St Joseph’s Croatian Hall

Found out there was a dance so we drove up from Chicago to check it out, plus it was recommended we go. What an awesome time! They had live music, dancing, homemade eats and INEXPENSIVE drinks, come on, who can beat that?
We had the MOST enjoyable evening and was well worth the drive up. Thanks to everyone who put together such an awesome evening.
So if you enjoy culture (tambura and kolos) keep yourself posted, lots of fun and beautiful people.

Mardi Gras in St. Louis has the potential to be a very messy (and expensive) experience. $ 12 liquor-​flavored (not filled) hurricanes, long lines for dirty, dirty bathrooms, $ 20 bar covers with in/​out privileges, $ 65 covers including tent access + music (what? it’s outside, everyone can hear it for free, anyway). Okay, let’s stop the rant right there and turn this thing around: Next year, head to St. Joseph’s Croatian Hall.
Yes, it’s a church. But Croatians wrote the book on breaking the rules of engagement. Slivo shots before mass, on the premises? Not unheard of. Slivo shots after mass? Standard. What I’m trying to say is… you won’t be missing anything by making St. Jo’s your MGHQ.
The perks:
— Free parking in lot if you get in by 9am (for the true warriors, indeed)
— $ 5 cover gets you in/​out privileges all day
— Beer hall-​style seating in the old hall and round tables in the new hall
— Clean restrooms in both halls (short lines!)
— An adorable (too young for me) DJ who’ll play all your requests (Shake Your Tail Feather, anyone?)
— $ 3 beer/​$ 6 hurricanes/​and unlimited I’m-sure-they’re-cheap brandy shots
— $ 6 turkey legs, $ 5 hamburgers and $ 1 warm + soft pretzels
— Free battered and bruised love life empathy from old Croatian men who nod in understanding but don’t understand a damn word you’re saying (yes, I witnessed this)
— If you end up *falling asleep* here, you’re stumbling distance from either the 8am English mass or 10am Croatian mass
Now if I could just wash away this stamp… ’til next year, St. Jo’s!

This place is a hidden secret. It is also a catholic church located in the heart of Soulard. Mass in English 8 AM Sundays. In to get weird? Mass in Croatian 10AM followed by your choice of beverages. Coffee .50, Soda in a can 1.00, high ball (stiff 7&7) 1.50, beer (Busch only) 1.00. Yes it is amazing that being Catholic you can go to church, and immediately following get drunk.
This place gets crazy during Mardi Gras. Two full bars, and loads of home made and grilled foods. Plus its the cheapest in the area. Plenty of places to sit and take a break, plus its heated.
