DancEncounters is a resource for dancers of all kinds. It offers independent teachers a place to teach their own styles in their own way. It provides a venue for students to take classes or private lessons, or to dance socially. DancEncounters offers practice space to dancers of all levels. Our costs are always affordable, and our classes are small so you get the most value for your investment. No contracts, no membership fees; your only commitment is to yourself. No partner needed.

We specialize in Ballroom, Argentine Tango, Swing, Salsa, and Hustle; we currently also have teachers who give classes in Ballet, exercise classes and belly dancing.

History

Established in 1997.

DancEncounters was started in 1997 by Barbara Warren, a longtime dancer and teacher who felt the lack of an affordable, comfortable venue for learning how to dance socially. DancEncounters is a Co-​Op; teachers who wish to teach dance contribute to expenses and upkeep by paying a flat floor fee. All teachers at DancEncounters are independent, and own and run their own businesses. Many of Rochester’s favorite teachers got their start at DancEncounters.

I have been studying dance since I was six years old, and teaching for 20 years. I first studied social dancing at the Fred Astaire Studio in Worcester, MA, then continued studying with several independent teachers. Eventually I quit my job as a lawyer to each dance full time, and opened DancEncounters in 1997.
