Napoleon’s Retreat is an award winning Bed & Breakfast just one mile from downtown, and only two blocks away from numerous shops and restaurants. The inn offers five distinctly decorated rooms in a relaxing, private and comfortable setting that embodies the style and elegance of late nineteenth century St. Louis. All rooms have queen beds, private modern baths, refrigerators, central air conditioning, and complimentary wi-​fi. Start each day with a gourmet three-​course breakfast! Each morning, guests enjoy premium coffee or tea, juice, fresh fruit, a homemade baked good, and a warm entrée. Entrees change daily between sweet (crepes, Belgian waffles, French toast) or savory (souffles, frittatas, quiches). Napoleon’s Retreat Bed & Breakfast is located 1 mile south of downtown St. Louis. There are numerous restaurants and shops within walking distance of the inn. With easy access to highways 44, 64/​40, 55, and 70. St. Louis is at your doorstep when you stay at Napoleon’s Retreat!

History

Established in 1991.

Napoleon’s Retreat Bed & Breakfast is a three-​story Victorian «Painted Lady» mansion that was built in 1880. In 1991, the inn first opened its doors to guests. Napoleon retreated from Waterloo in 1815 — the street address of the B&B.

Business Owner

Stacy and Brian Kistler purchased Napoleon’s Retreat in 2011. We relocated to Saint Louis in 2007 after living in Wisconsin for 10 years. Stacy is originally from Niagara Falls, NY and Brian is from Pittsburgh, PA. We met while in college and married in 2000. We spent our honeymoon in Ireland and stayed in bed and breakfasts throughout our trip. Our innkeeper hosts shared their knowledge of the area with us, adding new depth and greater enjoyment to our stay. We also appreciated the personal touches of each inn, making each feel like we were staying with friends. For over a decade, we’ve sought out beds and breakfasts to stay at during our trips throughout the U.S. and the world. Our «research» as guests has provided us with ideas of what we would like to offer in our bed and breakfast. We welcome your comments and suggestions to help us make our bed and breakfast a five-​star accommodation.

Each guest is personally greeted by our terrier mutts, Indiana & Peanut.

Where do I begin? First of all, I think it is imperative that all business travelers try a little bit like a bed-​and-​breakfast Wolder on work. Not only is it near and more loving to stay in establishment where the caretaker has that did interest in your happiness while you’re there but hotels like Hilton and Marriott see you as a number.
I stayed in the Josephine apartment for about seven full days and one of these weekends included Valentine’s Day and my birthday. Not only were the Praxis form a style and can be adjusted your dietary needs their unique every single day and full of love. Stacy the owner at caretaker of me in spoke to me every single day with text message for John for my well-​being but also explained to me interesting fact about napoleon, Josephine and the entire bed-​and-​breakfast.
The suite had a kitchen bathroom bedroom living room and fireplace. If you stay longer than two nights I definitely recommend this suite. I had an extraordinary time and the prices were extremely affordable for anyone. I can recommend that was meant as a place to not only see inform romantic weekend and also business. I cannot see enough great things about Stacy and Napoleon’s retreat!
You will not be disappointed by your stay and will be a true believer in b&bs after you come here!

Stacy and Brian were amazing! We had a delightful time at their B & B. It felt like staying with friends. Stacy is an amazing chef. Seriously, her breakfasts blew us away! It was better than any that you could find in the STL. It would be awesome if she decided just to open a restaurant, we’d totally be there.

I stayed at Napolean’s Retreat while in St Louis for a business trip. It was just wonderful! I loved being so close to Lafayette Square Park at this beautiful autumn
room was very large and comfortable. Stacy was so friendly and went out of her way to help me get where I needed to go. The breakfast was fantastic! The cost was reasonable. I want to bring my friends and family back to enjoy this beautiful home. Thank you so much.

I am so glad I found this B&B! It was a perfect two day get away. Stacy was really friendly and a perfect hostess. Each morning we were served warm delicious meals. She was extremely accomadating with serving vegan dishes as well. Definitely recommend this B&B.

We had a wonderful time visiting Napoleon’s Retreat and Lafayette Square. The Inn Owner, Stacy, made us feel welcomed, provided good information on what to do in the area, and made a delicious breakfast. The room was very clean and quiet. We stayed on the top floor which had steep steps, but it was a lovely older home and the steps were part of the charm. Thanks, Stacy!

We loved our stay at Stacy’s lovely B&B! She has created a clean, cozy, and comfortable retreat in the heart of Lafayette Square, and we immediately felt right at home in the lovely Burgundy Room. No detail was overlooked, from the bathroom amenities to the high-​speed WiFi to the binder of helpful information in the room to the chocolate chip cookies in the room on our first evening: we felt totally taken care of for our first trip to St. Louis. At the same time, we had plenty of privacy and quiet. The room came equipped with a fridge for restaurant leftovers – always a plus – and full cable for t.v. watching, if that’s your thing. Coffee and tea was available down the hall at all times as well. Breakfast in the main dining room was elaborate but never fussy, with delicious coffee and three (!) lovely courses: usually a fruit starter, a main, and a dessert. We enjoyed our conversations with fellow guests over these convivial meals. The neighborhood is safe, beautiful, and convenient to many interesting restaurants and attractions – one of which is Lafayette Square itself. Oh, and the inn’s adorable pup, Indie, is a treat as well. :)

I am editing my previous review. The owners have some funny policies but I understand have gone out of their way for friends who stayed there and so I am grateful for that. I think they should try to take as laid back and approach as possible to cancellations and watch tone on phone.

Fantastic service, very friendly and helpful staff, and what a gorgeous venue. Looking forward to my next interaction with this beautiful spot in the heart of historic St Louis. Check out the friendliness of the Midwest and enjoy a beautifully prepared breakfast of your choosing or the chef’s choice. Stacy (the chef) is fantastic to work with and will help you with any dietary concerns prior to arrival. Definitely can’t wait to return!

This is hands down one of the nicest B&Bs I have been to. Hospitality abounds. You couldn’t ask for better service, breakfasts, cleanliness, or comfort. Stacy’s skills as a hostess are among the best I have seen. The charm she has added to every nook of this place shows her great love and passion for what she does. Our beds were soft and warm. The air conditioning was ours to control. The double soaker tub in the bathroom comes with complementary bath salts and big white fluffy towels beckoning you in.
And oh my god the food!!! Do not skip breakfast. Everything is home made. Coffee is served by 7:30 and you can drink it back in your room, the courtyard, the ornate living room or dining room. If you’re nice and quite and don’t take up too much space Stacy will gladly share her space in the kitchen while shes cooking a fabulous custom breakfast. She accommodates any eating preference as long as you let her know when you book (its an option when you book at her website). Breakfast is served by 8:30 weekdays and 9:30 weekends.. If she hadn’t gone into business as a B&B owner she could have run her own café. No lie. I bet she could up her revenue sending tourists out with packed lunches/​picnics. I’d pay.
All in All, don’t waste your money anywhere else. This location is superb, its a quiet haven, parking is easy, the restaurants and bars around the corner are awesome (Don’t miss Baily’s Chocolate Bar) and its a 5 minute ride to Busch Stadium for you baseball lovers. Also, a straight shot to the Botanical Garden or Butterfly Sanctuary right off the highway.

My husband and I stayed at Napolean’s Retreat when we were passing through St. Louis recently. We have to say that it was absolutely wonderful. The house is gorgeous inside and out and is located next to a beautiful park (great for those who like to get in a morning run while on vacation). Stacy was a wonderful hostess and gave us many fine recommendations for dinner.
Our room was comfortable and lovely, and the toiletries that were provided smelled fabulous (and were environmentally friendly as well).
The homemade breakfast that Stacy made was delicious and included some of the best granola pancakes I’ve ever tasted.
If you are going to be in St. Louis, I would highly recommend visiting Napoleon’s Retreat for a stay that will be comfortable, enjoyable, and rewarding.

Aww lovely. It’s a super cute neighborhood that was very safe, next to a delightful park.
I totally wanted to steal more of the toiletries in the bathroom; fortunately they’re made and sold locally! Such a delight when the soaps and shampoos smell lovely.
Facilities were charming; we had the back cottage with a full kitchen and dining area, and a little patio, as well as a small terrace off our bedroom on the second floor; it seemed all the rooms had a bit of a patio, which was delightful on warm spring evenings.
The house itself is furnished in a federal style, and is just beautiful; as are all the homes in the area. We were only in St Louis for two days but were fully entertained just strolling looking at homes around the neighborhood, the local shops, and the park across the street.
The only downside was that the TV upstairs in the bedroom didn’t actually work; the cable didn’t come in, which didn’t really bother us, but might bother some.
The proprietor is lovely and an incredibly good cook. I’ve stayed at B&B’s before and breakfast is usually a bit dry with some croissants and jam and coffee and mealy eggs, but her breakfasts were outstanding! We joked later that we should’ve cancelled our plans for brunch with friends since we were already full, and her food was so much better than what was on offer at the restaurant!

Excellent Location in a Charming Historic B&B. Breakfast was a delicious big meal that kept us full until around 3:00 each day. The shower could use a bigger water heater, but that is our only complaint… Hopefully the new owners will have that fixed soon.

Napoleon’s Retreat is a gorgeous bed-​and-​breakfast in the charming, historic neighborhood of Lafayette Square.
I want to live in this house. Seriously. Spacious rooms, high ceilings, great décor, nice little courtyard, separate carriage house… it’s really nice looking.
The owners, Michael and Jeff, were accommodating when I needed to change the date that we would be staying and also when I called to let them know I would be a little late for check-​in. I didn’t have a whole ton of interaction with either owner, but they seemed friendly and polite.
We stayed in the Garden Room, the most expensive. Like the rest of the house, it was a very nice room with a relatively comfortable queen sized bed, an armoire, a gas fireplace, and a whirlpool tub for two.
Breakfast obviously varies from day to day, but the morning after our stay they served a baked spiced pear, an artichoke and tomato frittata, and a particularly delicious slice of pumpkin bread.
Two small downsides are responsible for my bumping the review down to four stars from five.
First of all, and something that the owners can’t really help, are the apparently thin walls. From the Garden Room, we were able to hear the owners in the kitchen — and they wake up early to start cooking.
Second, and something that could be fixed, is the hot water heater. We stayed in the middle of the winter, yes, but it wasn’t a particularly frigid night — and the shower took FOREVER to heat up. Furthermore, when trying to make use of the whirlpool tub, the water out of the faucet never got hot. So, it remained unused… and I can’t help but feel like I spent that extra $ 40 on the Garden Room and its whirlpool tub for no reason.

As I was searching for places to stay while apartment hunting in St. Louis, I found that there was little to no cost difference between a hotel and a B&B.
At first, I couldn’t stop connecting Napoleon’s to Napoleon Dynamite & all that I could think of was tater-​tots & unicorns, but after researching the different B&B’s around St. Louis, Napoleon’s was a winner.
Napoleon’s is located in the historic Lafayette Square down the street from Lafayette Park. Michael & Jeff are the innkeepers, but we interacted with Jeff the majority of the time-​my mom & I stayed for 3 nights.
Breakfast was always a surprise, in a good way. I loved waking up every morning to a healthy home cooked meal and freshly cut flowers on the table. Fruits were always fresh, there was a choice of tea or coffee, & juice was also served. Every morning we met new people at the breakfast table either vacationing or passing through St. Louis.
Jeff was really helpful in helping us decided our dinner plans each night-​Vin de Set & Eleven Eleven Mississippi were some of the nearby restaurants. He also told us of the great attractions around St. Louis-​Missouri Botanical Gardens, Gateway Arch, etc.
The room was cleaned everyday, and the location is really peaceful. Street parking was always available. I can’t forget the peonies that were in full bloom out front!
Napoleon’s is definitely the perfect retreat! I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to avoid staying in a typical hotel.
