Main Floor Covering Carpet One

I would not use this company again. I own rental property in Michigan and a unit I own in Royal Oak needed new flooring (Carpet and Hardwood). I, however, live in Maryland, so I needed to order this by phone. I was not recommended to use Main Floor Covering Carpet One, they just happened to be down the street from the property I own. I initially e-​mailed and then called salesmen there. From the first conversation I found this man to be «disengaged» in me and what I needed. At one point I even told him, via email that he wasn’t answering my questions and that if he didn’t have time to let me know and I would find another company. Things improved, but it was a warning sign I should not have ignored. He recommended that I go to a Carpet One location near me in Maryland to pick what I wanted, which I did (very good suggestion). So with less than one five minute phone call and maybe 4 very brief e-​mails they made a 8000.00 sale which was placed almost 3 months before I needed the flooring installed. Three months later we drove down (an 8 hour drive) to Royal Oak to get the carpet and hard wood installed in this rental unit (we stayed in a hotel). They had always said that the installation would be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and if needed would go till Thursday. On the day of instillation the installer told me that he usually works with his son, who was on vacation, so he was alone. I told him it was my expectation and understanding that the job be finished by Wednesday. Of course I’m sure he called and told the store this. The next morning, (Tuesday at 10:00am) instead of getting a call from the salesman or manager, a receptionist (out of the blue) called me and told me that the job would not be finished until Thursday. I said this was unacceptable, made a horrible fuss — and of course the job was finished by Wednesday. You go to smaller companies to get better customer service and sales staff who take an interest, not so with Main Floor Covering Carpet One. For the service I received I should just have gone to Lowes or Home Depot, I would probably have paid less and would have had much less aggravation. The sad thing is the flooring looks wonderful and the installation was great, but it simply was just not worth the aggravation from them. Services problems with this place are echoed in other reviews, which I should have read beforehand,

My husband and I were interested in removing our existing carpet and replacing it with wood flooring. We contacted this company for a quote and a rep came out and measured right away. We went into the store and spoke to a salesman and made a decision on floor type and color. The salesman bragged about the family owned business being around for years and that their reputation meant everything to them. The salesman said he would contact us via email with a quote in a couple days. Well 5 days passed and we heard nothing. My husband contacted them again by phone and they assured him he would have the quote the same day and again nothing. The customer service here stinks and I’m glad we found out before we went any further. Giving this company a one star review is extremely too generous!

This is a difficult review. Mostly because I do not know where to start as the process with this company was both frustrating, and acceptable. However the frustrating aspects are pushing me towards not recommending this company. We stopped in to look at carpet. Scott (owner) was there, he seemed fairly decent, albeit a bit pushy. I wrote the book on sales techniques, including how they use mind manipulation. He pushed us into what he wanted, which ironically, was also what we wanted so I didn’t put up too much of a fight. The problems started when he promised to leave a sample with us overnight. Instead he took the sample from our home, despite my wife not being there to see it — she was pretty furious at this broken promise.
I repeatedly asked him if he factored certain areas of our home for carpet. He assured me he did. The next day I called to ensure ‘everyone’ there was on the same page about the places I wanted covered — they were. (or so they said) We were promised installation on Saturday to fit our schedules. So far up to this point things were ‘acceptable’ despite the carpet sample issue. The installers arrived that Saturday. We did have additional furniture to move. Unfortunately the moving people didn’t come to take away the old stuff we were replacing. My intention was to purchase coffee and donuts for the installers, and tip them for the sofa and chair they would have to move. Instead, they called and complained to Scott, who promptly informed us ‘additional’ charges would apply. Apparently it costs $ 10.00 a minute for these installers to move a sofa? Fine. No tip, no coffee, no donuts. Now the owner makes the money, not the installers. No problem.
Bad attitudes were plentiful with these installers. Angry faces weren’t the only thing to betray their anger, the body language, and talking were the best indicators. When you show up to service someones home you usually introduce yourself, then shake their hand. These guys have ZERO manners… I don’t like angry people in my home, so this was pretty uncomfortable. Then the country music started blasting… One of them turned on loud country music, overshadowing the TV program we were watching in the other room, again, lack of class and respect. But I would tolerate that as long as the job was done properly, but would it? Unfortunately, as I expected — they didn’t carpet some of the stairs, when I specifically asked Scott and his team — THREE TIMES if they factored the stairs! Now this whole thing started to annoy me…
I have security cameras everywhere inside/​outside of my home. During the installation I noticed one of them took a perfect rug-​shaped piece of the carpet I PAID FOR and hid it in their truck, and I kept this in the back of my mind. After the job was done, I asked if there were any ‘scraps’, and they told me there was a piece in the closet. I specifically asked if that was the only scraps, and I was told yes, it was. I followed them out to the van, and said ‘I will take the rug shaped scrap hidden in your van.”. The installer gave me a dirty look, paused, opened his van, and handed me the piece. Without cameras, I’d of never known, and would have missed a wonderful piece of carpet to use as a rug in the basement. They wanted ‘full payment’ for the job, despite not carpeting the stairs saying they would deduct $ 100 until it’s done. I’m not dumb — what’s the chance of seeing them come back to finish the job with only $ 100 in escrow? So instead I made up an excuse about not having the credit card to finish the payment. They seemed frustrated, but I said if it was only 3 – 4 days to finish it why does it matter if they get have to wait for the other half? Hehe. They left feeling angrier than the angry guys they already are, and I felt pretty good at that point about not letting anyone push me around.
After they left I inspected the job. Clearly they were too lazy to ‘move’ cables to vacuum up pieces. In fact they were pretty sloppy, and I had to immediately vacuum the entire carpeted areas, and removed a full bag of fibers. (see pictures) Upon further inspection I found ‘sloppy’ work in many spots. These guys don’t properly push and tuck carpet, in some spots there were ¾inch gaps between the carpet and wall! Sloppy. (see pictures) I guess I didn’t expect much more from these guys to be honest. So I called Scott to tell him. He came out that night, and walked in and said «Wheres the sloppy work?». He didn’t even look closer at it, and said ‘I will have them re-​tuck it later.”. I said «I like the job overall but…» then he cut off and said ‘of course you do!”. Wow can you be any more arrogant? My wife was appauled at his arrogance, and seemingly uncaring, or unlistening attitude. If you notice other reviews here you will find ‘dismissal’ of customer concerns to be how this place does business.
Why the 2 stars? The carpet is gorgeous, and very high quality. Everything else was pretty lousy. I’d never use this place again.

Sales people helpful but not overbearing.
Selection was plentiful.
Cost was reasonable, slightly on the higher end.
Helpful with scheduling.
Installation was quick, efficient, and expertly done.
We are satisfied with the service we received.

Vast selection, reasonable prices, helpful staff, excellent installation. Impressive store to deal with.

I would not, in any way, ever use service from Carpet 1 Royal Oak again. It was nothing but frustrating from the moment we started the process. They called over and over to re-​ask us for information that we had been incredibly clear about (including color selection, what parts of the house we wanted done). The communication between the employees is awful and we would receive multiple calls from different people with no consistency. When the installer finally arrived, the carpet had been measured incorrectly (despite having someone come to measure twice) and we had to reschedule the installation entirely. When I asked to speak to the manager about our difficulties, he was short and abrupt with me and explained his point of view on what had gone wrong instead of listening to my perception. He blamed the installer over and over, when my real frustration was with the whole process up to that point. When I told him the installer had actually been the most positive part of the process, he practically yelled at me. When we then asked for the «incompetence discount,» he told me he would get back to me the next day. I requested that he call a different number than we had previously provided, so he took it down and, of course, he called the other number. When I called back, he yelled at me again, because they HAD called me when stated– though it was at the wrong number. I was, by the way, entirely polite through this whole process in hopes of getting some money back for the time and effort this cost us. The only reason I am giving a 2 here is that the carpet quality is nice and the final product is fine. I hear the carpet place in Berkley provides quality cheaper services though.

This is a really nice store with excellent service. They recently had to restretch carpet that was laid 4 years ago. The service man came when he said he would and made sure that I was happy before he left.

My wife and I went to Main Floor Covering to pick out a floor made of Marmoleum (actual linoleum, what many of us had growing up in the 50’s and 60’s). They had a good selection of what we were looking for and the staff was knowledgeable and helpful. They also have installers trained to install sheet linoleum (not that easy to find). As a result, we’ve decided to buy our floor from Main Floor.
