Because all work is done by the owner you can count on full accountability and quality from start to finish on every job. A believer in continuing education in his trade, Matt frequently participates in workshops offered through such organizations as the Chimney Safety Institute of America, the Dry Stone Conservancy, and the Preservation Trades Network, and feels fortunate to be able to utilize his knowledge on a daily basis. Matt is great to work with, detail oriented, fairly priced and does great work! He repaired a small retaining wall and extended it by almost 40′ on our new house. All of our neighbors have come up to us saying how great a job he did!

Matt is very conscientious and careful in his work. His prices are fair and his work is thorough. He installed a chimney liner for us and I’m having him back this year to do a sweep and repair/​replace the gasket on the wood stove. I would highly recommend Matt for any chimney/​wood stove work.

Matt was unable to actually service our fireplace since we do not live in the area, but I am writing him a review of excellence because he went out of his way on a weekend to give us free professional advice. We were scammed by another chimney service and seeking a second opinion. Matt took the time to look at photos of our chimney and recommend, to the best of his ability, what we should consider before purchasing any repairs. He could have easily turned us away and ignored our request for help, but he did not. Many thanks Matt!

Matt is wonderful. We have used him to inspect our chimney in our previous home and he inspected and repaired our chimney in our current home. He is prompt, courteous, and professional. In fact he stopped by today because I though I was having a problem with my flume cover. Turned out it was just morning frost that was jamming up the enclosure. We love Matt’s work and are happy to act as a reference for your next chimney and light masonry project.

My front concrete porch steps and brickwork were in need of repair this past spring — some repointing of the bricks and repair of concrete. This was a small project and I was having a difficult time finding a contractor who would do the work (most companies that I contacted had a minimum project size). Thankfully I came in contact with Matt at Hearthstone Chimney and Masonry.
Matt came out to do the estimate when he said he would and completed the work on budget and on the scheduled date. There was a minor issue where I thought a small crack in the concrete hadn’t been filled completely — Matt came right back out to redo that portion. Six months later the work looks great and no issues.

Matt was great to work with! Setting up an appointment was quick and easy. He came when he said he would and efficiently checked our fireplaces and chimneys. We couldn’t recommend Matt any higher if we wanted! He was super easy to get ahold of, very responsive, scheduled for an inspection and cleaning within a reasonable amount of time… all unheard of in this neck of the woods.
Day of, we confirmed the time with Matt — 4pm — and he said he’d be here around then. He was here around 3:30 — which could have been bad had we been coming home at 4 for the appointment but worked out perfectly for us.
He was so friendly, quickly got to work, gave us lots of good info and was on his way. Not to mention the price was INSANELY reasonable!

After having received an outrageously high estimate for chimney sweeping from a local Vienna business, I checked out other services online. As Matt had received multiple five-​star ratings elsewhere, I gave him a shot. He was very fairly priced, efficient, and a joy to deal with. Highly recommend him.
This is an update. During October 2015 I tried multiple times to reach Matt: phone message, email, via Unilocal.No joy. Either he is out of business or otherwise occupied. Hope he returns to the game soon.
