Firstly, my expectations of Asian food in Saint Louis are different that those of Asian food in places like California or New York, so read my reviews how you like. As someone who comes from an area that had all types of Asian food available basically any time of day, Wei Hong is a solid contender for Cantonese food in St Louis. They have their dim sum on the weekends which is quite standard but does fill the craving. Their regular menu items are pretty standard as well in terms of Cantonese dishes but they also have some great Chinese BBQ dishes. But what I really like about this place is that they have some of their dim sum items for sale everyday. These would be the BBQ pork buns, sesame balls, and a bunch of other items at the front of the store. So it is very easily to buy these for a quick to-go. This is a good place if you know what Cantonese food is and need a fix.

I normally get the chicken and salty fish fried rice and it is excellent. But today I decided to try something different and I got the bbq pork and the roast duck and chicken and pineapple fried rice. The chicken and pineapple fried rice was not as good as the chicken salty fish fried rice but the barbecue pork was excellent. I was very disappointed in the dark because I thought the skin was going to be crispy and it was really soggy. Maybe I will try the duck again but I’m definitely going back to my usual for a while.

We wanted Asian duck and were in the area, so we stopped in. Wow. The reviews from my fellow Unilocalers were spot on! The duck was amazing. We also had the pork and chicken– both amazing as well. The steamed shrimp dumplings were very tasty and for me– the general tso chicken took the cake! I have never tasted a general tso similar. This one is full of flavor. The initial taste is a bit sweet with a little tang. The after taste is smooth and spicy. Perfect dish! We did not try anything from the bakery, but it all looked good. We will be back very soon.

I’m updating, and slightly upgrading, my review because I’m now starting to understand this place. It’s not fair for me to rate it as a pure Americanized Chinese food play because that’s really not what they are or possibly even care to be. I’d probably hit them with a 1 out of 5 star review if I were comparing them to this brand of Chinese I crave every Sunday evening. They’re a bakery and roastery, specifically duck and pork. That’s what your expectations should be set to, and almost literally nothing more. But I upgraded my review because there is in fact an order to be had if you tread carefully. From the menu, go ahead and order potstickers, the roast duck and chicken lomein… and stop there! I see you looking around, I said stop! Now walk over to the counter, treat yo’self to a few orders of the pork buns, let’s go with as many as you can carry, and pick up a pack or two of the pork dumpling dim sum things to round out the spread. That compilation is the first time in 4 years of trying to make it work with this place, where at least half of our collective family order was willingly consumed. For that order, I’d send someone their way, because those items are tasty.

I love Chinese and have had it around the nation. This is by far my favorite Chinese in Saint Louis to date. The beef and Ox tripel in chili sauce was amazing and especially spicy. The General Tso’s was nothing short of perfect. Succulent chicken with a crisp texture and the sauce was thick with good sweetness, heat, and a decadent blast of umami. I love the place.

I’ve eaten in the restaurant once and we swore we’d never go back. Upon returning for a pastry, I remembered why. A big bug smashed into the side of it. So that means bugs are in the pastry case. Eat at own risk.

Okay, so I’m back for a very long and overdue update. So I learned my lesson, just never expect good food if you’re ordering«American Chinese.» I’ve been back here countless times to eat in and for carry out. Their traditional dishes are phenomenal. Seriously some of the best Chinese food I’ve had in St. Louis. I went with a friend who ordered entirely off the menu for us and I was blown away. I wish I could recall what each dish was… I tried their shrimp Lo Mein last week and it was seriously the best Lo Mein I’ve ever. had. I couldn’t put my finger on what made it so good… I shamefully consumed the entire serving. What truly sets Wei Hong apart is their BBQ and Bakery. I recommend any dish that incorporates their freshly BBQ’d duck or pork. Their crispy pork is as savory and flavorful as you can possibly imagine. Also, don’t forget to leave without trying their baked goods. I’ve pretty much sampled everything but before you leave you need to snag a handful of BBQ pork buns. They’ll change your life. They’re only $ 2 each and you can have like 2 for lunch and be full. One of these days I’ll have to grab some BBQ to go!

I LOVE Wei Hong. I usually get the bbq pork fried rice, and my husband typically orders lo mein, both of which are good. They have huge portions, and the prices are super reasonable. They also have WONDERFUL sesame balls with the red bean paste, which is something I’ll treat myself to every once in a while after a trip to Jay’s, which is across the street.

I’ve been having a terrible time in St Louis finding a decent Chinese place that is within delivery or easy take out range of our house. This time I tried Wei Hong. I told my partner it can’t be any worse than the other mediocre places we have been going. I was wrong. The take out service was fast for a Sat night. We were there within 20 minutes of ordering and it was ready. But the dining room was empty. For a Sat night that should have been a big clue. The rest of the places in the neighborhood were busy. The steamed dumplings could have been great. The tasted homemade and the filling was good. However, they were so doughy with a really thick wrapper too thick that it detracted from the good filling. Everything else went downhill from there. The beef and broccoli was inedible. The beef had an awful weird texture. Like it was boiled and was gelatinous. The sauce on it had off flavors. We literally scraped it off our plates and threw the whole thing out. The meat in both the general Tao’s chicken and the orange beef also had weird textures. It was mushy and the coating was thick on those as well. The flavors in the sauces would have been fine, but they were gloopy. The fried rice was fair but nothing memorable. We won’t be going back.

Have visited twice lately and have had the following dishes: Black Pepper Chicken, Orange Chicken, Kung Pao Chicken, and Salt and Pepper Shrimp. All very yummy and on the spicy side(which we, as a family, like). Egg Rolls, Pot Stickers and Hot and Sour soup were also yummy. We also took Red Bean Sesame Balls and BBQ Pork Bun from the bakery home. All the items are yummy. I would recommend this place if you are in the area. Service is Chinese… and that’s that! We had a large group of 34 attend. Everyone eventually received the dishes they ordered… but the dishes were delivered to the tables based on items ordered, not by family groups who ordered together. I. E… all the Cashew Chicken dishes were delivered first, followed by other chicken dishes, then noodles, beef… and finally seafood. Each individual had to ask for chopsticks instead of just supplying chopsticks to everyone(though they use real chopsticks instead of the wooden throw away kind). And instead of just keep the water glasses full, they only filled those who asked. But they did do a good job of getting the food which was ordered for the younger kids(noodles and rice) out quickly! Décor is OK and if you visit during the day, you’ll see young children of the owners/workers there playing(which I’m OK with).

Best Chinese in the city! Never had a bad dish; everything is so flavorful but not greasy. All their bakery goods are delicious as well!

I have been going to Weii Hong for 4 years. I’m Chinese and have traveled to China on multiple occasions and generally have eaten most different styles of Chinese food. Wei Hong is located in a great spot on South grand and a very internaltional neigborhood. It does not have outdoor seating although most restaurants surrounding it does. Food(most important to me) — First the bakery goods are all very medicore. I think I have only ordered them when I was waiting for a delivery item. If you want to have a real Chinese dinner at a reasonable price this is the place to do it and follow my instructions exactly — 1. Get 3 – 4 friends that are open minded and willing to eat familry style 2. Order anything salt and pepper(tofu, pork, calamari) If you have to choose do it in that order respectivelry 3. Vegetable dish.(chinese broccli, eggplant, mixed vegetables) 4. Try the bbq sampler(not a necessity but if your table is hungry and likes meat I would try it) 4. DONOT expect great service. I think when you have been around Chinese restaurants and especially in CHina you’ll find the customers yelling at the staff and it’s almost sounds like an arguement or someone is angry. But, I think it’s a large cultural difference. This is a Cantonse restaurant so I completely understand when people dislike the service. Overall, in this particular region of the Midwest and this part of st louis — Wei Hong is probably the closest to real chinese food you’ll get.

My husband and I came here this weekend and decided to be a little adventurous in our food choices. It turned out that we should have stuck with what we know and love. For that reason, I’m going to pass on reviewing the food here. I will say that my stomach didn’t digest the food well and that’s never been a problem before but again, that could be choosing an atypical dish. It’s just never a good feeling when you question if you got the meat you ordered and can’t verify by look or taste. What I will review was the service. It took over 5 people waiting for anyone to seat us. We never got the drinks we ordered. We ordered spicier dishes and never got any water refills. While there was a larger party there, we were clearly being ignored in favor of regulars. There’s too many other good places nearby for me to want to try again here with the service. The dim sum menu looked like it might be a better choice if I do feel like going back but I’m just not convinced it’s worth it.

In all fairness to Wei Hong my wife and I have ordered take out here numerous times during the past two years without any issues. The portions are always ample and the food is usually very good. That said we ordered take out on Saturday, 21 Feb and within five hours both my wife and I became very sick. I was so sick I had to go to the ER and was kept for several hours due to severe dehydration as a result of the sickness(I’ll spare any readers the details). We called Wei Hong yesterday to inform them about this and received a less than contrite response. Needless to say I will not give this place any more of my money. I would urge anyone to exercise caution eating here.

This is a very consistent, high-quality restaurant with truly authentic food! I have eaten here many times, and each dish has been hot, full of flavor, and beautiful portions! On my last visit, we did dim sum, which is available all day Saturday and Sunday! You order from the menu and every dish that we had was truly scrumptious!!! There was a great assortment, to include in addition to traditional dishes, things like chicken feet, tripe, and other unique options and each was beautifully presented. Our service has always been very good and the waitress has always returned to see if we are enjoying or need anything. The bakery has delectable options and they also offer whole ducks and other meats to go… One of the very best Chinese restaurants with a very consistent, high quality presentation, and great customer service!

Stopped by the bakery the other day, since I was craving haam sui gok(deep-fried pork dumplings/croquettes) and needed to make a trip to Jay International across the street anyway. Were this bakery over on the East Coast, I would probably give it a weak three stars, but here I am in St. Louis, where I have learned to set the bar low for Asian food, lest I want to guarantee disappointment. Anyway, some(+) points: The bakery items are inexpensive. Haam sui gok for $ 0.90 a pop, char siu bao for $ 1, a tray of 4 siu mai for $ 2, a ham & cheese bun for $ 1… I was in and out with a greasy paper bag of goodies in just two minutes. And I mean greasy in the best way possible. (-) points: Just that these items weren’t the best-tasting of their kind that I’ve had, but again, I’ll take what I can get in STL. So 4 stars for being cheap, fast, and convenient. [Edit:] Been back a couple of times and the dimsum to go was not as good as I remembered, which wasn’t even all that good to begin with. Prices went up a bit too. Gonna have to bump this rating down a notch.

A coworker of mine was picking up take-out from Wei Hong the other day, so I decided to tag on to the order. My first impression of this place was how affordable their prices are… I mean where else can you find a bowl of noodle soup for $ 5.50? Since this was in the middle of the polar vortex St. Louis had a few weeks back, soup sounded warm & delicious. Wei Hong seemed to be known for their«hanging ducks» so I decided on roast duck soup with fun noodles and dumplings. The duck was fairly tender but overall the soup was lacking copious amount of flavor. The dumplings had a decent amount of flavor, but everything else was very, very bland. It didn’t have one trace of salt or any other spices. In addition to my soup, I tasted an eggplant dish that was a little better than my choice but still fairly bland. I am willing to give Wei Hong one more chance in the future, but if my next meal is as bland as my last one… I won’t be back!

Every once in a blue moon I will get a craving for Chinese food only to be disappointed & regret my decision. Before eating here tonight, I had high hopes after seeing the 4 star avg Unilocal reviews, but post meal, my stomach was unsatisfied & I left again regretful wishing I’d gone to one of the other ethnic restaurants on the block(king & I thai anyone?). 1st thing, crab Rangoon… tasteless, even the sweet & sour sauce sucked. Egg rolls weren’t too bad, but when I have to dip it in crappy s&s sauce… I ordered #141: beef in black pepper sauce. I couldn’t get past the soggy texture of the«beef». It’s not a good feeling when you question the meat. You start thinking, «what the hell did I just ingest!?!» The bf ordered general tso’s chicken which was much better than my sad meal that looked untouched. He polished his meal off w/my help. Hate to give this place a low rating. It seems like a cute, family run restaurant, but the food is… questionable.

I rarely do this. Do not go to Wei Hong. They have gone downhill and are now a mess. There was four people in the entire restaurant at 8:15pm on a Friday night. Both adjacent restaurants for packed(for some perspective). Had not been here for a few years but remembered it fondly and was excited to try it out again. Egg Rolls: Fine. Generic. Overpriced. BBQ Trio: Duck was ok I guess. There was a short, jet-black hair right in the middle of the pile of meat. Wow. Disgusting. And the pork was so bad I had to spit it out and wash the taste out of my mouth. Something was off there. Pork and Egg Fried Rice: Inexpensive and good. The only thing that seemed worth it but we were pretty grossed out after finding the hair. Salt and Pepper Seafood Combo: Chewy, salty, gross. We ended up throwing away nearly all of it and it was $ 13 or so. So disappointed. The shrimp was decent, the squid was disgusting, as was the fish or whatever else was in there. Baked Goods: Hardly had anything. Lotus Ball was alright. Bean Ball was nothing special. Melon cake thing was bland and tasted a bit like coconuts. This meal cost us $ 38.00. It was terrible. The rice was the only thing we truly enjoyed, and it was $ 6.50. We threw away most of our meal it was so bad. And there was a hair. Sorry Wei Hong — if you don’t get it together you are clearly going to be out of business soon. What a shame.
