Can anyone post on social media, create a landing page or write website content? Sure, they probably won’t develop a strategic plan on how to best use social media with advertising to drive traffic to your landing page or website with well written content. They probably won’t develop and manage campaigns that will show a return on the investment you are making to grow your business.

I have been involved in social media marketing since 1996, before it was cool, using AOL Chat Rooms to connect with other people outside of my normal sphere of school, work and basketball. It went from social networking to social marketing when I began sharing about my fathers custom floating dock business, G & G Welding.

My dad and I built a dock for a show and I talked about it so much that a few people from the chat rooms showed up. I was working at Target so I couldn’t go, wish I would’ve. I still regret not being there for my dad.

Fast forward to 2005. MySpace was pretty popular. I used it to meet new people after moving to California in 2004 because I only knew my family. I also used it to promote selling mobile phones at Go Wireless in 2005. Which worked until I moved to a new store.

Skip to 2008. My wife tells me about Twitter, which was completely new to me. I was working as the Business Development Manager for a private security company called Patrol Plus…
