The Fifth String

I really like this place, I’ve played mainly out of ‘guitar’ magazine and am an intermediate player at best for the last 30 years. Learning to play from John is a kick, I feel like a beginner again– learning his method/​pattern of switching around keys, but am making much faster progress this time around! Also, group lesson on Saturdays around 11 I think, and group jam sessions at least once during the week.

For a place called «The Fifth String», they were woefully short in the banjo department.
Just 3 beginner-​level Gold Tones.
Meh.

They never contacted me back because obviously they don’t provide all the services that was stated to be offered!

So I finally went in and bought my second guitar from John Green and the guys at Fifth String. It was a step up from the first purchase, and thus was a big decision for me. I never felt pressure, even though I came in and out of the shop about five times before going for it. John and Steve were always more concerned about my musical needs than about selling a guitar, and that’s rare. Thanks guys!

I’m actually quite surprised that I’m one of the first to review this wonderful little local music shop. I popped in for the first time when I was getting a Ukelele restrung for my wife and a second time when I was looking for a general tune up and to fix the action on my bass.
The shop is easy to pass up at it sits in an unassuming little building half a block off of Folsom Blvd. Walk in though, and you’ll find a stripped-​down selection of some fantastic, mostly refurbished or previously well-​loved instruments, and mostly of the string variety. What really pushed me to give a star per string was their customer service: I just had a wonderful conversation over the phone with a gentleman (sorry, forgot your name!) who said my bass was fixed up four days earlier than expected and for $ 30 cheaper than they originally quoted. He was patient, friendly and answered the many questions I had about how I can eventually become the funky white equivalent of James Jamerson.
