The Kitchen Sink

Saturday June 25^th, a hot summer day this restaurant had NO air conditioning in the dining room. I repeat, NO AC. We were sweating the entire time. Want to cool down with a nice refreshing adult drink .NOPE NO LIQUOR LICENSE .with a fully stocked bar right in center of dining room, it was torture. Food was ok menu is a little confusing you must read EVERY ingredient. We had to ask for napkins, water refills and for her to clear empty dishes from table. Rude and confused hostess

Excellent choice for a brunch/​lunch type of place. Location is great and building has a very cool set up. New Orleans style food with a great selection of drinks. The Sangria was great. No complaints on the food everything was very delicious. Our server, Warren, was very knowledgeable and did a fantastic job. Will be back!

Listen, this place was absolutely horrible. I could not stand the gps to begin with. Then I finally encountered a hostess. Who was the hostess for the mostress of being the most rude. I was very offended by everyone but my waitress. DO NOT HAVE THE COFFEE. IT IS TERRIBLE. They will argue that it is suppose to taste atrocious and you will be on defense for paying for that disgusting coffee and unforgivable staff.

I am not a picky or hard to please diner.
In a nutshell:
* My pancakes tasted like sour milk. The other three people at my table tried them and almost gagged.
* Service was too slow to describe. It was not attentive and this was during lunch — there was one other table there when we arrived.
* All the food was dripping in grease. Very unappealing.
The «kitchen sink» meal looked like slop, and didn’t taste much better.
If you are considering this restaurant: go somewhere else!

I love the food but the service is awful. Has a soulful, southern flair. This place really has potential but it really needs to get better staff and take up the southern hospitality to go along with the food. It would be golden then!

The Kitchen Sink is one of my favorite restaurants in town! I’ve only been to this location twice and both times I received an excellent meal with excellent service. I also love the classic black iconic photographs throughout the restaurant. Both times I had the Four Horesmen which is a great option for anyone looking for a dish with all of the standard Cajun fare: shrimp etouffe, gumbo, jambalaya, and dirty rice. It NEVER disappoints! Never! I thought about trying The Kitchen Sink when I came here yesterday for lunch but stuck with what I knew. Their burgers are also creative and legendary. They have a full bar, pool table, and arcade games as well. When I came here yesterday, a diner who was seated close to me informed the waitress that it was her birthday and asked if they had any dessert. The waitress offered her a slice of cheesecake. After a short while, she brought it to their table and apologized saying that it was still frozen. By the looks of it, she added raspberry and chocolate sauce to the cake. The table didn’t mind and asked to take it home. While waiting (a short while) for the boxes, I heard them all say that it was really good as they sampled it anyway. The restaurant also played Stevie Wonder’s «Happy Birthday» song on the loud speakers after finding out that it was her birthday. That was nice. Although fresh cheesecake would have been nice, the waitress still did what she could to give her guests a good experience which I like. It’s that kind of treatment which makes me love a good local restaurant. Within 30 minutes I was seated, ordered, ate, and paid which I like.

Service this Sunday afternoon was sparse and slow. But good things came to those who waited. The burgers were down right amazing.
Also the Yellow Submarine (similar to a southwest egg roll) were really terrific.
Go get a burger and enjoy the perfection that is a toasted bun, excellent toppings and flavor that oozes from every corner of this masterpiece.

All I can really say is «meh». Went with a group that had made reservations for about 15 people. Stood around and waited for a table for 45 minutes after the reservation time. This restaurant is small though, so I’m not too terribly surprised about the wait. There were at least 5 menu items that the restaurant had sold out of by 8:30 to the chagrin of MANY of the people in our party.
The waitress was friendly and we did not have to wait long for drinks or food. Very timely and our receipts were accurate. I ordered the beer battered burger with the fries (they were out of chips) as well as a side of corn fritters. The portion was huge and pretty tasty, though very salty. The batter surrounding the burger and bacon was fluffy and slightly sweet, which really brought the burger together. Unfortunately the fries were the opposite of good. Super soggy and cold, the flavor was lost in a sea of disgusting texture. I should have swapped out for the corn fritters, which were incredible!
I’m not really sure what theme they are going with here, the plates were mismatched and confusing, the food is New Orleans and Tennessee, the shirts of the employees push the St. Louis community, and the dishwater is tex mex meets contemporary New York.
All in all, the burgers are definitely worth coming back for, just be prepared for a slight amount of confusion and/​or disappointment.

Mmmm mmmmmm. That’s probably an adequate review of this place, but I’ll provide a bit more insight. The Kitchen Sink was one of the only breakfast/​brunch places in St. Louis that wasn’t already super crowded or full of people with reservations on an early-​ish Sunday morning. We had already tried places in CWE to no avail… so we drove about five or ten minutes to this place, courtesy of a friend’s recommendation and Unilocal reviews.
The Kitchen Sink was practically empty. We were seated immediately. This place is pretty big so there’s no worries about where you’ll go. Menus prompt. Drink orders taken right away and served quickly. Full bar including Bloodys and Mimosas.
I ordered «The Sink» and was very happy with all of the eggs, biscuits and sausage gravy that came piled on my plate. All of my dining companions were happy with their selections, as well, including my father-​in-​law who has very discerning tastes (read: he likes what he likes). The bill was not too expensive and we were out of there in a little over an hour.
Parking is abundant on the street and I think there’s a side lot, but don’t quote me. Others have said this place is hidden in plain sight and it really is: it looks like it’s just part of an older apartment building but it’s a restaurant with an atrium, a full bar, and live jazz and classical music on Sundays. Awesome!

Food was great, beautiful restaurant !!! Service, other than the bartender, was the worst. One poor guy was getting carry out, he had called in they lost his order, he sat there for over an hour. No one offered him something to drink or anything. When I left he was still waiting. The servers had no idea what they was doing. I loved the food, not sure it’s worth risking the service!!!

Lacking in so many ways. Also, ordered a medium burger– Half of it was well the other half was rare. I’m not sure how you accomplish that.

We wanted to try a new breakfast venue and selected The Kitchen Sink. The service was incredibly slow, inaccurate, and nonchalant. Our breakfast sandwiches were pedestrian at best. We will never return to this establishment.

Fun place with a good creole taste. Nice assortment of dishes. I went with the «IDK» and the chef whipped up 2 grilled orange marmalade pork chops over rice etouffée and a big shrimp and andouille omelette.
It was big. It went down smooth. And I cleaned my plate.
Definitely going back to check out what he whips up next time. ;)

I give two stars because we didn’t get sick and die from the food. But the service was beyond slow (2 hours for lunch??), the food came out cold and incorrect, and the service came with attitude and without a sense of urgency.
I will not return.

The Kitchen Sink is definately worth the trouble to find. It is hidden in plain sight. Lol
The food was very good. The flavor profile was spot on and the portions are huge. The prices are also reasonable. We only finished half and was unable to take the rest because we were traveling. We ordered the 4 horsemen (which we should have split) and the Cajon chicken sandwich. Everything was tasty. We also ordered drinks and they were made well.
Fortunately we had a very sweet and personable young lady as our server, unfortunately I can’t remember her name. She was very helpful with the menu and always on the spot when we needed something. I would have given this review 5 stars except for the lighting. It is very dimly lit. We had to use the light on our cell phone to read the menu. Don’t let that dissuade you from visiting.

This was our second visit here, we had the same server. First time she was pretty decent, second time was awful. Never refilled drinks, forgot to ring in our nachos, was literally never there, ever. We met another couple there for lunch, ordered the Peter Pan and the nachos to start, then some random burgers, gumbo, and jambalaya. The food took FOR. EVER. And our server was never around. Plus they were out of half of the things we wanted because they were busy the night before. Not an excuse to me. However, the food is usually pretty good. Nothing to write home about but decent burgers and a large menu. We had our check on the table with credit card for almost 20 minutes and we didn’t see our server once. We finally decided to get some cash and leave it there, we didn’t even see her on the way out. Absolutely terrible service.

The food here is great! Huge portions but still great quality. The Kitchen Sink was unreal. So flavorful and a huge portion. I took home the leftover sauce and served it on top of asparagus that night. Everyone thought I was a fantastic cook :)
The caesar salad is also great. Really fresh and crisp. I got mine with blackened shrimp, yum! It’s not on the menu but they were accommodating and made it.
The reason I gave 4 out of 5 stars is because I was ‘blessed’ with the awkward/​slightly rude waiter that I’ve read about by other Unilocalers. If management cares about their restaurant’s continued success, you have to put this guy in a behind the scenes role. He was dry, but not funny. Acted like it was a hassle to get anything, from coffee refills to more water, I was actually hesitant to ask for these things because he was so inconvenienced by it! I’ve never felt like I had to tiptoe when dining out and paying for a meal, so this was awkward and disappointing. So if your waiter is a 40-​something year old guy with light brown hair and reminds you of the ‘Sadness’ character from ‘Inside Out’, then ask for a different waiter to save your experience! !!

Honestly, i wished they would hire some good waiters and waitresses.
I went on a Monday evening and they only had two servers. One of the servers was actually bar tendering too. So first we had to wait 30 mins to get a table which i guess is not that bad.
I had the mighty mo which was amazing. Corn fritters was a great compliment. My girlfriend had the four horsemen but they ran out of jambalaya. So disappointed.
I just hope they get the service situation together because i would hate to see this place go away based off of that. Four stars is being nice.

I had a giant salad and decent bloody mary for cheap – nothing to write home about until I tried the corn fritters. Get the corn fritters! I’ll try one of the Cajun entrees next time.

Rainy day=need for comfort food.
First visit to kitchen sink as it is super close our apartment. Very homely and warm atmosphere.
Our server was courteous, knowledgeable, gave a recommendation as I didn’t know what to try. And it was a great choice. Didn’t have to wait too long to get food. Waters were filled promptly.
Food was served at the correct temperature. Good portion sizes and tasted SUPER Delicious!!!:))
Left feeling satisfied. Great value for money too. All in all loved the creole food!

Good still great but service has gotten intolerably bad. Unprofessional and unfriendly. Very slow and always unapologetic. Sometimes the restaurant is randomly and unexpectedly closed. Just over it.

I don’t know man… I expected a lot better based on the reviews. The location is in a really run down building but YAY for a private parking lot! The space is confused, like it hasn’t been remodeled or given a proper face lift from whatever it had been before the Kitchen Sink moved in… and putting art on the wall does not fix that confused run down vibe, sorry.
We arrived around 2pm on a week day and there were only 2 other tables seated. The service was painfully slow for it not being busy. I ordered the reggie, which is a basic burger, but I went with a turkey patty. The hubs went with a breakfast burger. We ordered a large sweet fries to split. In my mind I kept thinking, sweet potato fries… nope, don’t think that! They are SWEET fries. So while they are sweet potatoes that are cut like fries and fried like fries, they do not taste anything like fries because they are covered and swimming in syrup. You need to eat that shit with a fork! And they are SO sweet, sweet doesn’t even begin to describe them accurately. I have to say they aren’t for me but I appreciate the creativity. Total dining time was well over an hour, of which at least 30 – 40 minutes were spent waiting on our food… which doesn’t equate when there are only three tables with patrons (all that came in at different times).
I used the restroom after eating and quickly found out that NONE of the toilets flush and that the sink had barely enough water pressure to wash the soap off my hands. If I had used the bathrooms first, we probably wouldn’t have eaten here.

Midwestern Burger was awesome!
Jerk wings were awesome!
Bistro fries were pretty good.
Jerk chicken breast sandwich was ok.
Service was mediocre.
I’d return though, there are a lot of things on the menu that I’d like to try.

A good place to meet coworkers after work and that’s just what I did. Set in an old hotel from the early 1900’s; it’s a no thrills place that has enough room to roam around. The place is very eclectic: half is an old hotel that looks pre rehab and the other side looks like a mid rehab restaurant/​bar. But to me that raw blend adds to the appeal. They also had a live band that seemed to love playing off key but hey who cared; it was a Friday!!!
I didn’t drink but my coworkers seemed to enjoy the $ 2 bottled beers they had that Friday, As far as the food it was ok but not a place I would come only for the food.
I had the Billy Joel (turkey sloppy joe) and large onion rings. The Billy Joel was ok; it was spicy but it wasn’t so much so that I couldn’t eat it. For $ 8, I would expect the sandwich to come with some fries or some kind of side but it didn’t (I had to order the o rings separate). The onions inside were too raw for me; no matter how good the batter tasted.
The service was ok; not on my back which I like; but everybody else in my party felt it was lacking because they had to flag the waitress down for their drink orders.
Food: was overpriced chiced out bar food in my view… If I went back, I would have to look at some of the cheaper items on the menu (which I thought I did on this run)

Sadly I’m not a huge fan of this place. Don’t get me wrong, the food is pretty good, but I don’t think it’s that amazing. Service is very mediocre at best and the food is too greasy for my taste. However, the place seems like the hit spot on a weekend. Get your chicken and waffles here and any other greasy foods you want I guess.
I’ll probably revisit this place if someone wants to go, but I won’t be going out of my way to eat here.
Again, nothing wrong with the place, just not my flavor.

The Kitchen Sink has an appetizer that’s basically just sweet potato fries coated in a thick, Exxon Valdez-​like layer of maple syrup – something you’d eat if you were either high or pregnant, or possibly both. It isn’t anything I would have ordered, but it wasn’t my birthday and I also wasn’t paying, so I was in a situation where I had to tread lightly.
This ended up being an ongoing theme in my dinner last night.
I also walked in a little bit late… admittedly. There was hardly enough time to read the entire menu, let alone decide what I wanted to eat, so I just said fuxx it. I get anxious even when I’ve got enough time to make an informed decision. There was no need to torture myself.
My mom and my little brother like going to restaurants and ordering wings in flavors other than buffalo. I don’t believe in doing this, but there isn’t a type of chicken wing I won’t eat, if necessary. They ordered wings with the house sauce, expecting them to be sweet and spicy. They turned out to be like the wings at Hooters but with absolutely no heat at all, for children, the elderly and people with high-​stress jobs answering phones. They weren’t bad for what they were, but why is this a thing that exists?
I never want to eat anything in restaurants other than a bacon cheeseburger, but I only order it about half the time, because I don’t want to look like an eight-​year-​old and/​or someone with extreme OCD. I probably should have gone with the Al’Key Burger, which comes batter-​dipped, with batter-​dipped bacon (neither of which I require, generally speaking).
I also considered the 4 Horsemen, which comes with etouffe, jambalaya and a couple other things along those lines. I went with the Mighty Mo, which seemed to offer more variety in texture than the 4 Horsemen, which you could probably eat with your dentures out. It comes with jambalaya, blackened chicken, three blackened shrimp (not four, not two), a crab cake, andouille sausage and corn fritters.
It was fine, but it wasn’t anything I’d order again. The jambalaya was pretty good, as you might expect, given that it’s one of their main menu items. The shrimp was a little bit on the chewy side, but maybe that’s unavoidable with the blackened preparation? But the chicken wasn’t all dried out. The sausage seems like it should be part of the jambalaya, and maybe there should be some other protein. The corn fritters were just breaded and deep-​fried creamed corn. I enjoyed them, but I’m at a loss for why people rave over them.
My mom, a shrimp and grits connoisseur, ordered the shrimp and grits entrée, the restaurant’s namesake Kitchen Sink. I asked her if it was as good as the best shrimp and grits she ever had, in South Carolina. She said you can’t really compare the two, because the Kitchen Sink’s version has sausage in it. Almost all their menu items do. If I took Farrakhan there, I’m not sure what he’d do. He might have to get the Al’Key Burger and remove the batter-​dipped bacon. The burger would be protected from the swine by the fried batter coating.
My mom picked most of the shrimp from her Kitchen Sink and handed it off to me. It was one of those nights when I could have gone seven entrees deep, as if this were Endless Shrimp, so I went ahead and polished it off. It was amazing. It had the incredibly rich flavor of something that must be very bad for you. It’s not necessarily my kind of thing, but I might order it anyway if I go back, lack of textural variety be damned.

I’m pretty sure that t parking for this place could be a nightmare. But I guess that 5:30p on a Saturday is just early enough, because we lucked out and found a place right across the street!
This place definitely caught my husband off guard — the outside to me says possibly swanky and classy. But the inside is so super casual! There’s an arcade room right across from the hostess’ station and I don’t think anyone working there had much of a uniform — I think our waiter was just in a random t-​shirt and shorts.
Speaking of waiter, he was interesting… He seemed to be one of the few waiters working that evening, despite the gathering crowd. His personality and sense of humor was EXTREMELY dry. And not in a funny way, but in an incredibly awkward way. I don’t think he smiled once throughout our time there. And it when it came to asking questions about the menu, he couldn’t possibly have been less helpful.
But let’s get to the food…
One friend ordered the I Don’t Know… he likes to gamble like that. The ended up bringing him and ENORMOUS bowl of shrimp gumbo. And based on the fact that he was using whatever spare bread pieces he could find to mop up what was left in his bowl tells me that he really enjoyed it. He also shared the corn fritters that came with it, which was very generous considering the fact that they only gave him a bowl of four or five fritters (a pretty small serving in my opinion). But they were pretty yummy! They had a crispy, fried exterior and a creamy, corn-​filled interior. I don’t know that they were amazing enough that I would order them again, but they were certainly tasty enough to try!
My other friend ordered The Pat «Say Jack» — grilled andouille, roasted pork loin, jalepeno bacon, swiss and pepper jack cheese, stone ground mustard, fried pickles and fried banana peppers and a side of house made chips. The sandwich is pretty large, so she only ate half and took the rest home! She let me try and chip — there was a mix of potato and sweet potato chips. I tried the sweet potato and it was awesome!
My husband ordered The Pyro Burger — a ½ lb. burger topped with jalepeno bacon, hot pepper cheese, fried jalepenos, fried hot banana peppers, habanero pickled onions and jalepeno aioli. He knew that all the toppings made it way to spicey for me, but he loved it so much that he insisted I try a small bite of just the burger itself — it was fantastic! It had a bit of kick to it, but also just a well rounded flavor. I will definitely get a burger of my own the next time we go!
I ordered The Dirty Fries — fries, covered with beans, sausage and melted cheese. Unfortunately, this has a huge disappointment. The fries didn’t have the best texture and had zero seasoning. The beans and the sausage was WAY to spice for me — they tasted like nothing but spice, no other flavor was backing it up. I definitely wouldn’t order this again.
Despite this, I still give this place a four out of five. I think I simply ordered the wrong thing. Next time, I absolutely need to get a burger! Also, looking over the breakfast dishes they serve all day… pb&j dipped in french toast batter!!!

We were visiting St. Louis for the weekend and needed to grab a bite to eat pretty late on a Sunday night. We found this place and decided to give it a try since we love creole food! Let me start off by saying service here was a little weird… not bad but, just weird. I’m not sure what our waiters deal was. I’ll try to make this short and sweet. Overall, atmosphere was okay. Parking isn’t the best. Same situation for the cleanliness of the restaurant.
We ordered the 4 horseman I think? Well, the 3 horseman because they ran out of gumbo. And, the mighty mo. Oh, we tried the jerk chicken wings too. Both were sample platters so, we tried a lot of stuff. My favorites were the corn fritters, jerk chicken and blackened shrimp. Everything else lacked flavor or, overcooked (i.e blackened chicken). My crab cake had wayyy to much breading too. Which was disappointing.

The Kitchen Sink is an American/​Cajun restaurant located in the Central West End at the base of one of the apartment high rises. And the important thing is you can’t go wrong with anything you order.
CRAB CAKE BEANIE
This was the best Crab Cake Benedict I’ve ever had in my life. I’ve had legit crab cakes from Baltimore and though those may have bigger chunks of crab, the ones from Kitchen Sink were the most flavorful and had great texture. The eggs Benedict themselves weren’t as runny as I would’ve liked, but they were still good. The flash fried spinach were AMAZING. It’s my favorite way to eat spinach :)
KITCHEN SINK (aka shrimp and grits)
This is the namesake of the restaurant. This is a super creamy shrimp and cheesy grits with some chunks of andouille sausage all topped with a Tasso and crab gravy. Can I say YUMMM? My friends who live in STL say this is one of their more commonly ordered dishes, and I can see why.
THE SINK
This is another one of the most popular dishes that my friends order. When you look at this dish, all you pretty much see is a sea of white sausage gravy. But under that is a bed of two biscuits with two sausage patties, tater tots, two eggs over easy, with cheese and bacon. The flavor is out of this world (but so are the calories).
SWEET FRIES
If you could make an appetizer made of sweet potato fries but tasted like French Toast, it would be the Sweet Fries. Instead of just frying sweet potatoes, they also cover it in maple syrup and top it with tiny marshmallows. It is definitely to be shared, and makes a great dessert.
DIRTY FRIES
Another great dish to be shared. This appetizer is almost like Poutine plus beans. All in all, great great flavor and very hearty. This is a must order.
I DONT KNOW
There’s this fun thing that if you’re feeling overwhelmed and adventurous, you can order the «I don’t know» which means the chef can choose whatever he wants to serve. Some friends have gotten salad with some pieces of meat, and I heard one time a whole table ordered the «I don’t know» and each person got something different.
Overall, I’m glad my friends introduced me to this spot and I wish I discovered it earlier in college.
