For over 30 years, Christopher’s Restaurant & Custom Catering has been serving the Rochester area from its restaurant in the Four Corners area of downtown. Located on the basement of the building, the restaurant features a full bar and a wide variety of food options. I stopped in for lunch to try their«world’s best» shaved steak sandwich. It was a large portion, but otherwise failed to impress. However, I was surprised by the generous portions for their salad options. I would likely return again if I’m looking for some variety for lunch options downtown.

Working downtown has its perks. There are many high-quality, low-priced dining options around four corners that make it fun going out to lunch. Christopher’s is a perfect example. Located in the basement of the Old City Hall Building on West Broad Street, the interior of Christopher’s resembles a classy ‘60s whiskey bar, with its floral, beige wallpaper; curvy, gold chandeliers; dark, mahogany facades with magenta outlines on the ceilings; and their large, square bar that reminds me of the bar in Cheers. Let’s just say if people were allowed to smoke in bars, you would expect to find hordes of people smoking a cigar and drinking Manhattans in Christopher’s. I ordered the Mushroom Burger with Chicken Pastina soup. One thing I like about Christopher’s is the prices. My whole meal was only about six bucks. The bowl of soup wasn’t big, but it contained hearty chunks of carrots and celery, and a generous portion of pastina. The chicken was cooked to perfection – soft, tender, finely shredded and warm. I ordered the burger medium, and it was cooked properly – slightly pink on the inside and juicy. The burger was served on a large, square Kaiser roll with huge slices of iceberg lettuce and tomatoes. Overall, it wasn’t the best burger I’ve ever had but it was certainly pretty good. Christopher’s is a fun, comfortable, relatively inexpensive place to go for lunch downtown. Good service, old-fashioned but classy atmosphere, decent food and reasonable prices. Hard not to give Christopher’s anything less than four stars.
