In-Shape: Salinas West

Love this gym! Well equipped with a great floor plan and layout. Staff are friendly and professional. I like the long hours, the only downside is they have oversold it. Gets ridiculously crowded at times especially during peak hours. Also, the staff do not clean the restrooms as much as they should. If these problems were to be addressed it would be 5 stars in my book!

I’ve been going to InShape West for 4+ years. My health and fitness in these past years has changed tremendously. While working with my personal trainer, Banessa, I have been able to reach many health milestones. I still have a long way to go but I have built a very solid foundation with the help of Banessa and the ease and accessibility of a wonderful gym.
Banessa has a very caring approach to her training. She takes into consideration your current physical situation and always asks what ailments or pains you have before starting your session. She pushes hard but it always is because she knows you can do more (which as much as I sometimes don’t want to admit, I know I can do more as well). I am very proud of my accomplishments and very thankful for InShape and Banessa.
I have lost almost a total of 50 pounds and I am continuing to create new goals and new milestones to reach.
Only within the past year have I joined the Spin community. It has been an amazing experience. InShape has great instructors who make class an enjoyable and believe it or not, FUN experience. It takes a good music playlist and an exciting instructor for me to get through the hour long sweat session and the instructors do not disappoint! Kudos to Sara, Derek, Theresa & Jackie. All very different in their teaching approach but very effective in kicking your butt! And getting to meet new friends along the way is a definite plus.
InShape is a great gym! I definitely recommend it!
2016 is going to be good!

I’m not much of a gym connoisseur but I think In Shape Salinas West is great gym, with super friendly and helpful staff. Clean. Pool and sauna. 5 stars for my personal trainer MICHELLE MCNALLY. She’s awesome. Great mixture of professional and fun.

I’m only in the area for about 4 months and it was nice to know that they have month to month plans. I signed up and they scheduled for me to meet with a trainer for free the next day. I was able to meet with Susie twice after I signed up for a membership. It was nice to know that someone understands my schedule and someone who I can easily trust. I really enjoyed working out with her. She motivated me when I was about to give up on myself.

I love in shape. I am not much of a gym person but the staff at In-​Shape is amazing! They are friendly and treat you like family. The gym is currently going through expansion! They are adding more weight rooms, locker rooms and a racket ball court! They have a pool, two cardio theaters, and a butt load of machines and weights! The machines are a little close but no one judges stares and laughs which is why I left my pervious gym. I love this place! It’s adorable ! I pay $ 34.00 a month to be able to go to this gym and ANY in shape in Cali ! Thank you in shape!

When I first moved here, I was in search of a gym to occupy my time. I looked here before it was renovated and was completely turned off by the enrollment fee that I had to pay, and no hospital employee discount… so I went to Gold’s. After being at Gold’s for 2 years or so, I made the switch after In-​Shape was renovated and offered different classes more to my work out style. Additionally, they finally offered a NMC discount. I’m so glad I made the switch. I no longer have to stare at cobb webs on the ceiling and can breathe without inhaling any dust. I love doing the classes — body pump and RIPPED. These classes are what you make of it, you push yourself and only you can determine your results. I started out doing only 5 lbs on each side of my bar, and now I’m at 17.5lbs for squats. You see results if you push yourself. I love the instructors, esp Derek, Sandy, Jennifer (RIPPED), Arya. THe other instructors teach during the day, so I can’t attest to their classes. The body pump classes do get packed, so come early to set yourself up!

My wife & daughter like this place and go often. The price could be better. And the parking lot needs cameras.

I think I enjoyed this gym when is was smaller. Hard to work out, most of their machines don’t work and always so crowded.

Pretty good facility if you go before 6am. This is the best to go for me so it works. I went once (and will not again) at about 4pm and it is just so crowded it’s pretty bad. Also, kids in the pool area do not respect the adults only thing in the lap lanes and they are just incredibly loud. This is supposed to be a fitness club not a pool party for misbehaved kids. Not the clubs fault but it is what it is.
Kind of disappointed in their schedule for classes. I would love to do yoga sometime but they Only have classes late morning or midday. I wish they would be more cognizant of people who work during the day and change the schedule up for early morning, evening or weekends.
On a good note, lots of cardio equipment and I love all of the weight machines. You can really get a full body workout and get results with what they have. The staff are really friendly and the woman at the front counter actually learned my name and is very cheerful, it’s nice and refreshing to know your not just a number. Wish I remembered her name because she deserves recognition. She is a young Hispanic girl who is there weekdays around 6am.
Overall I like the club but there are just a few annoyances.

Good business. All of their clubs are clean and well run. They are courteous and it’s nice to be a member with In Shape. They are constantly cleaning floors and locker room. Well maintained. The equipment is clean too. Clean floors always

I am not so happy with the instructors at inshape. They had good jumba instructors a year ago and now… they are replaced with novice instructors.

So I must re-​post ! The Manager there reach out to me. I am very impress! How they called me let me know they want to help. I believe in second chances so I am willing to go back and start fresh. The staff there Mark Ryan and Amy! Are so understanding and very polite. As a consumer I was very impress. On another note Susie is very informant, and did go above and beyond in showing me all the commendations. There at In shape they do care about customers.

After initially writing my first review on this gym, I was contacted by the head manager Hector, whom I appreciate reaching out to me and helping me sort out some of the issues I had with this gym.
We discussed the busy peak hours, the gym equipment and my main issue being disturbed inappropriately by one of the employees at this gym.
I do understand that gyms can be quite busy especially during the peak hours and Hector did ensure me that InShape is working on improving this gym so that everyone can have a better experience.
I may have been a little harsh on my first review as I was upset over the disturbance of my training. I would like to included that the manager did have a concern over damage barbells as previous gym members had done some damage to them by dropping them inappropriately. In my case I was not damaging the barbells but they did make noises as they would since there is no real platform to deadlift at to cushion the sound.
The gym has recently replaced/​added 6 new barbells which everyone seems to be enjoying. I’m sure this is only the beginning to improving this gym therefore this has cause my opinion/​review to shift to a more positive one.
Overall I would say that since speaking with the manager I have had a better experience. I can finish my training in a reasonable amount of time. They have everything I need to complete my workout and I haven’t had any issues with anyone disturbing my training.
Thanks Hector for taking the time to address all my concerns, I think I will stick around after all ;-).

I’m not crazy about this gym for the most part staff is good friendly the petite girl in the front was always pleasant. I was never able to figure out how to use the equipment unlike the gym on Davis I couldn’t figure out the machines. What really drove me crazy though is all the ridiculous charges on my boyfriends card. They charged his card for our membership and then would say we owed the month we had bank statements to back us up but they couldn’t tell us where our money was going. The staff tried taking off some of the charges and giving us credit yet our card continued to be charged it was very frustrating they gave us a number to call but we were never able to get anyone on the line.

I’ve had been a member of this gym for over 3 yrs. I’ve enjoyed there classes and equipment when it first opened.
Once the gym started throwing monthly specials, it became very packed at any given hour and with my work schedule I could never attend classes unless it the 5am ones ;)
The front staff is very nice, the personal trainers not so nice. I did like Dreck that teaches the 5am Spin Class, he is very motivating.
The equipment is in top shape and very clean locker room with showers.
They also have a dry/​wet sauna/​and a pool, not many people take advantage of this.
The pricing is a little more then other gyms in the community, but for working, newer equipment it’s well worth it.
I would like more classes around lunch time till 4pm, it would be awesome if they had classes all day!

If you want a workout or a gym with:
Fairly new and we’ll maintained gym equipment. To boot the locker room is always pretty clean.
A decent amount of cardiovascular machines as well as types
High quality Wifi
Then this place can’t be beat.
Other amenities I’ve seen but not participated:
Spinning Bikes in separate room
Large room air conditioned room for various classes
Lockers are well kept
Showers — IMO gross to use any gym shower
Sauna & lap pool
Other than that the only downer is gym etiquette by some of the other members such as re-​racking, slamming weights but then again there are always those people at any gym. However, staff should at least try to call people out as its not a personal gym.
With that said the staff is what you would expect from this type of gym (Not high end) and none in Salinas.
The Sales/​Membership team is just like any other in any gym nationwide.
Personal Trainers: Typical to most gyms with multiple locations they are personable and do a decent job of walking you through a workout. However, not the most encouraging or motivating group. Can’t blame them as they are only doing what they know and have been taught.
If you are looking for a hard core, serious personal trainer there is a guy down the street that can deliver.

I have been a member or this gym since March 2014.
I love the staff at this club. Everyone is friendly and greets you with a smile. Some will even strike up a conversation.
One of my favorite staff members is Adrian G. He greets me with a smile every single day and makes an effort to make me feel welcome. He makes a real effort everytime to ask how I’m doing and even asks me about things we’ve talked about before. I really feel that he cares.
I do personal training with Rebecca Roberts twice a week. I always look forward to my sessions with her. When I walk up, she asks about my day and my energy level so she can decide on my workout. She pushes me every single time but also makes sure the workout is tailored to my needs. I always leave feeling like I really accomplished something positive for my body. She is also hilarious!
Manuel is a great guy! He is the first person at his club I met and has invested interest in my health and wellbeing every time I see him. He always makes an effort to say hi and pay a positive comment on my fitness.
I feel like every staff member I’ve met here really care about me. Even those that I haven’t actually had the pleasure of working with. Keep it up, guys!
On top of the amazing staff, the gym is always clean and sanitary. It gets crowded at normal times but you can always find a machine or equipment to tide you over until the one you want frees up.
Overall, I love this gym.

Poor, Poor, wait… HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE BY THE FRONT DESK CLERK, and he goes by the name of ADRIAN. ADRIAN is the first person you see when you walk into that Gym… No Hello, No «how are you doing today?» or «Have a great workout» or when you leave «Have a nice day» YOU KNOW, BASIC CUSTOMER SERVICE… HE LOVES THAT INTERCOM, AND I’M GUESSING HE IS THE SELF-​PROCLAIMED «IN-​SHAPE SECURITY.» HE NEEDS TO BE WORKING IN THE BACK SOMEWHERE!!! What an unprofessional… HE KNOWS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ABOUT CUSTOMER SERVICE, OR HE JUST PROFILES THE CLIENTS AND PICKS AND CHOOSES WHO HE SAYS HELLO TO (MORE ON THAT FURTHER DOWN).Here’s what happened: I am a below-​knee amputee, I come into the gym with my 8-​year-​old son, hand him my bar code, no eye contact, no «hello» as usual… I’ve never brought my son into the gym, so as I walk past the front desk, he asks (not even looking in my direction) if I wanted to add my son to my account. I ask him, what do you mean? and how does it work (because I’m thinking I can send my son into the children’s area, or he can wait in the lobby (which is nice by the way, and looks like a hotel lounge)…his answer was short, cut and dry, leaving me to continue asking more questions. He tells me the children’s section doesn’t open until 4pm, which is in another 20 minutes. I tell him that it’s okay, my son can hangout in the front lobby and do his homework while I grab a quick workout. I was not going to let my son wait in my truck while I work out. Let’s not forget the old 24 hour fitness/​CrossFit Gyms and I’m sure other gyms allow their kids to hang out while mom or dad gets a quick workout (if they are well behaved). Since this was my first time, Mr. ADRIAN provides me with no option, I have to leave… his response was we don’t allow children to sit and wait unsupervised while in the lobby. Okay, I can respect that… but how about «let me ask my supervisor to see if it’s okay» or «we’ll let you do it this time, but next time…» You get my point… I respect that I can’t be there at this point, BUT HERE’S WHERE I REALLY GET PISSED… my son needs to use the restroom… I tell ADRIAN that I’m taking my son to the restroom, and ADRIAN PROCEEDS TO TELL ME THAT MY 8-​YEAR-​OLD CANNOT USE THE RESTROOM. By this time, stopped listening to this FOOL! I take my son to go use the restroom. This cowardly snitch ADRIAN gets on his handy intercom and pages, «HECTOR CAN YOU PLEASE CALL THE FRONT DESK [TWICE]»…it takes me less than 5 minutes to return to the front with my son, and I see Manager HECTOR, bounce up from his chair and out his cubby/​workstation and begin walking towards me. I continue walking towards the front door, Hector paused and stopped, but never makes contact with me see what ADRIAN’S CODE 3 was all about! HECTOR THEN TURNS AROUND AND WALKS TOWARDS THE BACK OF THE GYM (HECTOR CALLS ME LATER THAT EVENING AND I TOLD HIM HE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK TO ME BUT WALKED AWAY, HE DIDNT THINK I NOTICED)…So before I left, I MADE SURE THAT I LET ADRIAN KNOW WHAT I THOUGHT… IF ADRIAN HAD NO PROBLEM USING HIS LAME INTERCOM, WELL, I USED MINE BEFORE I LEFT… HECTOR YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPUTATION OF THIS GYM, and it STARTS AND ENDS WITH ADRIAN, he is the first person you see in the gym, and the last person you see when you’ve concluded your workout. ADRIAN BEHAVED AS THOUGH I TRIED TO BREACH THE WHITE HOUSE! What was I going to do by taking my son to the bathroom? VANDALIZE, or COMPROMISE THE GYM IN SOME WAY?
I spoke with the sales rep ERIC, who is, by the way a SOLID GUY… he has maintained his rapport with me, even after he signed me up… cool dude, as are other staff members, I’m sure… but ERIC respected my point of view, and reacted professionally.
To his credit, HECTOR did make an effort by contacting me in the evening, and did offer me a generous free membership service for an extended period. Here’s my thing, I don’t want an apology, and «free» service… I’ll do my part, and contribute by being a good customer, picking up after myself, cleaning my area in the gym, and respect the gyms policies… but I EXPECT TO BE TREATED FAIRLY AND IMPARTIALLY… HECTOR, you need to train ADRIAN, or find another place for him, or if all else fails, get rid of him.
ON A SIDE NOTE: Initially, when I first started going to the gym, I would say hello to ADRIAN, or say «what’s up?»…but he did not reciprocate. Usually, before I leave the gym, I would sit in the front lobby and remove my prosthetic leg (growing pains), and would noticed ON SEVERAL DIFFERENT OCCASIONS that ADRIAN LOVES to give his attention to attractive women immediately when they walk into the gym, and even has «conversation» with them. I HAVE NO RESPECT FOR THIS TOOL! I JUST SHAKE MY HEAD AND WONDER WHY HE’S WORKING THE FRONT DESK… and because of this guy, I want no part of In-​Shape Salinas on Davis Rd. which is right next to K-​Mart. At this point, I would get better customer service there.

I’ve been coming here for a year now. Staff is very friendly. The gym is constantly being cleaned. I have always had good experiences here. I especially like the classes.

If I could give negative stars — I would. Read the other reviews about the customer service, or lack thereof — that will be your experience as well should you choose to join this club.
I will admit — I am not a member, but my mom is. As her caregiver, I accompany her to the facility to use the pool, as it is the only aspect of the gym she can use. Well, what do you know — it’s summer — and I have my 2 children who accompany us to the gym as well.
Yet, one summer day I as I was entering the gym, I was told that I had to fill out a waiver of liability to escort my mom into the pool. You know, assist her out of her wheelchair, help her in the pool… and then go sit in the lobby while she swims. Not only was I required to fill out this form — which we all know is a SALES form — each time we go in, but if I didn’t give my children’s names and ages on the form, they couldn’t even enter the lobby. What? I don’t want some random sales guy to call and have my minor children’s information — It simply isn’t necessary.
Yet — evidently it is necessary at In Shape Health Clubs — even though I pointed out that their own privacy policy prohibits collecting personal information of minors under the age of 13. We were told by 2 employees — Adrian and Elizabeth — that unless I gave my children’s names and ages (attached to my personal information such as home phone) — none of us could enter the club. That was not how to make someone feel welcome at the club — I’ll tell you that!
So, my mom can’t go in and swim unassisted and I am not going to leave my 2 minor children out on the sidewalk or in a hot car (which I guess is what In Shape thinks would be a better choice). I was told that if my mom wanted to cancel, I could call customer service and talk to someone there. Well — customer service at corporate throws it back to the club manager — Hector. I haven’t heard from him — I have to wait 48 hours — but I imagine that I’ll be told that this is their policy… since obviously I am hard of hearing the first time I was told.
Trying to assist a handicapped person who wants to exercise is all I was trying to do — I would imagine that In Shape would agree that this is a worthy goal. So, why on earth are they trying to make it so hard to do so? Why would they deliberately hide behind «policy» rather than assist their paying club member? I guess I’ll never know — because we won’t be back.
