Maverique Style House

Blowout is the worst name for a service.
All I think about is my friends with kids talking about their unfortunate moments with diapers and poop strewn about. But I got past the name and finally decided to treat myself to a ‘blowout’. I understand why they call it that, but my mind immediately goes to diaper problems!
Before I made my appointment here, I used Unilocal to look up a few locations on the Grid. I called and emailed a few, just to be certain what their ‘blowout’ entailed. I decided on Maverique because they had plenty of time slots open (I called a week before the event) and was told I would receive a wash, dry, and soft curls — or whatever the stylist thought would look good. It was very open ended.
This type of treatment is really over indulgent in my book. But I was attending a friends wedding and I didn’t feel like doing my own hair. There’s a first time for everything. Friends have done it and they turned out great, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. I was skeptical the entire time, just because I think spending money for someone to wash, dry, and curl my hair is beyond ridiculous.
Upon arrival, I checked in with the receptionist. This studio is lovely, modern, not crazy loud, open, and inviting. Their remodel was well done, as I’ve run past this salon for years!
I waited a few minutes and was offered a beverage by the nice receptionist. I dabbled in a little trashy mag time, until Ristina (sorry if I butchered the spelling) came to get me. Once she did, she brought me to her chair. She evaluated the situation. I had gross gym hair, because I was told they would wash it. So, I took advantage of it. She then took me to the shampoo area where I was treated to a nice shampoo with head massage. They entire shampoo area was completely packed, it was a busy Saturday.
Then back at her station she took her time to blow dry my hair, add volume, and chat with me. She was really sweet and it was an enjoyable time. After all my millions of strands were finally dry, she started to style it.
Bless Ristina’s heart. I have a lot of hair. And that is probably an understatement. I had already shown her the dress I was going to wear to the wedding, so could see what she could do with my hair. She curled the mass and it looked awesome. I had mentioned that I thought pulling some of it back would work. Since her next client was late, she spent plenty of extra time with me and trying and untrying things with my hair. In the end we just kept it down with the curls.
My experience was great. It’s the value I place on such a service, which has me hesitant to do this again. If my budget allowed, I’m sure I’d do this more often. It’s a great service and even with all the extra stuff she tried on my hair, she only charged $ 40 in the end. Ristina’ was awesome company and a stylist, I would recommend her for this service!
Parking Note — They do have a parking lot, on the side of the building with the mural. I think she said there is only about 6 or 8 parking spots. Peep there before you pay for street parking!
I guess I’ll keep washing my own dang hair…

Curly Hair? Rachel Taylor is the professional stylist for you! I have been going to Rachel since the salon was still called Lush. Any girl with naturally curly hair will understand the struggle of finding a truly knowledgeable stylist that really understands their hair. Rachel herself has beautiful, healthy, natural curls. She is the only person I trust with cutting my hair. I highly recommend her. Aside from her superior skills, she is an interesting and intelligent person. In my experience, that combination has been hard to find in other salons.

Five stars for Holly Howard. She recently left Maverique and can be found at Salon Kosmo, 1125 18^th at K St. It’s smaller and more private than Maverique, which I prefer. It feels almost like you’ve got your own private salon. Maverique is OK too, just more hectic and open.

Paige is awesome! A total color genius! In the past I have had balayage and my hair always turned brassy red at the bottoms… she was able to get me to the ash brown blonde color that I wanted. She also gives me and boyfriend amazing haircuts! Im convinced she is the best hair stylist around! Thank you Paige!!!

Annie is the absolute best! I will never go anywhere else. She knows exactly what I need everytime I see her.

Love love love Maggie!!! Can’t believe that I’m just now reviewing after having gone to her over what feels like a decade! She understands thick hair and how it needs to be cut and styled.

After knowing Timothy Jewel for 15 years, I finally decided to go to him a few months ago. I had stuck with my other stylist for 10 years out of habit. I am so glad I decided to try Timothy. He is a true artist and puts a lot of thought into his work. The first time I went, I left with the best cut and color I had ever had in my life. Every time I leave there, I feel beautiful and confident. He is my lifetime trusted stylist. I will never let anyone else touch my hair. A true artist.

Having a beautiful head of hair is like having that perfect accessory, I just MUST have it. I get just that at Maverique. Every. Single. Time.
I love all of the stylist at Maverique. Many of the stylist have trained under the careful eye of Shannon (the amazing and wonderful owner) Marlin, who is up on the latest and greatest hair styles and colors.
They wont talk you into anything. Not even product. Their mission is to make you happy and look your most amazing self. If you want to grab product on your way out, they sell Bumble & Bumble (totally FAB product). Ive never seen it priced for less anywhere else.
If you’re into funky or classic looks, you’ll be incredibly pleased with your experience. If you’re interested in a specific style, they will make it happen. They will also tell you if it wont work. isn’t that what you want? We all can’t look the same!
The stylist work with men and women. Remember to call and make your appointment. The receptionist is well versed with the different techniques of each stylist, and will book your appointment with the stylist who will care and meet your needs.

Haven’t written a review on Unilocal in forever, but I had to write this one.
Ana–
I was looking for a hair stylist in Sacramento and Maverique was close to my home and work. I checked Unilocal and saw the rave reviews for Ana. Made an appointment and she’s been my girl every since. I can’t tell you what a blessing she’s been, as a stylist and as a friend.
You know when you ask for something, and they don’t listen and do what they want to do? Or when you probably should have been talked out of something that was not a good idea and you realize it later? Ana is the perfect blend of both-​she will listen and understand what you’re asking for, but she will also guide you-​telling you what your hair needs and what it can handle. She’s an expert, a perfectionist and an artist.
Ana’s also not afraid to try things, which was a breath of fresh air for me. When I asked about fun colors, she told me to go for it. When I asked about extensions, she gave me several options and we discussed it at length (no pun intended) to find the right option for me.
So far we’ve done blonde highlights and dark lowlights, color, clip-​in extensions, keratin bond extensions, and blue mermaid ombré. We’ve had some fun, let me tell you. When she asked what colors I wanted to try, I told her about a video game holiday (Mass Effect’s N7 Day, if you’re a gamer) and she was all about it. We talked about my options and the cost, and decided on both dye and clip-​in extensions. It was so rad. I felt like a video game princess ;)
Then we stripped the color and went back to blonde (took two appointments, with a fun pink color in-​between) and planned out the keratin bonds. She put in the extensions after the blonde was back, and it was a lovely birthday present. I had some trouble with them but Ana made time for me and I think we figured it out :)
The blue ombré was an idea from Pintrest and my hair looks so rad! I love that Ana’s not afraid.
I’ll attach pictures of all the cool things we’ve done so far. I can’t recommend Ana enough-she’s fantastic. We talk about everything and she’s given me so much hairapy, which both me and my hair really needed.
Katie–
Such a doll. I told her I wanted more arch for my eyebrows, more drama, and that’s what I get. She also applies a cream beforehand and I never get breakouts from the wax anymore, awesome. And such a great vibe from her. I come in for my eyebrows about every three weeks. Katie has also given me great advice on my skin too and how to better take care of it.
Jeff–
Facials: Jeff is fabulous. I’ve been coming to him for facials to treat my acne. He’s patient and positive. When I get upset about my acne (a constant battle,) he reminds me how far we’ve come since my first visit and tells me not to give up. My first ever facial was with Jeff. I trust him. If you’re nervous about it, Jeff always has the cold towel if you need it. And he’ll give you his number to contact him anytime with questions.
Makeup: Trusting Jeff after getting facials for several months now, I booked an appointment to have a makeup tutorial and oh my gosh, this guy knows makeup. I’ll never be as good doing the makeup myself, but Jeff showed me what to do and I need to practice :) Jeff gave me a beautiful, natural look that I love and will do my best to mimic at home.
I’m at Maverique Salon quite often. And I recommend it for all your vain needs. Have some wine or beer or coffee, tell them what you’re going for, and trust them.

Ana Castro is fabulous! I did not have my hair done in 2 years and found her and she brought my hair back to life and I will not go anywhere else. She is the best when it comes to color especially blonde. She’s very knowledgeable about hair and the products. I highly recommend her. I’ve never had a bad experience.

I tried to make 2 reservations for a wedding hair appt on a wednesday 6 weeks in advance… the receptionist was rude and tried to pawn me off onto the Spanish fly salon. I complained to to the manager who tried to rectify the situation. The owner was the one who dropped the ball! She told the manager she would send the patron (me) –a $ 50 gift certicate
Well, she never did. The owner is unreliable, this was the first time have dealt with this salon and am not sure if I would yry them again or not…

Dana, at Maverique Style House, has been doing my hair for ten years. She is professional, prompt, friendly, and very good at delivering me a terrific cut and color each time I sit in her chair. The salon is clean and organized, plus parking is a breeze, since they have their own parking spaces in a lot behind the building.

I see Ana Castro at Maverique, and she is the best! I moved to Sacramento two years ago after having a great haircutter that I loved in San Francisco. I went to about 5 other stylists in Midtown before finding Ana. They were fine, but not great. I found Ana earlier this year, and she is GREAT! No more searching for me! My hair always looks amazing, and she is always willing to suggest ideas to change things up. One of my favorite things about Ana is that she’ll be straight and tell you when you’re asking her to do something that will look terrible [thank you for ignoring my pleas to cut it shorter last time… it was already very short, exactly as you said :-)]. Ana is also super cool and fun to talk to. Highly recommended for a men’s cut.
As for Maverique Style House generally, it’s a very nice spot in Midtown with a great, friendly staff. Very clean. Very fun vibe. Always offers a drink when you come in. All around excellent.

Fabtastic salon. I have been living in Midtown for nearly four months and have been meaning to come in. Just walking by this gorgeous building caught my eye. I called and asked about pricing, which was fantastic, and they told me I could come in as soon as I could. Ristina did my hair and she definitely knows what she’s doing. Very knowledgable about Bumble & Bumble products and very precise in how she cuts hair. ¹⁰⁄₁₀ will be going back to her. Super friendly too! With her suggestion I cut off 6 inches of hair and it looks incredible! I have never been this happy with a wash and cut.

Rochelle is the best at color and listens to what you want, while still giving suggestions and advice.

Upon walking into Maverique Style House, Robin who was at the front desk, greeted me with a warm smile and welcomed me in. It was my first time ever walking in and, Robin’s excellent customer service made it a very good experience. I have walked in to businesses where the customer service is seriously lacking or, just not focused on the customer’s experience. Robin answered the questions I had and, was very thorough and genuine in doing so. Her upbeat personality was definitely refreshing and, left a very good first impression. This can really make all the difference. Thankyou!

I have been seeing Angel for about 2 years now for regular cuts and color. She has always been receptive to me achieve a certain look, or if I come in with general ideas she is able to help me come up with a good plan. She helps with my styling questions and concerns. I think she is amazing at the color work she does– She is very knowledgeable and confident and has helped me achieve a few different color looks. I love having a stylist that I can trust to know my hair and use her skills to get the most fab outcome.
Angel once did a makeup look with my hair styling for a special event. Just like my hair, she rocked the makeup look to. She was flexible with how bold I wanted my look to be and made something I was proud to wear for the entire event. Thanks Angel for all your work!

Ana Castro is absolutely amazing!!! I went to another stylest who destroyed my hair, and it was awful! It was also short so I wasn’t sure what Ana could do to fix it. But Omg she did! She also added amazing color and highlights! !!! Love her! !! If you want an amazing cut/​color go to ana! I will NEVER go anywhere else!!! Thanks Ana!!!

My husband got his hair cut by Holly the day of our wedding. She was fantastic! She looked at his hair and suggested he take a lot of weight off which was causing it to fall over to his forehead. She also suggested the (un) dress cream by Bumble and Bumble. Those products, combined with her suggested haircut was a perfect match. We both loved the haircut and it has since been extremely manageable. Thank you, Holly!

Ana Castro is the best! You know a cut is good when it grows out evenly and looks great for weeks. My hair is thick and she is great at making it look sleek and naturally layered. (A woman in NYC asked me where I got my hair cut!)
She cuts my husband’s fine hair and he swears her cuts last 2 or 3 weeks longer than anywhere else. When she trims his beard it is sculptured. Incredible!
Ana is reliable, artistic, pleasant and professional.

I haven’t been here since it was lush so I had no idea that the same stylist then still worked there. TeJae was very nice and very detailed. I love my hair. I could have had higher layers but all in all I’m very happy with how it came out. Btw the haircut was $ 60, you get what you pay for and I can tell u at a supercuts it wouldn’t have looked as great as it did

I came into this place to repair a hair cut I got at another place a few weeks prior. Becca was my stylist and she knew exactly what she was doing. When I left, my hair looked great, but what was really remarkable was that it stayed looking great (my hair seldom behaves a few days after I get a haircut).
Becca was really easy to talk to and professional, she recommended the right product for my hair, which I can’t recall the name of right now. I will certainly come back next time I need to look extra-​sharp for something!

Wonderful salon! You’ll be greeted with a beverage of you choice (beer, wine, coffee, cucumber mint infused water) and get friendly service from knowledgeable stylists. Sarah V. is great. She offers advice to take my ideas and ensure they work for my skin tone, styling regimen and lifestyle. She can do edgy color, beautiful highlights and textured razor cuts that I always love. Make an appointment and you’ll be hooked.

I have been going to Katie for years, for both waxing and facial services. I have followed her when she moved salons and I will continue to do so if she ever leaves Maverique.
She is very professional and makes you feel super comfortable. I have never had a bad experience and my skin has never had a bad reaction to her products. She does not use the cheap wax that some salons use, and her facials are nothing short of a mini vacation, they are so relaxing :)
Go check her out, you will not be disappointed!

Holly is amazing!
I have stubborn hair that takes color differently around my face! No stylist EVER got it right… even after I explained. BUT Holly listened, and fixed my problem. And even explained what was going on. She’s an artist and a hair coloring/​styling pro!!! And she’s easy to just chill and relax around while she works her magic!!! Looking for a pro… she’s the one !!!

Made an appointment for a cut, same day.
I usually wait and see how the cut is after a few days or weeks to judge but seriously, i didn’t like it off the bat. I left not liking it and I still don’t like it. I wonder if my stylist was new. I didn’t get a card either. But like, if you’re new at places… would it be a $ 50 cut? I paid $ 50 plus tip.
I showed up. I was offered a drink. Got water. Talked about what I would like. Really it was just to clean up my ‘do. The shampoo time was great. Went back to the chair and without really talking about how much length to take off or how I would like it styled afterward. it just happened. Boom, that’s what you get. And that would be cool if it turned out great but my hair was cut uneven and i’m like what the @#$%@. I just had to go.

Ana Castro is the BOMB! I’ve been to her a few times and have left feeling sexy, chic, and confident. Every few months my hair needs a makeover in some small or big shape or form.
TIP to ALL people getting your hair cut with a professional stylist: Bring multiple photos of cuts/​colors/​styles you like. I do that with Ana and ask for her honest feedback on what will be flattering with my proportions, face shape, and hair texture. I love that she gives her feedback, but doesn’t force anything on me. If you’re hesitant or super nervous, she’s so reassuring and she’ll even take the hair cutting in stages (i.e. if you’re going from long hair to short, etc.).
Ana also made sure I was comfortable and kept me stocked with water and whatever drink they had on hand that suited my fancy.

What’s great about Maverique, besides the trendy and comfortable vibe and décor, is that they keep your info on file so if you forget who your stylist was the first time you visited and wanted to have them style your hair again, they can pull that info up for you. It’s a bit on the pricey side depending on what you want done each time you go in. Totally worth every penny because her quality is superb! I’ve gone the $ 30 hair cut route here and it’s not pretty.
Having moved to Sacramento only a year ago, I seriously scored with Ana and Maverique!
