History

Established in 2004.

We opened Four Muddy Paws in November of 2004 with a passion to create a healthy pet market to provide everything for our pet’s mind, body and bowl.

We relocated to Park Avenue in 2007 after purchasing and restoring our century-​old building.

In 2009 we expanded our store to meet the needs of the growing Edwardsville and the Metro East market.

We’re continually researching and discovering the best all-​natural foods and supplements setting rigorous standards for every product category plus we set very high standards for our grooming teams.

We believe strongly in giving back to our community and we’re very conscious in the decisions we make regarding our environment. It is our obligation to give back so that together we can make a difference while also being good stewards of the world we live in.

We work closely with many animal organizations and we started the 501−3C Four Muddy Paws Foundation in 2007 to be able to give back to the Animal Rescue community.

Life changed dramatically on the evening on September 25, 2002. This is the evening that a little black and white puppy came trotting across the highway as we were on our way on a camping trip. We could never have imagined the impact of that fateful day on our lives. Our dog, Salem, is the inspiration for the concept of Four Muddy Paws and for our logo design. We’ll be forever grateful for the gift he has given us.

Jeff and Matt are life-​long animal lovers and live with their rescue dogs Salem and Foster and their cat Sophie.

We believe strongly in giving back to the community as well. Jeff is a volunteer trainer with the Greater St Louis Training Club and Matt serves on the board of Loosen the Leash, a not-​for-​profit bringing together at-​risk youth and rescue dogs through training. They both also work closely with various rescue organizations.

I should start by saying my dog is a pain in the a#*&. But Now that I found Chelsea and Four Muddy Paws I won’t take him anywhere else. My little Chihuahua is over protective and has major separation anxiety, so taking him anywhere is a challenge. Chelsea was great, she waited him out and let him get comfortable and made sure the hand off went smoothly. The great job she did on his grooming was a bonus. Thanks Chelsea!

Four Muddy Paws is the absolute BEST!!!
I’ve been brining my Maltese to Jamie for grooming since September, 2010 (for a total of over 70 appointments). My veterinarian gave me Jamie’s name when I inquired about someone to help me train my fearful dog. I am happy to have a groomer who is a highly skilled trainer as well. I live in West County and I feel the drive to Four Muddy Paws is absolutely worth the travel time!
Without reservation, I can say Jamie and Four Muddy Paws have exceeded my expectations in every way! Clearly the owners and staff of Four Muddy Paws are passionate about their commitment to animals. The shop is warm and inviting and shelves are stocked with all things necessary to care for pets. The staff is very helpful and friendly! Jamie is beyond patient… always finding a way to make my dog look beautiful. She combs patiently through difficult mats and finds a way to remove impossible tear stains. Jamie makes grooming appointments comfortable for my fearful (but high-​maintenance) dog. I now bring my Maltese every 4 weeks and Jamie has a routine she follows to minimize the stress while doing the grooming needed to keep my dog healthy and beautiful! If I forget to make an appointment, and ask to be placed on the wait list, Jamie usually finds a way to fit me into her schedule.
I highly recommend Four Muddy Paws and Jamie!!!

I highly recommend Crystal for grooming services. She is one of the most knowledgeable and gentle groomers at Four Muddy Paws. It is difficult for me to find a highly trained groomer that takes care of the «knots» in my shihtzu-​maltese dogs. Crystal takes her time on them and is meticulous with her work [trust me, I stay and watch at all the grooming appointments]. Crystal is the best. If I didn’t have to relocate I would stick with her for life. Thank you for your fantastic service Four Muddy Paws. Great Staff.

We took our pup here today for a much needed bath, so the review is only based on the self-​serve baths.
The set-​up was pretty decent, but could be a bit cramped if at full capacity. I liked the different options for shampoo (different skin types, scents, etc.). The bath area itself is pretty typical for dog baths, but having the pet wipes was a great bonus. During the bath, our 60lb dog seemed very relaxed and happy to get some pampering in today. The only downside of the day was that the hot water ran out for the last 10 minutes of our bath time and our dog started shivering. We waited it out for a few minutes, but it seemed like there was too much water being used to let the hot water heater catch up. The drying station was great and our pup left looking adorable and clean. Overall, we had a great experience here. Easy to find, good parking, and good value for our money ($ 14 for basic wash). Less 1 star because of not having enough hot water (idk how busy the day was though). We will definitely return in a few weeks!

Note: This review is just for the dog grooming services. My other experiences as just a «shopper» here have been very good (really nice employees).
My experience with Four Muddy Paws dog grooming actually happened awhile ago, but I forgot to write a review (I just wanted to warn anyone else if they have a difficult dog). I scheduled to have my dog groomed on a weekday because they were booked on the weekend for months and he really needed it. I called beforehand and explained that due to the nature of my job, I am unable to pick him up as soon as he was ready but was reassured MULTIPLE times that it would be ok because people drop off their dogs in the morning and pick them up after work all of the time. I reiterated that my dog isn’t too fond of being kenneled and that he’ll probably whine and bark a lot, but I was assured that they are «used to it» so it wouldn’t be a problem. Well I drop my dog off in the morning as planned and no later than an hour and a half later, I get a call from them saying that my dog is upset in the kennel so I have to come pick him up. I could hear him in the background doing his usual «song» (it wasn’t anything excessive, just barking and whining). I told the woman that it is impossible for me to leave my work and that I am over 45 minutes away so I couldn’t do that and that I was reassured time and time again that this wouldn’t be an issue. The woman responded with «I’m sorry, but you HAVE to come pick up your dog». There was no negotiation. No choice. I frantically called my husband to see if it would be possible for him to leave work (again, a huge inconvenience) to come pick him up. He was able to, but not easily.
Long story short, I will not be using their grooming services again. Dogs bark. That’s what they do. I used to work at a Humane Society — you just deal with it. That’s your job. We were offered no apology or anything to be greatly inconvenienced in the middle of our work day. I get the feeling this place is more catered to people with smaller dogs. Every dog I saw being dropped off that morning was tiny, so maybe they’re only used to deal with small dog yip yapping. Either way, we won’t be back.

I LOVE this pet store! It is locally owned and all the staff are very helpful and nice! They offer FREE delivery if you live within 5 miles. If you live further away they will deliver for a small fee. They have a room where you can bathe your pup large or small and they have great drying stations as well :) The prices are fair and reasonable. They have a large variety of dog food including organic. For my puppy’s dog food they have a frequent buyer program every 9th bag is FREE! Their computer keeps track of your purchases so that process is painless! They have a lot of toys and clothes for dogs of all sizes. Last December Santa was there with a $ 25.00 donation we got 3 different poses and a huge bag of goodies for our puppy. The money went to a great charity in the area! Staff are very knowledgeable about all the products and they have FREE treats for your pup at the cash register. My puppy LOVES going to the store :)

came here to buy some birthday treats for my furbaby. I was a little disappointed by their selection. they didn’t have as much as some other «pet boutiques»… i did take advantage of being there and checked-​in on Unilocal for one free treat and got some toys and birthday treats for my pup. I did appreciate how they didn’t follow me around and kinda let me be until I was ready to check out. they did have a lot of natural treats and a large array of dog food that I didn’t really look into much. they also have a nice, large room for grooming dogs… looked quite nifty. I’ll probably look into other boutiques before I come back here…
I’m still excited to shower my pup with all his treats and new toys!

I generally like this place. Good place to give the pup a quick bath. I have no problem with the products. Its the service. Its one person in particular.
The is an older women (mid 50’s, dark hair) who has to be the coldest woman on the face of the earth. Just walks around with a scowl and not helpful in the slightest. Today, she was down right frozen. Hate to do it, but will take my business elsewhere. They will be losing $ 200 a month.

I’ve been taking my Westie to Four Muddy Paws for almost a year, and I have never been disappointed. She always looks great. Today I brought her in for an appointment I scheduled online only to find the appointment had disappeared into the ether. They said I could leave her there for a bath and nail trim, but she probably wouldn’t get a cut. I was pleasantly surprised when I picked her up to see that Crystal, the groomer, had found the time to get a haircut in after all. Very happy to see my pretty girl clean and neat.
They also have a great inexpensive self-​service bath area and lots of wonderful food, toys, collars, and lots of other pet products. We love Four Muddy Paws!

Love this place for self-​service dog washes. I exclusively go in on Saturdays and Sundays and rarely ever have to wait more than 5 minutes for an open station. They provide the aprons, shampoo, conditioner, brushes, ear wipes, towels, and a dryer. Sometimes, when there is no one at the drying station next to mine, I use that dryer too, and can dry my dog twice as fast– helpful hint.
I have also had my dog’s nails cut here many times. They may only have the groomer in on Saturdays (not Sundays). I usually have to wait until they are free (maybe 10 minutes max). I think the nail cutting is $ 10. Totally worth it since they do such a good job.
There is a fenced in area right outside that you can wait in with your dog off leash.

I absolutely LOVE this store! While a little small, the selection is stellar and the staff is always super friendly and knowledgeable about what they have in stock. It’s probably the best place in the metro area to get antler chews for your dog. Love it!

This is such a fun lil pet boutique. Everything a pet could want from kitschy to glam! I love their fresh baked treats and can never resist picking up a few of the iced cookies — they look so good I almost wanna try one myself!
If you’re the adventurous type, try the self-​serve dog wash area! You can’t beat the prices, either.
I only wish they were in MY neighborhood!

I stop in four muddy paws and buy something is don’t actually need at least twice a month. I had popped in to wash my own dogs at the self wash station in the past, but as a participant of the Stray Rescue Enrichment Program, I had taken my buddy to castle wood and he had gotten FILTHY. I called to see if they offered a discount for shelter dogs, and they let me bring him in for free. That’s not all – recently, I had purchased some fresh breath additive for my dog’s water bowl, and it did not agree with her at all. She was sick for almost two days. I took it back in, and I didn’t have to say more than 3 words. They took it back, opened, no questions asked.
A downside to being so great, is being so popular. If you want to book a grooming appointment, plan ahead. Way ahead. They are usually booked about 2 weeks out.

Excellent job grooming my 2 Pugs
The staff was nice & informative. Lucy and Bam seemed to have enjoyed their stay and I was pleased with how cleaned they looked & smelled.
The festive bananas were also a nice touch. I am very particular about my Pugs’ wrinkles & ears being cleaned and Four Muddy Paws had it coveted with having to be instructed.
The price was a little steeper than my previous groomer but the service, facility & experience made it well worth the switch.
Very professional service setup with online scheduling/​cancellations.

Four Muddy Paws has everything I love about a locally owned neighborhood boutique pet shop. This is not your typical frou frou snobby pet boutique though — the staff are friendly, helpful, and the products range in price from reasonably affordable to high-​end. No matter the price point, all of the toys, collars, leashes, treats, kibble, and everything else in the store is carefully curated to be of the highest quality. I haven’t purchased anything there that I have not been happy with.
The self service bath stations are one of the most convenient things for anyone who has a furry furry beast of a pet. I brought my sweet old golden retriever here for all of her baths before she passed away and we were so happy to be able to leave all of the fur out of my bathtub drain. They have a nice selection of bath packages that range from $ 14 for a basic wash (shampoo + conditioner) to $ 16 for a «premium» wash (specialty treatments, e.g. oatmeal treatment for itchy dogs, skin and coat conditioning with shea butter). For my girl golden I loved getting her the premium wash with the lavender/​mint scented shampoo/​conditioner. She smelled wonderful and was so fluffy and soft after baths. The bath facilities are specially designed to make it safe for your pet — with step stools to help your dog into the high-​walled bath tubs. On the other side of the wall facing the bath tubs, there are pet drying stations with high-​powered «blow dryer» hoses. They do make a ton of noise though so you may have to acclimate your pet to be comfortable and not freaked out by the ruckus. Once my new golden retriever puppy grows his full adult coat I will be taking him here so that we can avoid the mess at home.
One thing to note for bathtime: make sure you arrive at least an hour before closing time for the store because I have been turned away before showing up just 55 minutes before closing time. I promised to be quick, but was still unfortunately turned away.
The seasonal toys and leashes and doggy clothing are super adorable and can be quite affordable. I bought my pup a candy cane colored striped collar for just $ 12 or $ 14. It looks so handsome on him and is made out of durable material with a snap-​in buckle and is so convenient not having to struggle with a regular buckle with notches.
The baked goods section near the checkout counter is wonderful and also seasonally themed — I once bought a mini bundt cake decorated to look like a spider with yogurt «frosting» for my pup. It looked good enough to eat, myself, lol.
One more thing about the dog food selection — they carry a wide variety of holistic, natural, grain-​free foods. This is wonderful for pets with sensitive stomachs or food allergies. I feed my dogs the «Taste of the Wild» brand, which is not sold at big box pet stores like PetSmart or Petco. Super appreciate that they carry this brand!
Love that this pet store is just around the corner from where I live! We’ll be coming back again and again :)

Adopted my dog a month in a half ago.
She wouldn’t let me dremel her nails and I heard good things about 4MP. Went there and they held up, everyone was really nice and gave me good advice – being a new dog owner.
I’ll be going back once a month for her pedicure.
Only $ 12! and I’m assuming no tip needed since there wasn’t any signage.
UPDATE!:
thanks to Steve’s knowledge you should definitely tip! I feel like a JA for not knowing and assuming… But yes always tip your groomer, I mean lets face it they’re doing something either you can’t or don’t want to.

It was time for our big girl Grace to get a new harness. After shopping around without her, we narrowed our selection down to those at Four Muddy Paws (no surprise to me), but I had to let the other half do the diligent research. On the big shopping day we loaded Grace into the CRV for a day out with daddies. She felt so special, the two Shelties had to stay home and she had her two daddies all to herself.
Once we got to FMP, we realized how clueless we really were about selecting a harness for a 65 lb. dog. Grace walks well on a lead, but at times she does have a mind of her own. Those city squirrels and rabbits always seem to catch her attention and a regular collar or Martingail collar just does not do give us the control we need.
Being clueless, Marty came to our rescue. He explained the difference between the variety of harnesses they carry and shared his own testimonial for the one he uses on his own dog. Marty even allowed Grace to try them on and adjusted them for her body frame. We tried two on, the second one she was in between sizes and it did not fit her body type properly. (We’ve all been there) So we went back to the first one for a second fitting. He was so patient with us and Grace. He made sure it was a good fit and that we understood how to make adjusts if needed. Now that she has a new Freedom Harness, I just know her being a good bitch she’ll be wanting new coordinated collar and leash to match.
A special treat and I do mean treat was getting a free soft bite cookie with our Unilocal check-​in. Grace not only got a new harness, but she got a FREE cookie as well.
The Shelties were so jealous when she returned home from her outing. As if they’re not spoiled themselves.

This is the first pet boutique we visited for our pups and it’s still one of my favorites. I come here to get my pup her treats, food, and of course some of their homemade treats they order from Treats Unleashed.
The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. They really helped me through the first year of when I got my puppy and was clueless about taking care of a dog. They lead me in the right direction for nutrition as well as some training tips (the harness has been so helpful and is in the cutest design). They also loaded me with free dog food samples to see what worked for my girl and her sensitive tummy.
They have events frequently for dogs and their humans with many giveaways. These are often coordinated with other local businesses which is fun, for people to get food and wine and have their dog with them.
They offer professional grooming services, and while I never tried them myself, I have done their $ 12 DIY pup bath. My little girl was scared of the dryer, but my other dog was fine. They have all the equipment (and it’s the good stuff) so it’s easy peasy!
They have a reward program — if you buy 10 bags of dog food, get one free. If you check in on Foursquare, you will get an offer to get a free bulk treat item which I do every time I visit :-)
The shop is small and a little cramped because of the location, but the area for bathing dogs is a bit bigger. When I go to pick up food, I usually try to leave my dog at home for this reason as it can get crowded with humans and their dogs in there!
Prices are high because they offer the good stuff, so I don’t dock them for that. It costs more to give your dog good quality stuff so that goes with the territory.
It’s a one stop shop for me as they carry everything from leashes and collars to raw dog food.

I was in the area one Sunday afternoon after eating brunch at Four Square Brewery next door.=I have been down here countless times but for some reason this was the first time I saw Four Muddy Paws. I checked them out on Unilocal and once I saw they had a check-​in offer, I had to go it.
I was with a friend who was looking for a dog food that didn’t make her pet’s stomach upset – I was just there to browse the toys.
We first looked at the dog toys. The item that caught my eye the most, which I might have to go back and get, was a massive tug-​of-​war rope. It was probably 6 – 7 feet long with knots tied in it. My dog loves huge toys (he’s a 100 pound German Shepherd) and I knew this would be perfect for him. He needs big industrial sized ones because he will destroy anything else in a matter of minutes. After looking at the toys we asked one of the workers about a dog food that would help with stomach pains.
The worker was SO FRIENDLY! She took the time to walk us around the store and told us what would be helpful and what to avoid. She convinced us that the best item would be a powder you put on the food that should help with any stomach issues. I was skeptical at first but my friend still got it – she was willing to try anything. It worked! This saved her a lot of time and a trip to the vet! The staff was very knowledgeable/​friendly.
If you are looking for toys, food, or grooming for your 4-​legged friend then you should check this place out! 5 stars for-​sure.

Four stars ALONE for being a pet shop that doesn’t smell like the ape house at the zoo… every time I walk in I hold my breath expecting to be hit with something evil, but I’m always pleasantly surprised. Not only can you get your pet groomed here, but you can actually do it yourself at the self-​grooming station for a mere $ 12. Do you know how valuable that is? $ 12 bucks can save you the trouble of a soaked bathroom, and who wants to bathe in the same tub their pet gets washed in anyway?
Aside from the grooming options there are so many things to buy for your furry pals. There’s a huge selection of doggy sweaters (and even doggy scarves for winter, seriously), tons of hand-​made treats, vintage Santa toys, catnip candy canes and more. Prices aren’t too high and everything is just so well made and fun.
Worth a stop for pet owners if you’re in the Lafayette Square area, and give their grooming services a try, too. The owners are great guys and I love that their own dogs just chill out around the store all day.
Dare I say this place is dog-​gone adorable? That might be the corniest line yet out of all of my reviews. But it is, I promise.
