1930’s diner with homemade pies and puddings

History

Established in 1932.

The Riverhead Diner & Grill opened October 29, 1932 on Main Street

in Riverhead, NY. John Moustaka was the original owner and then sold the business to two brothers, Joseph & Frank Strebel. Joe’s daughter Liz bought the business in 1973 and leased it out in 1999. In August 2010, she got it back and restored it to its original, clean diner style.

Meet the Business Owner

Liz S.

Business Owner

Liz started working in the Riverhead Diner in 1966 and was joined by her sisters, Josie, Tootsie and Betty. They worked for their Dad and Uncle Frank. It was a fun place to work. Many cousins and relatives worked there too. Liz has a picture in the book «Hometown Diners» published just before she sold the business in 1999. Also, there is a story about the diner in the book, «The American Diner» which came out the same year.
