Awesome bread, but long time vacationers be aware that they have moved to West Street in Rutland. Under new ownership and called«The Bakery». Old place on Wales street is closed but owl sign still on building. A defensive counter person in the new place told me that they had a sign up for a month, but building owner made them take it down. Also, that there was lots of publicity, the phone number hasn’t changed, and they have a FaceBook page with the new address. Well, Miss Defensive, if you don’t live in Rutland and only travel there for vacation, people may have missed that. Plus the first three Google Hits all have the old address. 4 stars instead of 5 for the welcoming in the new location.

I grew up just outside of Rutland and I remember eating bread from Baba-A-Louis as a young child at the local farmers market. Every time I make a visit back to Vermont I make a point of stopping at Baba-A-Louis! Part of my favorite thing about this place is the location. Its your traditional old style bakery! Its in an old building that is big and open with a small counter with an old school cash register at the front. You can see the ovens from the counter and all the bread is on racks. The absolute best this about this place is the smell of fresh baked bread. On the top of my list of must get on every visit is the Cheese & Herb Croissant, the problem is absolutely everyone loves them so if you don’t get there in the morning they always run out. If your in Rutland or traveling through make sure to make a stop here and pick up some fresh baked bread. You won’t regret it.

OK… this may be strange but after 20 odd years and numerous countries & states later, the bread here is still on my mind. The bread is Devine and I think it’s safe to say I’ll never forget it. Lived in Rutland thru High School and the only bread in the house was always Baba-A-Louis’! I still remember sitting in the car with my sister & mom waiting for the fresh batch to come out of the ovens. We would hurry home slather it in butter. Devine! It was out of this world toasted too! Lots of bakeries here & there experienced, but still nothing like Baba-A-Louis. Stop in on the way to Woodstock, Pico or Killington and beyond.

Cool owl image on the outside wall, quirky shaped space, wood floors, brick walls, big windows and racks full of fragrant fresh bread. Hard to resist! This is buy and go territory as there isn’t any seating for a sit down snack. Get a sticky bun while they are hot and sticky. Sometimes they have palmiers, and they were satisfying but not spectacular. All sorts of bread for sale in whole loaves or they can slice if for you: I recommend the Seeduction, you won’t be sorry.
