Sugar & Twine is a great oasis for iced tea & a pastry on a hot day or after strolling along Carytown.

Just tried this spot on a whim for a takeout lunch. I got the mushroom & fontina sandwich, which was super flavorful! It was served on focaccia. Perfection! To my delight, they also tucked a surprise chocolate chip and sea salt cookie into my box! I wanted to try one of those, but I was trying to «be good» and make healthy choices. I can’t say I’m mad that they foiled that plan. That cookie was also perfect! I ordered an ice coffee, which was good. Not at all bitter or watered down. Both ladies at the counter were helpful and gracious, and the environment is lovely! They did a beautiful job renovating that space. What a treat!

Super cute coffee shop in Carytown. I love loved the feeling when we walked in. We didn’t try any of the food, but we got coffee to go. I got a large iced coffee and my mother just got a regular coffee. My iced coffee had the after taste of milk — I know it sounds crazy and I can’t explain it. Both coffees weren’t very good. We ended up stopping at the first Starbucks we saw and throwing them out. I have two stars instead of one to be fair since it looked like a great shop and we only tried the coffee.

Ordered a coffe and said«thank you» when I got it. Absolutely no response just walked away. Guess this state people have no manners either. Then you got people smoking right outside the door. Do you think people want smoke in their face going in and out of a coffee shop? Just another expensive disgusting coffee. I don’t even like Starbucks but at least I can go there and get consistent coffe, encounter people with manners, and not smell like smoke

This spot has long been a coffee shop(previously Capitol Coffee) but it recently underwent a reboot. The new incarnation, Sugar and Twine, is great. Friendly staff, contemporary décor, and delicious breakfast sandwiches. Been making it my regular weekend get-work-done spot for a few weeks now. I recommend.

I’ve never been so emotional about a coffee shop, I mean why would I be? Walked in here because it was next to where my best friends and I were going to have dinner, but since there was a wait, i strolled in. This café is so cute yet modern with very simple décor. So here’s my story. I came in and was suggested an Almond Joy by this super sweet barista. Before she spoke to me, she served a homeless man named, George. She gave him a cup of water and asked if he was doing well. The relationship was so genuine and warmed my heart so I offered to buy him a baked good. She said that he does not speak but often comes in and asks for water. He smiled and quietly pointed to the blueberry bread. The barista said, he often looks hungry but doesn’t demand anything besides water. I asked her to ring up another order of baked goods for tomorrow so he could have something to eat when he comes in. One thing he made me appreciate was how blessed I am to live the life I have. Something so simple like food, could warm someone’s heart so much and no value of money could ever repay the gratitude he gave me with silence and a prolonged smile. My Almond Joy: amazing! Their espresso isn’t strong so it’s just what I like! It was the perfect temperature and tasted so delicate… so I’m a happy camper. My favorite place in Richmond

Nice places, a little $$ for what you get but very nice addition to the area — service was great and friendly — get their early on weekends!

This place is a great addition to Carytown! I would call it an elevated café with pastries to fulfill all your desires. They have everything from plain croissants, to muffins, and pies, brownies and cookies and everything in between. Although their quantity is small, their selection is vast. We decided to get some sort of muffin/hybrid pastry with a raspberry cream cheese topping. It was light, delicious, with a hint of cream cheese(I wish there was more of it). We also got an iced Thai coffee which was really refreshing and reminded me a lot of the traditional Vietnamese coffee(Cà phê sua đa). Prices were reasonable and the quality of the food/drinks were great. This seems like a great spot to chill or do some homework or whatever else you have going on. If you’re in carytown and want a snack or a drink, go give these guys a try!

Just a great spot where you feel comfortable the minute you walk in. SUCH an improvement over the last incarnation of this building, a scuzzy coffee shop where none of the staff ever looked happy and there was always a dirty film over everything. Everything clean, modern, and shipshape in S&T and I actually hated leaving. Big points for coolest mugs on the planet. Only had coffee, which was good, can’t wait to go back and try some baked goodies. And I really dig the 50% off baked goods at the front. Why the discount? They were baked yesterday. Who cares? I ate pizza out of a dumpster in my college days so no problem. Great staff, the young gent behind the counter today couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful. Make a day of it with lunch at Don’t Look Back, a good browse through Chop Suey Books, then head across the street for coffee and dessert at S&T. Great time.

Great coffee and plenty of sweet treats. They even have a few dairy free baked goods(try the chocolate chip cookie or the muffins!) The shop itself is really cute and has a lot of seating. Good vibe overall.

I work right around the corner from this gem and am so happy with the change of hands and direction this coffee shop has gone! They have great flavored coffees, iced coffees and treats! I just had a vegan chocolate chip cookie and I’m not even sure what makes it vegan but it was one of the best cookies I’ve had in a while. I also die over their Chocolate chip sea salt cookies. Totally worth the calories ;)

Sugar & Twine captures the essence of quintessential Carytown. It is at once trendy and bland, the products are overpriced and the consumers have too much money to spend. At around 3pm on a weekday this place is poppin’ full of hipsters, youngsters and underemployed. The counterperson’s empty glare expresses annoyance with the general existence of all things. I order a small latte with almond milk. With the extra $ 0.75 for generic almond milk, the cost comes out to $ 5 and some change. I watch the counterperson add half a shot of espresso to a cup almost entirely full of musty almond milk. The thimble of stale espresso serves only to add color. Don’t go here.

This is a great addition to Carytown and an awesome place to grab a baked treat. Came to give this place a try recently with my friend. The interior of the place is nicely laid out and has plenty of places to sit, both with regular tables and a bar-like setup on the other side. I was greeted warmly right away after approaching the counter and Caitlin was happy to help us with our order. I also had a chance to interact briefly with Beth, the owner. She certainly put a great deal of thought into the setup of her bakery and is just as creative with her smörgåsbord of pastry offerings. I had their unique oreo-styled cookie and it was delicious, not too sweet but with just the right consistency. They have something for everyone here, with«vegan bombs», croissants, and blackberry biscuits galore. I will definitely be returning in the near future to try some of the other items here(including the sandwiches!), and with free Wi-Fi this would be a great place to set myself up to do some work if I want to get away from my place or campus for a while. Looking forward to my next trip here! Overall: 5.0 stars — — — — — - Pros: — Great customer service by Caitlin and by Beth, the owner. — Warm and inviting interior and seating. — Their pastries are delicious and very unique. — Parking can be had nearby at one of Carytown’s several lots/garages. Cons: — None, really. If I discover any of my future trips here, I’ll be sure to update this review!

My favorite thing about this place is the handmade mugs, they definitely add to the atmosphere of this cute café. I have yet to try the pastry selection yet but from the looks of it it may be hazardous to my health if i do dive in because they look delectable! The coffee is perfection and the service is pretty good. I had a sausage egg and cheese croissant that was a delicious buttery flaky breakfast perfection.

I had an excellent dirty chai here and loved the atmosphere. It was crowded on a Sunday morning, but my friend and I were able to squeeze in on the bar stools. Barista came around and passed out free sample to everyone the a delicious barley and fig cake treat. Can’t go wrong!

If, like me, you’re a coffee addict this place is awesome. While I am an admitted Starbucks fan, I enjoy trying smaller local coffee shops whenever I can. This place is just that. They serve a wide selection of coffee drinks as well as feature cookies and pastries. I had the salted chocolate chip cookie and I almost died of delight… SERIOUSLYTRYIT!!! They also have sandwiches and more savory items. A nice little gem in Carytown!

Can’t say I loved this place. The croissant was average and the cheese biscuit was downright unpleasant, with a strange, chewy texture and not much cheese flavor. Chocolate chip cookie was serviceable but not special. I thought it was expensive for what it was. Staff was pleasant and space was clean — certainly an improvement on the previous business — but I doubt we’ll be back.

I used to be an avid fan of the previous café in that spot, Capital Coffee, but now I’ll be happy to die with Sugar and Twine coffee running through my veins. The atmosphere of S&T is incredibly refreshingly. It’s a perfect little coffee shop for doing work, meeting with fiends, or reading on your own. I love the bar areas especially! I’m a coffee fanatic and their coffee is some of the best in RVA. I usually like to try something new each time I go and I’ve yet to be disappointed. The baristas have recommended great selections, like a mocha latte with soy milk(it was delicious). Not only is their coffee amazing but their food is as well. The fig and goat cheese panini is delicious and it comes with a cookie! I always get the blackberry biscuit and I recommend it to everyone. If they have them in stock, the Apple hand pies are some of the best I’ve ever had. I’ve only had one bad experience with their food and that was when the croissant I ordered what lacking salt in the dough. But for how often I go to T&S, that was just ONE bad experience. The staff is incredibly friendly and their customer service is top notch. They are all very friendly and welcoming, but one stands out. One of the cashiers(whose name escapes me even though I know it) was friendly enough to fix my necklace! After I mentioned a problem with my necklace, she told me she made jewelry and fixed it right there! I see her often at S&T and she is always an amazing staff member. Thanks again! I LOVE S&T !!!

I am always on the lookout for new cafes to «work from home» at, and this one is amazing! Wonderful atmosphere and friendly staff, it is just the kind of cozy spot where you’d want to spend an afternoon. I had a vanilla latte, which was great, but I had my eye on their amazing selection of baked goods and sandwiches so I will be back!

S&T is a sweet new bakery and coffee shop on Cary near the Byrd. Open, charming space, nice service, and the best piece of pie have eaten in at least five years. Perfect crust, delicious balance. It tasted better than it looked. I’ll be back soon for hot chocolate and cookies! Cheers– H
