Are you in need of some cheap products you’ll only need to use once? Wjether it’s yarn or a pencil or a model kit or craft paint you can’t find elsewhere, you’ll most likely find them here. Despite this stores age, things(including the prices) haven’t changed much in more than 14 – 15 years. It does get a little steamy in this store, because this store is not air conditioned. I don’t go into store that often(because I commonly forget its still in business after the original old owner died when I was a kid in the 1990s), but looking for a few small things a few weeks ago, sure sparked my interest and I decided to try here on a whim. Sure enough, they had what I was looking for!

The Stickle 5& Dime Store is a real throw back to less complicated times. The times when one could go to Main Street to a Mom and Pop shop and find anything and everything he or she needed. Names were known and faces recognized and one could buy things that were made in the good olé USA. Or as they say, «A place where time has stood still!» I happened to notice some yarn in their window so I went in to browse. I was less than enthusiastic about their pedestrian offerings of craft grade yarns. I sighed to myself and someone must have heard my breathy protestations and suggested that if were ISO nice yarn perhaps I should walk to the back of the store. Ok, whaaaatev. OMG!!! The Knitting Garage, stacked with Malabrigo, Manos and Madelinetosh-all my favorite wooly M words! And they also had some non-M ones to like Jill Draper, local yarnista. And an expert yarn slinger, Leah, to assist and advise and to just plain conversate with… ;))) I do not mind being proven wrong sometimes with first impressions(the front of the store’s selection) and this was one of those times. Any knitter would find something in their cubbies brimming with yarns of many shapes, sizes and types. I ended up with some cotton Manos intending to make a summer hat. As soon as I am done with my winter scarves, 2011 – 2012 season, lol! Yeah, one might not expect to find such a treasure in an anachronistic environment like a 5& Dime but yay to them for being there and to the community for supporting them. This song reminds me of skiing in Vail. I would listen to it on the lifts while wearing wooly things to keep me warm. :))) So pretty, like the sun glistening off the white snow in Vail and like a room full of rainbow colored yarn.

Five and dime store? Apparently I’ve engaged the flux capacitor and wound up back in good old 1955. We randomly stopped by and discovered a very quaint and charming shop staffed by some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet They sell a lot of everyday household things and everything is really cheap. That old store smell(old wood, old fabric, old people) really takes you back to a time which is long gone elsewhere, but proudly exists in Rhinebeck.
