within the state of Utah. Unfortunately, if you’re not an LDS member, you really have to get used to the feeling of being an outsider. It’s not a terrible thing, but it limits your friend groups and dating candidates, which was unacceptable to my young 18 year old mind.
Today, when I discuss college with my sig fig, he often references this great memory of interacting with other bright minds, challenging yourself intellectually, and feeling like a part of something bigger. At first, I didn’t relate to these thoughts: my alma mater, WWU, didn’t really make me feel that way at all. But when I dredged my mind, my experience at the University of Utah really did exemplify all of these feelings and experiences, and more. The Honors College provided an especially amazing opportunity: smaller classes within a big university, great intellectual stimulation and challenge, and a very interesting, intelligent cohort of students. I had the opportunity to take graduate-​level courses, learn about great new things from accessible and friendly professors, meet interesting people, and blossom and grow.
Another plus to the U is just how efficiently the campus operated. If you needed advising or help with transferring classes, there was always somebody in the administration who would step up and help you. I never heard «that’s not my job», as I did so often at my next college.
Over ten years later, I still regret transferring out of the U; the opportunities for learning and growth were wonderful there. If you have the opportunity to attend the U, I recommend taking it. Work hard, learn a lot, and good things will happen!

Just a FYI:
Every February they always do a production of The Vagina Monologues. Definitely check it out if you have never seen it before. There’s humor and a seriousness about it that makes it worth watching.

I am a grad of the class of 2004. I came to the U of U by way of Hawaii and Pennsylvania. The college selection process seems a lot better now because of improved accessibility to information. If I had access to sites like Wikipedia back in 99, I think my college choice would have been a lot different.
I did two years of schooling at Penn State. The decision made mostly by reputation and not in regards to other factors like locale. I admit it was very reckless to choose a school 5000 miles away without a visit. The experience was very eye opening and a world away from the life I lived in Hawaii. But in the end, I needed a change.
I think the Winter Olympics in SLC had a lot to do with my decision to come to the U of U which was around the time that I applied. I was not sure what I would major in, but I thought that I needed a fresh start at the U. Again I took the plunge of going to a school without a visit.
But my experience at Utah was very different from that at PSU. I think the atmosphere there was very conducive to getting me to a place of knowing what to do with my life. It just was a better fit for me I think. I was very fortunate to complete my degree with a minor as well in 4 years total. I think the U does a good job of getting students the courses they need to graduate.
The U is a commuter school, so school activities are not that strong. But the U is in Salt Lake City which is an excellent city with plenty of things to do. And a much closer fit to the life I had in Hawaii which translated well.
As for the academics, the classes I had were good. Though at least in my program, there did seem to be a high amount of classes taught by graduate students as opposed to professors. I found this less prevalent at Penn State which has a higher academic level and where courses tend to be tougher. However, I felt that I connected and learned more with the curriculum at the U because of the way it was taught. A part of this has to do with the fact that I felt more comfortable at Utah.
Overall, I liked my experience at the U of U. But the big point I am trying to make here is to do your homework about selecting schools. Preferably with a campus visit. It is truly one of the biggest choices you will make in your life.
