History

Established in 1971.

I like to help people with local information such as good routes. I am interested in helping with recovery from illness and starting an exercise program that include biking. I do not push competitive riding, rather I’m interested in helping people get started.

Before owning this store, I liked Freewheelers back when it first opened. It was one of the first adult bike stores. At that time, not many adults rode bikes or were interested in bike touring or alternative transportation. This has always been Freewheelers mission. I am a non-driver; never have had a license.

I think that the relation of buyer and seller can be a mutual non-exploitative one, especially in bike stores. Since taking over in 1985, I have tried to embrace this model of commerce. I always respected the original owner’s philosophy of business and the accent on transportation and family riding.

I like to help people with free quick adjustments, which some stores do not permit. Because bikes are assembled in the factory, some large bike shops can just take them out of a box and in less than twenty minutes, sell them to you. But the mass assembling of bikes in factories is poorly done; I re build the important parts from scratch. I tighten wheel spokes so that the wheels last longer and stay rounder. I give you free tuneups for life. I support local musicians on my Facebook page. I enjoy the way that I can make a profit from serving people honestly. The good vibes I put out are returned with interest! When you are a one-person shop, you really see that.
