Ziggy’s is a family run business that enables you to go back in time and remember the way donuts used to be. We still hand cut each donut and keep it simple to keep the prices down. We offer turnovers made from homemade pie crust, muffins that are scrumptious, not to mention that every Wednesday is Whoopie Pie Wednesday and ours are said to be the best ever! GIve us a try, you won’t be disappointed.

History

Established in 1964.

Ziggy was the founder of Ziggy’s Donuts and worked hard with his wife Alice until his passing in 1983. Through the years of Ziggy’s failing health, he changed the name to Ziggy and Sons’ Donuts as each son became a baker in his family business. Alice and daughters waited the counter to help out. Bobby, Ricky, Debbie and Carol have moved on, but son John and daughter Patricia keep the business running with their Mom Alice right beside them.

I began my early morning journey in Peabody but my patience wore thin after sitting in the Ziggy’s parking lot until 7:10 and realized they don’t keep strict hours (how do they prep?). So I made my way to Salem.
The choices were limited but I chose the honey dipped, chocolate honey dipped, pumpkin, plain and jelly which was basically the extent of their variety. The honey dipped was by far and away the best. Airy and delicate — maybe the best of that kind I’ve had. However, the others had a crispy outside which is great but not thick enough to render a fluffy inside. In other words the whole donut was crispy. Too much filling in the jelly donut for my liking. It’s a nice neighborhood donut shop and I hope they remain in business for another 50 years but if you’re not from the neighborhood it’s not worth traveling. And as for the Peabody location is it too much to ask that you open on time?

Its hard to decide between here and Coffee Time but I just loved the feel of this place. I’ll settle this, go to Coffee time for Bizmarks and come here for donuts. And don’t go to Dunks ever again for donuts. There were more than just donuts. I got a pastry. But it will be a nostalgic trip for some people! Not really easy to park here but its worth it. So many varieties if you get there early enough and the people are warm and friendly!

Fresh, yummy, crisp, light, fluffy, decadent. Friendly owners & quick service call for a great trip for donuts. Its on a quiet little corner in Salem & you can tell that the locals love it here. I would suggest going early (before 10am) to get the best selection. But honestly, anything you get it wont be disappointing.

A neighborhood, old school institution, harking back to a bygone era. The donuts are superior. The coffee is what’s to be expected at a place like this – not great but OK and super cheap. The selection is limited, but this it NOT a problem. Everything they have for donuts and treats is perfect, freshly made, and delicious. When you go in, it’s like being in grandma’s cluttered kitchen, complete with pics of the grandkids on the refrigerator with magnets. There’s even a Jesus on the fridge! Hey Nonna! There are about 6 stools at the coffee counter so if you were thinking of going in there with your laptop and balancing your books, think again. This is mostly a take out place. Sometimes the locals are sitting at the counter, though, chatting with the long time owner/​operators.

First time visited, they had ether sold out and closed or were only open in the Peabody location… That was a little irritating, but today that was forgiven and forgotten as the chocolate frosted melted in my mouth. The lemon filled very good too. Chocolate glazed was a little dry though. Will return for sure… :)

I opened a shop on Pickering Wharf and saw killer reviews for Ziggy’s. Unilocal did NOT steer me wrong on this one. During our 1st week, I made it a point to head into town early to grab our renovation crew some breakfast. After getting a run-​down of what they had for the day, I decided that EVERYTHING sounded awesome and asked them to «surprise me with ½dozen of whatever is good». Everything was a HUGE hit with my crew– best donuts I’ve ever had the pleasure of stuffing into my facemouth. I thought I didn’t like donuts… turns out I just don’t like gross donuts. These were AMAZING. A+ Would nom again.

Ziggy’s donuts are made from scratch and hand cut. These donuts are the real deal !!! Not only do they have donuts but they sell muffins and pastry. I wouldn’t think of getting donuts any place else. They also just opened a new one on Lowell Street in Peabody. Same baker, same quality !!!

Old school is right– in all the best ways.** see experience below. A friend who has spent over 30 years living in Salem without any hesitation says Ziggy’s is THE place for donut. I don;t live near enough to make this a regular spot but was able to stop by on Sunday and grab a few items.
I asked the sweet getnlement what the best sellers were and he noted Jelly was #1. (Sorry, jelly isn’t mine) Next he said a chocolat honey-​dipped– works for me. I also had to try the traditional honey-​dipped. I spied a yeasty reaised cinammon roll (with raising she noted) and took that for work the next day.
These are the kind of places we are losing if we don’t continue to support them with our business. I overheard the woman (likely the co-​owner) calling regulars because she had bismarks that day… who does that personalized service for what is likely a $ 2 – 4 sale? Loved hearing this!

Warning: You have to get here early (like… really early, like… by 9am) to obtain donuts because they can sell out quick-​style depending on the morning. I live down the street and have to run by this shop on my morning jog and let me tell you, it’s super inconvenient because it makes me want donuts — they smell amazing while they’re frying ‘em up between 6/​7am.
On the days that I talk myself into swinging in, I grab the cinnamon sugar, chocolate and plain donuts because they’re my favorites — they freeze well, FYI. They have iced coffee for a dollar and change.

I have been going to Ziggy’s with a friend nearly every Sunday for over 20 years. It’s a tiny family-​owned place with wonderful people, great donuts and excellent coffee. We walk in, sit down and they always remember how we like our coffee. I feel like a member of the family. It’s always a highlight of my week to visit Ziggy’s on Sunday. If you are a fan of small quirky donut shops, it is worth a trip to Ziggy’s.

Hole in the wall local donut shop. I love these types of neighborhood gems. Nice people, good coffee, and great donuts. I walked through the historic neighborhood between the Hawthorne Hotel and Ziggy’s. What a great way to start a Sunday morning!

My weakness is donuts!
This place is the best because it is within walking distance from my bf’s apt. If you are going to eat donuts than you should at least burn some calories by walking. I can’t believe it has been there for years and I just now discovered them.
This place is so authentically old school. They even sell cigarettes here! The donuts are exactly what you would expect from an independent shop– large variety, fresh, classic flavors and toppings, delicious, cheap.
I highly recommend the apple donut and the coconut (which comes in white AND toasted)! This is going to be a new regular spot for me :)

Totally worth the calories! I stopped in here on a random Tuesday for a birthday treat. The place was empty and it looked like most of the donuts had been picked over (it was 8:30 a.m.) Luckily there were enough for me. I tried the jelly donut with powdered sugar crystals and crack (Not 100% sure). But wow. Those little guys were DELISH. I also had a GIANT chocolate frosted donut that was thick and crunchy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside. I was in a sugar coma the rest of the day but TOTALLY worth it. If you live in the area or are visiting you must stop here for some sugary goodness.

Stopped by Ziggy’s (finally) on Friday morning at 7am. There was only one other person at the counter so I was glad to beat the morning rush. The woman behind the counter was friendly and created a wonderful assortment of donuts for me. I had a coffee as well which is just your typical diner coffee (I’ll skip the sugar next time — too sweet. Especially with donuts).
They had turnovers and whoopie pies too. I’ll have to go back. A dozen donuts was $ 7.50. I couldn’t resist eating one while they were still warm and so soft! I’m pretty sure this place is cash only.
