I was in here about 5 minutes ago, I walk up to the counter and smile at the two people working(A dirty blonde guy and then a dark haired girl that was kind of tan) they just stared at me and rolled their eyes. I continue to smile while I’m trying to decide what to eat and the two workers both whispered something to each other and then continued to give me dirty looks. I was so upset that I just decided to leave without purchasing anything to eat. If you want good customer service go somewhere else, you won’t regret it!

I have to upgrade my review. Being from Hawaii, it’s always tough to accept anything other than your favorite places back home as da best, but I have been away so long that L&L pulled a five star today. The Katsu was white meat chicken, the Kalua pig was great. Listening to the Hawaiian rasta just makes me want to head down to the beach now. As I always say, calibrated for Reno, this is da kine… Onolicious grinds for Northern Nevada.

Always delivers– a little taste of Hawaii. Prices are reasonable and restaurant is clean. Love the BBQMIXPLATE. Enough to share. Can get crowded and take a while so be prepared during more regular hours.

This L&L sucks compared to the one that was in South Reno. The workers are rude. The food takes a long time to come out and sometimes it’s not cooked right. Last time I ordered the Hawaiian Barbecue as I always do and it was burnt and oily. Don’t come to this one, they also have different owners.

I never had a problem from this place before until about this year and at two different times. I order both the chicken katsu and the bbq platter at the separate time and sadly; both got sick from them both. The chicken wasn’t cooked and the bbq platter was still red on the inside. I don’t think I’ll be going back anytime soon and it saddens me that the both experiences were not good.

I’m originally born and raised in Hawaii and am accustomed to eating«plate lunches» at drive-ins and luaus all the time there, so my friend and I thought we’d give L & L a try. After all, they’ve probably been in business over 10 years at the same location on Mae Anne. First of all, the menu had all the highlights of a Hawaiian meal on it but the portion sizes were small considering the prices. I was expecting the usual the«starch and grease plate with extra salad» as we called it in Hawaii. In Hawaii, we used to joke that they always give you a salad with your rice but it’s macaroni salad and never a green salad. I had the mini laulau which is usually made in Hawaii in a ti leaf bag. Not sure how they cook it here. It consists of spinach, Kahlua(smoked) pork, chicken and butterfish all put together in chunks. It was mediocre but good since its been years since I had one in Hawaii. I also had a small cup of poi for about $ 2. Mainlanders say«poi tastes like library paste» and I guess it does, but I haven’t eaten library paste! it’s made of boiled taro root all ground up into a thick or thin paste.(You can’t eat raw poi or the spicules in the root hurt your mouth). Some people like poi a «day old» or older, which causes it to become thicker and more pungent in flavor and odor– it’s an acquired taste, I guess. I used to get teased at luaus for taking poi cups to eat because I’m a Kama’aina(native) haole(a native white resident of Hawaii) and they thought id waste it. Most Hawaiians figure«mainland folk» to hate poi. They call it either 1,2 or 3 finger poi as to how thick it is. It was normally eaten with your fingers as a scoop. Taro, in Hawaii, Is grown in flooded fields, and because land is so expensive there, poi has become scarce(often grown in Hanalei on Kauai) and demands about $ 7-$ 10 per pound in a frozen bag. L & L had poi today(ask) and it was pretty fresh. Fresh poi(even if frozen and properly reheated) has a sweetness and stickiness to it. I love it. The«plate lunches» came in a small styrofoam sandwich boxes and because some of the meat is a bit fatty, it’s probably all you really need to eat, calorie-wise, but this is a big difference from real Hawaiian«plate lunches». Several big groups were being served from the take-out area at about 11:45am, so it seems to have caught on in the mainland here. They have Spam musubi which consists of a couple of grilled slabs of Spam tied to a block of sticky rice by a band of nori(that black seaweed you get at sushi places). Mmmmm! Yeah, you just gotta give-up your pre-conceived notions about Spam and try it! Also, for dessert, try the haupia it is a rice and coconut dessert. Reminiscent to jello and pudding in consistency though I didn’t try theirs as they had sold-out today. Parking is close-by and there’s ample available parking all over the shopping center. The atmosphere is plain but it’s nice not to see stupid tiki’s and fake palm fronds and trees and parrots(which are not native nor found in large number in the islands except for a few escapees from the pet trade). Service at the take-out window was friendly, courteous and polite and she didn’t rush our decisions. By the way, this 2016, they are holding a drawing in March for a trip to Hawaii. Just sign-up with your receipt, and put it in the jar. Wouldn’t that be a great win! Someone’s gotta win! It’s in the west side of the Mae Anne Shopping complex between Kohl’s and Safeway.(Closer to Safeway).

I heard about a lunch special, so I checked it out today. It’s $ 7.25 for mini meal of BBQ chicken, plus mac salad and rice, plus a drink. It’s a better value, which was needed. It was okay. I wanted Wild Cherry Pepsi, but it was not pouring with syrup and water proportions. I mentioned it, but I don’t think anyone fixed it, or if they did I didn’t hear about it. I also had gravy fries today for $ 2.45, was okay as well.

I am a certified fiend for Hawaiian BBQ, but I’ve always been on the fence about L&L as a chain. I’ve been to a decent spread of locations in Cali and they’ve always been hit or messy miss. The Reno location is pretty solid, and it’s a pretty regular post-church Sunday lunch option for my family. Blessed be their mac salad and katsu. Portions are pretty sizeable, even if you’re coming in starving. The barbecue fare here is decent, but I always find myself going for the katsu because it’s more consistently done well. The beef tends to be a toss up between decent and great and the cue’d chicken is typically always on the mark of satisfying. Katsu never fails to bring a great bite. The poke is a welcome switch-up but is less of a salad like I’m used to eating it and more just a cup full of(pretty fresh!) tuna that makes for a saltier quick app. For a smaller bite of L&L, or even as just a supplementary hit if you’re still hungry for more, I’d highly recommend the musubi. Katsu, bbq, spam: pick your(delicious) poison. Not the best Hawaiian BBQ I’ve had, but definitely one of my favorite quick lunches in Reno that’s tasty and consistent enough to keep me coming back for more. Be sure to check out their bonus menu options — a few filipino options are sprinkled throughout.

Yummy yummy! Love their food so so much. Only reason not 5 stars is because they run out of stuff often and that’s annoying and they get our orders wrong sometimes but they are super nice and apologetic when you point it out. We eat here all the time! :) Edit: down from 5 stars because they keep running out of curry over and over again even if we drop in earlier before the dinner rush(4:00 or 3:00). This had turned us away around 4 times now.

Not bad. Okay prices but you really DO get a good amount of food. Got BBQ chicken plate. I think it was THREE chicken breasts!!! But they’re served with the skin and/or fat on them, which ruined it for me. No actual BBQ sauce, it was sort of baked in? But tasty. Served with Mac salad and 2 scoops of rice. Hubby got chicken katsu and that was stupid good!!! I would recommend that over the BBQ chicken. Gotta go get chocolate macadamia nuts now, so please excuse my abrupt departure! Lol!!!

This is as close as it gets to being back in Hawai’i. Let’s establish a couple things about my appetite before I review. First of all i’m from Hawai’i so my palate could be cited as being biased. Secondly I’ve been eating L and L for years in Hawaii, Las Vegas, and Reno so I enjoy the chain overall. I really enjoy the Kahlua Pig and Lau Lau. But I’ve tried just about everything. The Lau Lau tasted very yummy and arrived at my table piping hot. The Kahlua Pig was yummy(especially when I paired it with some chili paste and barbeque sauce). I ordered my meal with a scoop of rice and the macaroni salad. I enjoyed my meal overall. Very yummy and a comfort food to me. The service is chill. There’s really not much to it. You pay and order. Then your food is ready and the customer is called up 50% of the time to pick it up themselves(sometimes they will bring the order to the table your are sitting at). It’s a family owned business and both the owners are personable. Once I even asked for my eggs to be basted.(which i’m sure most of you don’t know what that cooking technique is), but they made it. They usually hire cashiers from UNR to support students. Naturally like every establishment there is room for improvement. I personally would like to see more healthy meals come from L and L to represent Hawaiian culture, but that’s just one mans dream.

This has to be the best L&L I have ever been to. Why? #1: The place was rather clean. As soon as people left, the employee ran to the table to clean it. #2: The food was super fresh and piping hot. My BBQ chicken was cooked perfectly. I’ve received overcooked chicken on numerous occasions elsewhere. #3: Although I didn’t order it, they offer tocino which isn’t Hawaiian… but it’s nice that they have that option. #4: The employees were friendly and inviting. Love it. Glad to see there is one out here in Reno.

I ordered a regular chicken katsu(big portion, next time will order a mini for myself) served with 2 scoops of white rice, mac salad. I love the chicken katsu. The Chicken itself was tender, bread crumbs cooked perfectly, smell so yummy, slice very perfect not too thick not too thin. Their mac salad is fantastic flavor, not too creamy with mayo. The Spam egg sandwich was so so, won’t order again, i just can make it at home :) The service was nice, the place is kinda bit small especially if there’s some customers like today. Will try other food next time for sure. And too bad, they were closed in Carson :(
