Straw Market

This was my first time here, I’ve always wanted to stop in! It’s a cute little place, good service, and I got a yummy grilled cheese for $ 3. I will be back to try a cinnamon roll cause they looked awesome.

Best bang for your buck breakfast around. Nothing overly fancy or complicated. Basic breakfast fare for a less than basic price.

The food is decent. Omelettes are good, average portion size. Hash browns portions range from sizable to tiny with no rhyme or reason as to why. The cinnamon roll was quite good. Wheat toast and house made strawberry jam was quite good. Grinder was average.
However the service is abysmal. When arrived at about 1:15 on a Saturday. There was one other party and their order was nearly up. The server/​cashier slid two filthy tables together and didn’t bother to wipe them down. I asked her when we ordered to wipe the table and she said she would be right out.
Meanwhile, it took about five minutes to warm a cinnamon roll that was sitting in a display case while the server was busy doing nothing else. Once she brought the roll I lifted my drink and told the rest to do so «so she can wipe off the table.» She completely missed the cue.
After about 20 minutes one entrée was served. About ten minutes later the next one was served, and so forth until all five of us received our order serially, spaced out just enough so that all five of us got to eat their food solo.
About 30 minutes (!) into the experience the server came to inform us they couldn’t make one of the entrees due to lack of ingredients. It was quite a new experience for the family to sit idly watching one member of the family eat his/​her food while everyone else had nothing to do.

My experience was mixed at best. Arrived at the Straw Market about 1030 on MLK Day for the first time. Be prepared for a very sparse interior and ambiance. More carry out then comfortable eat in. You order at the counter and pick out your own flatware and the drinks are also self serve.
The menu is equally sparse with a limited selection. They were very unprepared for the crowd that arrived on a Monday national holiday so the service was poor. Only one cook and one wait person, bad staffing decision. We had to bus our own table so we had a place to sit and they had run out of coffee.
The positive is the food was reasonably good. We had an omelet and breakfast sandwich. Both came out hot, well presented and prepared. The staff was working hard but unprepared for the volume. Regardless, on it’s best day this is not a four or five star restaurant and is suffering from rating inflation.
I would recommend it but be prepared for the ambiance, service format and limited menu.

The best way I can describe the food at straw market is that it tastes like a breakfast you would cook for yourself at home, but in the best way possible. I’m talking about the type of breakfast you’d cook on a leisurely Saturday when you’ve got nothing better to do, but make yourself an incredible breakfast. Essentially, awesome, filling, everything a breakfast should be, and nothing it shouldnt be. The prices are cheap too! My personal favorite is the breakfast burrito with avocado and of course a warmed cinnamon roll on the side to share.
The atmosphere is pleasant and laid back, but occasionally seating is lacking during prime weekend breakfast hours (where isn’t it though if the food tastes good?). Also, sometimes food comes out in a flash and sometimes you’ll wait… for awhile. Just tell your friends to get started without you if need be and help yourself to another cup of coffee.

What a great place for breakfast — had a meat lovers omelette and a kick butt cinnamon roll– the roll was perfect not overly gooey like the chain stores, but a lighter consistency that said home made!!! Well Done

Cleanliness
Nothing to brag about. The ketchup and hot sauces are kept on a common table. the spouts are all crusty. Not excessively so — but not great. Bathroom was what you would expect from a hippy restaurant.
Professionalism
This is a hippy restaurant; not family oriented. The cashier had bright blue hair, very skimpy clothes, and a weight problem. The cook was clean but looked like he could have used a hot shower.
Food
This restaurant is famous for their cinnamon rolls. They are an option for every meal. They were not bad but I’m baffled at the popularity of the rolls. They are pre-​cooked and kept by the register. When you order they throw them in a dirty microwave on a piece of butcher paper. Tasty but nothing to write home about.
I would not say «avoid this place» but don’t go out of your way to eat here.

The price and quality of the desserts can’t be beat. I also got a sandwich that was good.

The experience at Straw Market was pretty incredible until poor customer service crept in.
The food was simple, but well done. I was feeling inspired by the concept of this place.
Then at the end when I went to pay, their card
machine malfunctioned and they weren’t sure if my payment had gone through. I wanted to pay for my food so I waited patiently for about 10 minutes. The entire time their employee seemed frazzled and defensive while the manager (owner?) seemed upset and impatient.
After a long wait I was treated rudely when I should have been offered something extra for having to put up with their technical difficulties.
Please remember the basics of customer service. This would have easily been a 4-​star review if you’d remembered to put the customer first.

The owner was right there talking to us during our entire time. He was helpful, genuine, and funny. I found parking easy and it’s only a hop, skip, and a jump from my apt. Don’t think many ppl know of this hidden gem. Open 7 days a week and as early as 6am. I love little intimate eateries like this.

I ordered a Spanish omelet full order. It came with hash browns and a cinnamon roll. Great prices and quick service. The son took our order and his pop made our food. Whimsical chandeliers and cosy atmosphere. The food was delicious! I give them only four stars because we wanted a quiche but the son said he didn’t feel like making it today. After you order and eat your food you go back up to the register to pay.

In short: The kind of food you could make at home. No fluff or fanfare. Cheap prices.
Ambiance: You don’t come here for the place. Reminds me of the hole-​in-​the-​wall chinese food takeaway spots in the strips malls of Southern California. I feel like I should be walking in to grab food to go, not sitting and eating. You can stay to eat, but if you’ve got any other option why would you?
Food: Reading through the other reviews, I feel like I’m missing something here (and it makes me kinda sad that so many people believe this qualifies as «Woohoo! As good as it gets!» food). It wasn’t bad, but it certainly isn’t memorable or rave-​worthy. It’s exactly like the stuff I make at home most mornings for breakfast. It even comes out looking like the eggs and toast from my kitchen — no fancy side garnishes or herbs sprinkled on top, just food. Coffee was eh, just standard coffee.
Price: This is where this place wins. Aside from making it yourself, you would be hard pressed to find a cheaper option.
Overall: Don’t come here if you’re looking for a place to go OUT to for breakfast. It certainly will not impress your co-​diner, if that is your aim. Do consider Straw Market if you are minding a tight checkbook and/​or need a quick, reliable take-​away breakfast option as you run off to work or school.

I’m usually a morning person, but not this morning. I just moved downtown yesterday and it quickly became apparent that if I was going to be productive and unpack i needed coffee and food ASAP. So somewhere low key but with good food. Drove the five minutes here. Serve yourself coffee. Veggie omelet. Hashbrowns. Hot sauce. Ketchup. I’m now revived, and that was for seven bucks! Totally worth it.

I live very close to this area, so I’ve seen the spectrum of different companies take up shop in this location. I think my favorite spot to date, and the one I have visited most often, is Straw Market.
Straw Market is a cute little café/​market that sells an array of food items, as well as miscellaneous gifts — usually seasonal ones. The prices here are excellent. I’m a fan of stopping in for a quick brunch, and I will leave with a stomach full of omelet, hash browns and toast (or cinnamon roll) for a grand total of $ 6.
All of their baked goods are $ 1 — and they become 50% off within the last hour or two of Straw Market being open for the day. Quick math says that’s… a total of .50 cents you could be paying for one of their giant cinnamon rolls! [A baked good that they easily could be selling for much more]. I mean, what?! These prices are stellar.
Since I am constantly craving eggs, my go-​to here is the Veggie Omelet. I tend to get the «full breakfast» that includes the potatoes and toast/​cinnamon roll. I am a fan of the cinnamon rolls — the frosting is plentiful, and though I never find them to be too sweet, it’s hard for me to finish one; sharing is the best option with these guys!
They have free WiFi here as well! What a great service to provide for customers! Having it definitely allows you to feel alright about hanging out for a while and doing some work.
The couple complaints about Straw Market I have include: It can get very smokey inside. So come prepared. It’s something you get use to while sitting in there, but it also adds to the heat factor. Also, their early hours are nice, but they seem to open whenever they feel like. There have been at least 3 times now that I tried to pop over for an early breakfast before work — and the doors are locked. So keep this in mind as well if you’re hoping to get in at an early hour.
Overall, the food is yummy, the service is fast, and it’s never too packed in here! Pop in and save money while eating yourself full.

Four stars for great food at a really reasonable price. I had a California omelet, which means it had two good sized slices of avocado on it.
They did microwave the cinnamon rolls, which was a bit of a turn-​off, but they were still really good, and for a dollar apiece!

Delicious. Just downright delicious. The omelets were great, the hash browns were yummy… And can we talk about this cinnamon roll? Warm but not too gooey. Just the right amount of icing and cinnamon. Just so darn good.
Love the weird light fixtures and the chalkboard wall. I could sit here all day on my computer.

Cinnamon rolls.

Only tried the cinnamon roll. It wasn’t overly sweet but still really good. Personally I prefer cream cheese frosting but it was still pretty good.
They have other baked goodies for only $ 1 too. I’ll have to go back and try those too.
Nice market feel with dining in option. The meal prices were really reasonable too. I’ll have to go back for a meal.

Oh Straw Market, how I adore you. I’ve been here every single day since last Saturday, sometimes even twice a day.
The beauty of this place is not that they are open Monday through Sunday, nor is it that its just a block away from my place, OR the fact that they’re a family-​owned spot that makes you feel welcome.
It’s the fact their food tastes the way that snuggling in your bed on a rainy Monday morning feels like (i.e. Wanting it to last forever because you know everything waiting for you once you leave your warm bed can’t possibly beat it). This feeling is only compounded by the fact that their prices are ridiculously cheap. I’m talking about $ 1 cinnamon rolls that taste better than Cinnabon. I love my husband but he once asked for half and I let him know that marriage, although legally binding, could not in any circumstance secure him a bite.
This is the type of diner that the Avenues needed. I’m also glad that I never have to wait for a table on a Saturday or Sunday morning. It’s the ideal breakfast/​lunch situation.

YAY. We loved this place and have been dying to have something move into this location. Such a fun area. I had the California omelet but almost cried when they said they were out of avocado. I mean without that you can’t call it California. But it was still REALLY delicious. Of course we also ordered cinnamon rolls. I mean for a dollar each i would buy some to feed the birds but they are really too good to share especially with urban wild life.
Will definitely be back. Often.
