History
Established in 2005.
Completed between 1886 and 1888, the eight-story Merchants Laclede Building, named after the merger of two of its bank tenants, is one of the oldest examples of St. Louis’ tall fireproof office buildings. Located at Fourth and Olive, Merchants Laclede was one of the first office buildings in the country to have individual fireplaces in the offices.
The building, originally named Laclede National Bank, was designed for the banks and brokerage firms located in the area during the 1880s when St. Louis’ economy was booming. By 1890, St. Louis’ population had grown to the fifth largest in the nation, and the building was part of the commercial epicenter of the city.
Many St. Louis corporations have called the Merchants Laclede Building home, including Fleishman-Hillard, who was headquartered in the building during the 1950s.
