I’m picky about who cuts my hair because it’s thick, dense, grows FAST, and will quickly turn into an out of control situation if I don’t manage it and it’s not cut properly.
MICHELLE is the best — she is fast, personable, responsive and open to ideas and suggestions. Most importantly: she understands hair — how it grows, how it behaves, and what to do about it!
I moved to the Chicago suburbs from Tampa, FL where I went to a progressive salon for years to get my hair cut and it was important that I found a place up here that could do more than cookie cutter fantastic sams haircuts.
After lots of Googling I settled on Rockstar Salon — when I made the phone call for the my first appointment, the receptionist knew exactly who to send me to after I described what I wanted in a hair cut. I can’t stress enough how great it is when a salon has its own culture of stylists, and receptionists who can recognize which stylists are best equipped to meet the needs per client.
This place is also really clean, with a sleek, modern atmosphere, and friendly staff. Michelle hits it out of the park for me. If you’re looking for a new place, check this place out.

Yesterday was my first time here and it was an amazing experience! Everyone was so nice! I have never been to a nicer salon before and I will definitely come back! The shampoo girl was great and very gentile, Cindy cut my hair and did an amazing job my hair hasn’t looked this good in years! Thank you!

I’m really torn with this review.
I like Rockstar. The salon is really cool-​looking and welcoming, it was very easy to get a last-​minute reservation, their washing stations have a comfortable shelf for your head to rest on, and the products they use smell and work great. The haircut I received was pretty decent; not fantastic, but pretty good for the suburbs, and the price was alright. Also, my hair stylist was very friendly and seemed to have the banter thing down pat (or maybe we just «clicked», I don’t know).
That said, I would prefer to give my money to a local independent business that supports events in their community. I don’t mean monetarily; I just mean allowing people who are throwing independent events in their area to post flyers in their window. Their policy certainly isn’t «rockstar» and I hope they consider changing it. Until they do, though, I think I will try other salons.

I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to get around to writing this since I’ve been going to Rockstar for 2 or more years now.
I go to Michael and I have nothing but complete confidence in everything he does. He is a master of his craft and just about the nicest and most energetic person you could meet. It is a treat to sit in his chair and by the time he’s done I feel like I’ve had a mini-​makeover and added bounce in my step.
I’ve not had any coloring done or any other treatments so I cannot comment to that fact. What I can say is the staff has always been pleasant to me and I always enjoy my time there.

I love this place! My hairstylist is awesome! Jen has made my hair go from boring and just ugly to wonderful. I have really thin hair and she understood my concerns and cut my hair in a way that it grows in nicely while looking full. So far so good, I love how it looks even when I don’t style it.

I was crossing my fingers that this would be my new salon, but unfortunately I won’t be back.
Shall I start from the beginning?
Searched for a good week on Unilocal looking for a new salon. My old hairstylist wasn’t cutting it and the search for a new one became so exhausting. I couldn’t go another day without a haircut so even though this was an almost 2 hour drive in traffic, I bit the bullet and made a same day appointment at Rockstar.
I chose Rockstar because of the reviews, price ($ 40 haircuts! woohoo!!!) and the fact that they don’t charge to blow-​dry. (Eff places like that)! I didn’t care that it was so far away, for me, finding a permanent stylist would be worth all the bs. The reason why I committed to coming here was because the receptionist (blonde girl) was so sweet and friendly on the phone and completely put me at ease.
I met with my stylist who was very friendly, down to earth, and she oozed confidence. Like someone else said, she does look very young, but I felt 100% confident.
I showed her some pictures, and really thought we were on the same page. The blow out took an eternity and she couldn’t get my bangs like the picture but it wasn’t the end of the world. Before she started I showed her a picture of how I don’t want my hair, but to be frank, that exactly how it came out. I was also looking to get my hair colored and she told me that the salon is compartmentalized! Meaning, the person who cuts your hair doesn’t color or do anything else. Not going to lie, I was a little alarmed but I thought, haircuts are her strongpoint, this is going to be the best haircut i’ve ever had!
I’m used to leaving hair salons disappointed. This was no exception. For most people. when you leave a salon you can’t wait to go out, but like I mentioned, the way my hair was styled left me more embarrassed than anything else.
Fast forward to today: Im sitting in traffic and I part my hair & check myself out in the rear view mirror and OMG my hair is completely uneven. Im talking hack job uneven. How did I miss this!?! How did she miss this!?! :(I’ve never EVER had uneven-​ness be an issue with a haircut. I thought that stuff only happened on TV. I was MORTIFIED. I’ve been walking around for a week like this?!?
As soon as I got home, I grab a mirror and check out the back of my hair (She did not show me the back at the salon, and I never thought to look when i got home.) and its a totally hack job. Even the people at super cuts know how to cut hair evenly.
I know this sounds harsh but like everyone else I expect people who work in a salon to be well trained. I want to get what I pay for. This visit wasn’t worth the $ 50 or the 3 ½ hours roundtrip.

Very like the services, they are accommodating and reasonably priced. The stylists are such a pleasure– especially Kim and Lisa for manicures and pedicures! When I’m town, I always stop in.

I’ve been wanting a change for awhile now (specifically in hair color) but have been hesitant because I have thick, dark hair. However, I’m very pleased with the results after my trip to rockstar.
My colorist gave me the ombré partial highlights I wanted without me even having to show her a picture. She pretty much suggested what I wanted for myself so it was comforting knowing we had the same ideas in mind.
Meanwhile, my hair stylist delivered on her promise of trimming my ends but keeping my length, which I’ve never had before! I usually end up with more cut than I’d like but she did a great job just refreshing my hair.
Overall, I’m happy with my hair and will definitely be back for the great service. I’m so glad I decided to keep my length and get some new color vs chopping it all off and starting over.

PRO’S: I first wandered into Rockstar when a friend of mine gave me a gift certificate here. It was an awesome promotion with multiple coupons for different services. I got my hair cut, colored and styled and I loved it. While the only reason I first walked in was because of the coupon, afterwards, I decided this was my new salon! I went back several times and the salon was always sure to book me with the same colorist and the same stylist. It was a bit expensive, but with how good my experiences were, I had to keep going back!
Until…
CON’S: Without any nervous bones in my body, I scheduled an appointment several weeks before my wedding day. I was completely confident that everything would be fine, because I was having the same thing done, by the same people that I’ve worked with for years at this point. When I got home, I realized that there was literally a chunk of dye that hadn’t blended in my hair. I waited a few days (like I always do) before washing, hoping it’d blend. It was very noticeable. I called Rockstar, they apologized, and got me back in immediately. I went in, and the new colorist said that not only was that wrong, but I didn’t see a few other mistakes. She «corrected» them, then I got my hair washed out. I was then rudely told to blow-​dry my own hair, and then realized that it wasn’t fixed!!! I had to have it re-​fixed AGAIN when it was finally chunk-​free.
I spent three hours the first time, and three hours the second time I visited the salon — six hours for something to be right. No apology for my time, no discount off my next stop, not even a «sorry» as I walked out the door. I couldn’t have been more disappointed after all the times I had been here before.
I will never go back and do not recommend them that for that reason. All my previous experiences were great but the lack of customer service and ability to fix an obvious mistake made my last appointment the final one.

Came in for touch up on my blonde hair with Alyssa. She was awesome! Gave me the blonde look I wanted, sometimes salons just don’t get the right shade, if you are blonde you understand! Love the salon décor, it is a relaxing environment. The staff is all very friendly as well, will be back!

Unilocal always comes through for me when it comes to choosing a restaurant, oil change, shopping, and a hair salon. I had finally grown tired of my hair after it had been cut by pivot point. There was just no life to it and I hated looking at myself in the mirror and seeing this lifeless bed of hair just hanging on my head. At the time Pivot Point cut my hair, I was satisfied with it and their service was awesome.
I decided to go a different route and chose to go to a more professional salon with more and recent reviews. I came across Rockstar Salon & Spa and read the more recent reviews. When looking to read reviews on Unilocal for a hair salon, there is one important factor to look at and that is how recent are the reviews? Hairstylists come and go and who ever had their hair cut last year and Unilocaled it, may not be at the salon anymore and moved on to bigger and better salons. So, the person who had a great experience and cut from one salon by a hairstylist, may not get the same one a year later because it was from a different stylist who may not have that same magic with their hands and scissors.
My hairstylist was Kayla. After she introduced herself I was a little apprehensive because of how young she looked. This is a classic example of don’t judge a book by it’s cover. After she had me sit down, she started asking me questions on how I want my hair to look. I have watched Tabitha’s Take Over and she has mentioned many times over in the show how important the initial consultation is. Ask the right questions and get all the information you need so that the person gets the haircut he/​she wants. Kayla was very thorough in this part and I was happy that she understood what I was looking for.
It was time for the shampoo. Most of the time, when a hairstylist shampoos and conditions my hair they’re very rough and the sinks are uncomfortable. I typically hate this part of the haircut experience. Boy was I wrong? After I placed my head on the sink, I didn’t feel any discomfort, Kayla was gentle and firm with my head, and I didn’t want to leave the sink. I wanted her to keep washing my hair. It felt really great.
During the cut, there was conversation but it wasn’t overpowering like most of my haircuts. I believe just enough conversation is good but too much can take away from the focus and mistakes tend to happen. The conversations I had with Kayla was mostly after she had cut the hair and started blow drying and styling.
While she was blow drying my hair, she knew how close to have the blow dryer on my head, hair, and scalp. She did not burn me once at all. I have had that experience and am very glad it wasn’t the case here. After my hair was blow dried, it looked awesome. She asked me if I wanted her to style it a little more to lessen the thickness. I have a really thick set of hair and I love that. I didn’t think it needed it, but I figured it wouldn’t be too bad to do. After she was done, it looked better than without it.
When all was said and done, my hair was phenomenal. The total cost to my new hair: consultation, shampoo/​condition, cut, blow dry, style, and tip was $ 50.00. God blessed me today by introducing me to a great hairstylist. I have found my hairdresser in Illinois. A word to Kayla, if ever you decide to go to another Salon please make sure to communicate where you go so we can all follow you. Thanks for a great experience Kayla and Rockstar Salon & Spa.

Scene: Day before my sister’s wedding. Sitting at my desk wondering how I am going to look decent because a) I don’t wear makeup, b) I don’t do my hair, and c) my hairdresser/​cosmetologist sister is helping the bride and everyone else.
After researching some salons in the area, (and by «research», I mean Unilocaling), I found Rockstar Salon. It seemed to have everything I needed: An appointment, an updo specialist, fake eyelashes and eyeliner, and a rockin’ black décor to boot.
I got an appointment with Nicole and she was great. I had no idea what I wanted and was totally «that guy» who sits in the chair and says «I don’t know… up, down, half up and half down, braids, buns, whatever…», you know, NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. She ended up giving me a side-​parted braid and bun combo that looked really cute. It also stayed all night (through windy pictures outside, horrible robot renditions, jumping up and down like an idiot, etc.) She also gave me some sweet lashes complete with eyeliner because I don’t know how to do that stuff. I’ve got to say… I almost looked like a lady. It was nice.
If I ever find myself needing a hairdresser besides my sis, this is definitely the place I will be frequenting.

I wasn’t happy with a haircut I got from a budget hair salon and went to Rockstar to get it fixed. Michelle did exactly what I asked; to thin out the bottom portion of my hair and to add more layers. She’s a senior stylist so it cost an extra $ 5 (total $ 50 for a wash and cut) but I didn’t mind the extra charge at all. I walked out of the salon with a great cut and a complimentary styling.

I have been here twice for a haircut.
Note — I have very fragile hair (breaks right off!) and sensitive skin.
1^st visit was def 4 stars — the shampoo girl was so gentle, and was very nice as well. The sinks have awesome headrests in them. ahhhhhh.
My haircut was exactly what I wanted. The stylist definitely had mad skills, my only complaint was that the stylist talked too much for my taste.
I enjoy chatting/​small talk — but this was yackity yackity yackity.
I dunno but getting your hair done should be kind of relaxing — yes ?
2^nd visit was 3 stars — no shampoo girl so the stylist washed my hair. When done, the stylist wrung my hair out so hard it hurt, and then wrapped my hair in a towel so tightly I thought I’d be bald when we pulled it off. (I quickly loosened the towel).
Into the chair — stylist sprayed a good amount of product in my hair (fine with me, cuz I need it!) but during the cut, kept combing my hair onto my face & leaving it there. I had to keep brushing this wet clump of product-​soaked hair off my face.
Sure enough, within 2 days I had a breakout on my face.
This stylist is VERY talented though, so I may just go back & suck it up, heh heh
BEAUTIFUL DECOR!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE. I wish they could come do my house :)

I’ve been looking for a new salon for a while and I’ve found a little piece of hair heaven.
The shampoo girls are amazing! I seriously just want to go there daily just to have them wash my hair. The mini head massage is so relaxing and the shampoo smells great.
I’ve been here a handful of times and have always gone to Michelle to cut my hair. Every picture i’ve brought in to her, she has definitely been able to replicate it. I’ve never been disappointed. She is great to talk to and there’s never a dull moment when you’re in her chair. I love how she styles my hair every time I see her and I swear my hair could last that way forever with the products she uses.
I’ve only gotten my hair cut the few times I’ve been there, but will be sampling the other serives in the near future.

I recently visited Rockstar Salon & Spa with a Living Social voucher. My sister and I purchased identical vouchers, and we had waited 2 months for Swedish Massage and Facial/​Microdermabrasion appointments.
This was my first time at the salon, and upon walking in, the first thing I noticed was how awesome the décor was! The walls, the chairs, the chandeliers, the throw pillows… everything was super cute and it looked like no detail had been overlooked.
However, things started to go downhill after that, when the massage therapist was OVER AN HOUR late for my 8 AM appointment. I understand that it was early, and I would not have been too upset if she had been 15, 20, or maybe even 30 minutes late. But, an hour was just excessive and really unprofessional… as the customer, I made sure to be on time for my appointment, and I would expect the same courtesy from the professional. Because of this situation we had to shuffle our appointments around, and we finished our scheduled services much later than originally planned.
On the plus side, the woman at the front desk (manager or owner?) was apologetic and offered us additional services to make up for our inconvenience. I really appreciated her effort to remedy the situation, but I still would have preferred for my appointment to start on time.
As far as services go, I was not impressed with the Swedish massage anyways. The aesthetician who performed my facial and microdermabrasion was very friendly, but the facial was pretty standard and nothing exceptional. However, I was happy with the complimentary manicure that I received because of my inconvenience.
I probably would not go back here, but my experience could have been a fluke. I did not get any services done to my hair, but the stylists seemed pretty good, so maybe it’s a great place for hair!

After years of searching for a Salon that I love, a colorist that is phenominal, a stylist that is fantastic, and an esthetician that is wonderful… I finally found it! ROCKSTAR Salon & Spa.
I have been to Rockstar three times and I love it. I actually drive an hour to get there, which I am willing to do for the job that they do. First, when you walk in, it is very Rockstar Chic, Red walls, Black Chandeliers, Aniamal print fabric chairs, and what I call a coffee bar near the front desk. I usually wait on the leather couch surrounded by pillows.
First, I see Aneta, she is so nice, she does my eyebrows, always a great job-​very relaxing room.
Then I am off with Megan, my colorist. We talk a little to find out what I am looking to do, and she gets it! he always offers me coffee or water and bring me magazine to look at while I process. I usually do partial low lights &high lights.
Next to the shampoo girls, always a great job & I love the mini head massage that they give while washing my hair ~it always relaxes me.
Next, off to see Michael (I used to see a different girl, she is no longer there). Michael and I talked a lot, great conversation! I have very thick, long hair, no one ever seems to layer it correctly! HE DID! He explained to me why he layers that way & I agreed on the technique-​it has taken me over 10 years to find someone to do my layers this way!
I am always happy when I leave here, while it can be a bit pricy and a bit of a long drive for me~it is definatley worth it to me and I will keep coming to ROCKSTAR!

I had a good experience at Rockstar. I had the Groupon for the facial/​massage/​mani-​pedi package. The salon is conveniently located at the end of a strip mall right off Irving Park and across the Metra station.
The vibe is upbeat and the décor is somewhat edgy. Overall, the place looks clean and new. The salon section is busy and bustling and I was curious how well I will be able to relax during my facial and massage. Fortunately, the spa is in a separate and soundproof section. There are two nicely decorated rooms there for spa services. At no point did I hear the noise from the salon during my facial or massage.
The nail area is located in a corner of the salon right off the shampoo section. It is spacious and bright as well as private at the same time.
The services themselves were overall enjoyable. Aneta did my facial and she was knowledgeable and thorough. What I liked is that she stayed in the room during the entire facial and gave me a shoulder massage while she waited for the mask to dry. I am not sure if I would pay the regular $ 90 for a facial… although, she did do a glycolic peel, which most places charge extra for.
My massage was a head/​neck/​shoulder massage and it was a 30 minute massage. Elisa was the therapist and she used very firm pressure during the entire thing. Overall, I wouldn’t call this a spa massage, it was more of a sports massage than anything else. My back always hurts, though, so it is nice to get a solid massage like that, but this was not the type of a massage that you can relax to. It was a very rushed 30 minutes and the therapist kept bumping into my spine when she was working on the neck. I would not return for a massage.
Lisa did my nails and I thought she was very nice. I don’t get very many pedis, so I cannot say much, but it was definitely a good experience. I would definitely return for another pedi– it was the most relaxing service I received that day. It has been about a month since the pedi and my feet still look nice.

Wow, so many 5 star reviews for this place – I’m sorry to be the party pooper! I really wanted to like Rockstar because they’re so close and seem to have a fun, independent vibe. But to be totally honest, I didn’t have a good experience here, so I can’t recommend them.
I was here for a color and cut. Both of my stylists seemed rather rude and stiff, and I felt pretty uncomfortable because of it. I brought Manic Panic dye because I wanted my highlights to be a certain crazy bright pinkish red, and my colorist refused to use it, saying, «We just prefer to use our own stuff.» She was able to mix up a similar red, thankfully, but as other salons have no problem using dyes I bring, it seemed pretty weird.
I thought the haircut was ok, but my stylist didn’t seem to understand when I asked for a fringe bang. Instead I got a very small bit of a straight bang-​like thing.
It ended up costing $ 170, which is $ 65 more than the prices on the website for a cut and partial highlight. I guess they charged me for having longer hair? And maybe they also charged me for the blow dry? Or they considered it both a partial highlight and a single process? Not sure what happened there. I just know it’s a lot more than I have to pay at Asha for the same services, except at Asha my stylists were friendly and did a fantastic job.
