my friend Thuan and I rolled into a small shopping center off Sherman Way. Normally our stop in this area would be Phở 999 |
. | Since we already had our fill of Dim Sum, the main reason for our trek to the valley in the first place was for him to get his haircut. As we approached this shopping center, for no reason what so ever, all of a sudden, I was struck with an overwhelming thirst. I asked my friend about the corner café in the shopping center and he told me to check out what they have. So, I head over. As I enter, I can honestly say, I was the only non-​Vietnamese guy in there. Which was perfectly OK with me. To one table, a group of older gentlemen are gathered around (probably gambling) having a merry old time. There are some other patrons scattered about. A couple of video poker machines and what not. So, I walk up to the gentleman behind the counter. I ask him, what kind of cold drinks they serve. Unfortunately, the gentleman didn’t speak a lick of English. Lucky for me, a patron sitting at the counter, eating a sandwich.mmm.Vietnamese sandwich… asks me in English what I’d like. I told him I wanted a cold drink. So he asks the gentleman behind the counter about what cold drinks they have, and the English speaking gentleman told me they have fresh avocado shakes. Now, I used to scoff at an ex-​GF who told me avocado shakes were the bomb. I used to tell her, only avocado I like, is fresh, or guacamole, no need to drink the dang thing. Since then, I’ve had an avocado shake and honestly, it’s pretty darn good. So, I tell him, I’ll take two (one for my friend and the other for me). At which point the gentleman behind the counter takes out fresh avocados from the fridge and cuts them up, blends them, mixes ice in. They served me the drinks in small cups (I would say 16 oz was pushing it) and it came up to $ 8.00!!! I didn’t want to be rude, so, I paid and went on my way. As soon as I took my first sip, O-​M-​G!!! It was sooo rich, creamy, and refreshing. My only gripe, $ 4?! If I’m ever around this side of the valley and need a quick refreshing drink and not willing to partake in the corporate giants of juice (Jamba, Roebeck’s) this will be a stop. I just hope someone will be there to tell the gentleman behind the counter what I want.
