Absolute price gauger, showed up late, very unprofessional and cocky. Acted as if he was the only plumber. No thanks

We were looking for a plumber to modify a gas pipe and later to install a dishwasher. We found Hayes Plumbing through Home Advisor. When they found that we were also installing an over-​the-​range microwave, they bid on the job, as they have both a plumbing license and a general contracting license. We accepted the bid because we wanted to get all the appliances in the same day and they were available. They came out and installed the dishwasher, and also moved a gas range into position and attached the gas pipe while they were doing it. (We had hired them earlier to modify the gas piping. They did not do a full install with the anti-​tip bracket, etc.) The problems began when they attempted to install the over-​the-​range microwave. First, they put the bracket too high because they didn’t notice there was a lip on the bottom of the cabinet, so they didn’t measure properly. They just put the template up and started drilling holes. As a result, they had to remove the bracket and re-​drill the holes, resulting in two of the holes being about 1 ¼ «long. Then they installed the microwave, which was even with the bottom of the cupboard. They looked at it and said it „looked too low.“ THEN they measured the distance from the counter top to the bottom of the microwave and said there wasn’t enough clearance. They said it was supposed to be 20″ and it was „only“ 17 ½.» At this point, I mentioned that I come from a family of contractors, and where I come from, people measure BEFORE they start the job. The installer made some smart remark to the effect that I should have noticed the problem myself if I knew so much about contracting. I said I’m not a contractor and I don’t know the building codes — that’s why I hired a licensed contractor. I just know that he should have measured everything before he started drilling. (The REAL KICKER here is that he’d asked me to email him the make and model number ahead of the install, so he could check the specifications! Why, if he wasn’t going to measure anything anyway)? Anyway, he ended up taking the microwave down, and left a big mess on the wall, with screw holes and marks all over our new wallboard. And then he let us know that he expected to be paid the full installation fee of $ 275, even though it WASN’T installed, he’d screwed up by not measuring first, and he’d completely messed up our new wall. THEN he told us that after we had our cabinets modified, he would «cut us a break» and reinstall it for «only» another $ 100. After he left, we read the installation guide. It gave six specific requirements for various clearances, but nowhere did it say there had to be 20″ between the bottom of the microwave and the cooking surface. We checked the code online, and found references to 18″ clearance in that area, but in several discussion threads, actual inspectors even said that 17 ½″ was close enough, if all the other numbers were correct. We contacted the cabinet manufacturer, who said that the 20″ or more the installer was recommending was dangerously high for an over-​range-​microwave. So we called the general contractor we usually use and asked him about the situation and he said 17 ½″ to 18″ is fine — essentially just even with the bottom of the adjacent cupboards — which is what everyone in the online discussion threads we had read was saying. Needless to say, we’re having another contractor install the microwave.
