Hi Point Coffee & Cafe

Hi Point Café is the perfect place to have an easygoing Sunday morning. The environment inside is quirky. Mismatched chairs and tables, a small library of books, and an old piano. Everything seems like it was found at a yard sale and put together in this café, making it seem like every single piece inside has a story. There’s also outside seating, which is nice on a sunny spring or summer morning.
I like that there are specials every Sunday, and I usually try and give them a try. They haven’t disappointed yet! Although if you need a go-​to order when you head to Hi Point, I would suggest the Awful Waffle! Savory and sweet meet to satisfy all your breakfast cravings. And for only $ 10!
Overall, Hi Point Café is a great place to grab a cup of coffee, eat some homey food, and have a relaxing morning.

This was a great find! Came here for an early breakfast and the lady at the counter (possibly the owner) was very friendly and welcoming. The place is filled with odds and end tables and chairs to give it a homey feel. She explained their many coffee and tea concoctions to us and stated that if we didn’t see it on the menu that it could probably still be made. I ordered the medium of a coconut coffee which was way larger than I was anticipating. Tasted great! I can’t remember exactly what plate I ordered but it was very good. The two friends I was with also enjoyed they’re orders. I highly recommend this place, very nice atmosphere and good food.

The chicken cranberry salad on organic greens with raspberry balsamic dressing was so tasty and fresh there was no time to put down my fork and pick up my phone for a photo! My son had the chicken Caprese sandwich which was prepared like a panini and it too was gone in 60 seconds! Not because of a small serving but for flavor, fresh mozzarella, basil and a plentiful side salad. Very cute and casual café for espresso, breky, lunch. Nice peeps too:) Will definitely go back!

Both my hubby and I really enjied this small, off the beaten path café. I loved the quiche, and he loved the California Scramble. I totally like getting fruit and a small muffin or scone that comes with your order. Will for sure be back.

I stopped in because I heard they have have good quiche and I love quiche. There were two choices available today so i chise the meat (turkey, pestso, spinach, onion pesto) the other ootion was veggie which i would have orderd but there is mushrooms (which desperately do not like)
When I got my order it was the Veggie. I asked the owner? Who delivered it to me if there was mushrroms and she said no. I tried to eat around the mushrooms but couldnt. Too bad other than the mushrooms it was good.
I went to counter and they IMMEDIATLEY made a new meat one (fantastic about getting bew one to me). The meat one is good. Just after eating part of the first one and the fruit and scone that came with it, unfortunately not as hungry any more.
I will probably come back but not on my must do and rush to bring guest here who visit us in reno.

I really like this place. It’s clean, quite and cute hipster like :). The first time I came in I got the eggy bagel and got it with cheddar instead of provolone. I liked it so much that I came back with my girls for breakfast… they all three got the French toast with the berry compote and I again got the eggy bagel. The kids thought the French toast was under done (and it was) but the compote was very good. So if u like French toast crispier then I would just make sure to tell them well done. I really like the atmosphere :) super cute :)

It’s alright. coffee is good I can serve myself that’s great I like to have 3 – 4 cups. The food though is ok sometimes the chef is this young kid with a backwards hat and can’t cook. The onions and potatoes are burnt. I asked for poached eggs and got hard boiled. Disappointing. Also they are always out of ingredients for things and I’ll order something and they’re out of it and order something else and they’re out of it. One time I got the chicken gyro and it was good than the next time I got it just didn’t taste the same at all and I think the sandwich actually made me feel sick. The tables are too close I really don’t want to hear that hipster talk about his goals anymore.

Tl;dr: Regular customer asked to leave because we did not spend enough money.
I am a regular of Hi Point. I checked my Mint account, I have paid with credit card there 32 times since November 2013. That does not include the times that I paid with cash. I arrange to have work meetings there, brag about their scones and bagels, and regularly meet friends there for coffee dates. The weekday morning cashier knows my coffee order and the newer cashier regularly comes over to coo at my infant son. If you include the cash purchases I would guess I have been there closer to 60 times in the last 2 years. I frequently spend multiple weekday hours there, arriving for a late coffee and staying for lunch. I have always felt bad for them, their food is yummy, but I am often one of only a few customers for 2 hours.
This morning (a Sunday) I met a friend there. Together we spent around $ 40 on coffee and breakfast. We sat at one of the large tables as there were 5 of us including our children. We arrived at the same time as 2 other large groups. A family with older children and another family with 11 month old twins. We all chose 3 of the 4 large tables.
Our food took the notoriously long amount of time it always does, something I’ve never dwelled too long on. I had to remind them of my coffee order after our food came. After about 25 minutes we had everything. About 20 minutes after our food arrived a cashier came and bussed our tables. I had to finish eating so she could take my plate.
At this time my friend went to the register to order to go food for her husband. I put my son in his car seat and started getting coats on the older kids. While we were waiting for it to arrive a large party came in and sat down spread out at the smaller tables waiting for the large tables to clear. They sounded happy and chatty.
Just as our to go order came, the manager walked up to us and said «Ladies I need to ask you to leave.» Like we had done something wrong. There was no introductions, no hints or niceties just point blank please leave. The only thing I can think we did is not spend as much money as the other two tables. Clearly the table with the older kids spent the most. But the table with twins was only feeding 2 people so who knows what we did wrong. The other possibility is my 3 year old played on the piano. Maybe she wasn’t supposed to? It used to be a toy corner and she has been playing over there since she started walking. I asked the women if she was the new owner, she said she was not, only that she was the manager. I told her that our to go order had only just arrived. She looked surprised but just walked away.
Everyone inside heard her and the other two large parties left with us.
I am an advocate for small businesses, especially those that seem like underdogs. This coffee shop has never really been able to get its act together. I’ve always been able to forgive them for their follys (mostly slow or forgotten food) as the weekday staff is so nice. With the new owners some of those nice faces have left and it appears that they should also write a new about page on their website as «Hi Point is (no longer) all about community.»
I do plan on calling the owner and will update this review if the conversation warrants it.
UPDATE: I called Monday morning. Owner sounded exasperated and apologetic. Took my name and number and said she would call back when she new what happened. It’s Thursday. Still no return call.

LOVE the coffee! The coffee actually tastes like coffee, not sweet milk. And there is no drama or mean baristas, like the Purple Bean! GREAT service and lovely people, I ADORE Jae! She is the best! Can’t wait to try their food too! FIVE STARS!

I’d been following their social media for a while looking at their weekly brunch menu with intrigue. It seemed to me that whomever was behind the menu was obviously passionate and enjoyed being in the kitchen. The main thing that kept us away from visiting earlier is the location. It’s not an area of town we frequent much, but really we’ve driven to other places that are probably equally distant. So no more excuses and not feeling in the mood for our usual breakfast/​brunch place, we finally decided to make the drive.
The location is in a bland stripmall, tucked away in the back corner. Inside is cozy and comfortably eclectic with mismatched tables/​chairs, a couple big armchairs in the corner, a basket of coloring books and small toys for kids, an old upright piano, and a take one/​leave one type bookshelf. They have a sort of openish kitchen/​coffee bar set up and a big chalkboard wall with menu specials and community news/​flyers. It really feels like it should be downtown or midtown or somewhere more bustling than this quiet corner of northwest Reno.
The coffee and tea drinks are imaginative and delicious. They are served in house in various homey mugs. There is something that makes a person feel good getting a drink in a bug ceramic mug that says «I love you», heh. They make a very good violet white mocha. Theirs is creamy and sweet and smooth and mellow. This is my signature drink and although I would not say theirs is the best in town, theirs is quite good. The food is homey and delicious, maybe a little high on the price point, but quality ingredients and preparation. My kids like their quiche plate with mixed fruit or their oatmeal. My toddler especially enjoys the presentation of the oatmeal served with little ramekins of nuts, dried fruit, brown sugar, and the tiny carafe of cream. I enjoy that he will actually eat something at a restaurant. For as much as we go out for breakfast, I’m not really a breakfast person so I enjoy that their sandwich menu is available during brunch. My husband lives for breakfast. He’s the type that will order two entrees if he can’t decide, so we’ve sampled a pretty broad array of their offerings and there’s been a few misses but mostly hits. I wish there was something like this closer to where we live, but in the mean time we will come back for the occasional treat here.

Visiting Reno, friend recommend this place. My first impression was «so cute». Ordered the Quiche Breakfast and their November drink «The Cherry Cobbler (cold)». The drink was so delicious both hot and cold version! The quiche was amazing! Very Friendly staff! Recommend this place highly!

I’m definitely going to be doing an updated review since all I got to try was some of their house brew. Hi Point is a pleasant surprise in what looked like a nearly deserted parking lot. My friends and I had planned to meet there to study.
Inside, it’s nice and cozy. I became comfortable right away to start studying. The staff was also really nice. I’m hoping I can try their multi-​course brunch soon to get a bigger picture!

I am a local, and when I think about my coffee choices. Hi Point is the closest.
I like the vibe, the community bulliten board, and the eclectic selection.
However, today, I went for just two coffee to go, and there was NO Coffee. at 7 – 30 am
The young lady was helpful. but to me, no coffee at a café, in the early morning, well
to be fair, she was very nice, but –I like the Hi Point at the VA way better. At least they serve coffee.

We had a late lunch here on a recent family trip to Reno. The reviews were fairly good, and there was a Groupon deal available, so we figured this would be a nice place to get some food.
I’ll start by saying that Hi Point Coffee & Café has a stylish atmosphere, with the interior being full of artsy decorations. One of the coolest features of this place is the «community bookshelf» where readers could take and contribute books. There is also a piano that people could play while waiting for their orders.
While my parents and I only ordered two sandwich plates due to it being well past our normal lunch time, both of them were fresh and delicious. The best part is that the plates cost no more than $ 10 each, and that’s not factoring in the Groupon discount. It’s hard to find prices like these nowadays thanks to inflation.
Hi Point Coffee & Café is great for early birds as it opens at 6:00 a.m. every day. However, the eatery doesn’t serve dinner and closes 4:00 p.m. except during certain promotional periods. This isn’t a huge deal, although people who want a quick bite after a busy day at work will have to look elsewhere.
Overall, the three of us had a really positive experience at this café. The lunch was certainly one of the things that made our vacation so enjoyable.

We came in because of a Groupon, the place is cute and clean, staff was very friendly, and the food was excellent. My wife had the Awful Waffle, she loved it, and it was huge! I had the Loraine scramble with a mini blue berry scone. It was very flavorful, the scone was a bit crumbly, but good taste. We shared the French press coffee. We will definitely return. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is service out of the kitchen was slow. Not the place to go if you need to get in and out quickly.

Probably my favorite place to go and study. I haven’t had a quiche there I haven’t loved, same goes for the soups. The seasonal drinks are always fantastic! And my husband and I went there for their Valentine’s special 4 course (or 5, I forget) dinner: the food was amazing, the service was even better. You can really tell that the staff/​management put their heart and soul into their restaurant.

Love this community-​based coffee shop. I am so impressed that they buy EVERYTHING local (learned this from their incredibly sweet owner Suzanne). From their furniture to their produce, everything is bought within miles. Overall the vibe of the coffee shop is very «shabby chic». They have a cute little community bookshelf and beautiful paper lamps. This place is an awesome place if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy great coffee, homemade food, and a great conversation.
Pro tip: Their homemade scones are a must try item.

I wish businesses would stop opening in unlit corners of quiet shopping centers without telling everyone they’re there. I’ve seen a lot of love for Hi Point on Unilocal and other social media outlets, and had not gone to check it out for one simple reason, geography. Our community is a little too mentally geographically divided and we should all do a little to fix that. Think outside the neighborhood.
I think we use the geography of Reno as an excuse for not exploring the city a little too much. According to Google Maps, it’s a 21 mile 22 minute drive from The Summit Mall to Cabela’s. Just about everything in Reno-​Sparks is 20ish minutes from wherever you are at any given moment, a luxuriously short drive in most other markets around the US, that we totally take for granted.
I take my job of connecting people to great local businesses very seriously, and I love when my meetings take me out of my typical route, and force me to find a new spot. So when a friend asked to meet in the NW, Hi Point was at the top of my list. My friend had never been here or even heard of it, and she lives only a few blocks away, so I was very happy to share it with her.
One look at the menu here, and you’ll know this isn’t your average coffee shop. The signs tell you all their pastries are made in house, including bagels, and their menu is constantly changing. The chalkboards are full of seasonal additions, both in the form of coffee creations and food, as well as daily specials, like their quiches, which are a house specialty.
I originally said the atmosphere is an area where this spot loses a little favor in my book, but it was brought to my attention that this place suffered from some flooding recently that destroyed their beautiful floors and I’m sure a whole lot more. Right now it’s homey and comfortable, with bookcases, couches, and small café tables around, and it seems a little unfinished, but when the new floors go in, I’m sure it will bring it all together. The chairs I sat in on the other hand, were not very comfortable.
In my opinion, the service, staff and menu stand leaps and bounds above the general vibe here, and I wish they’d match up.
That said, I’m really excited to try their special Sunday brunch menu soon. The photos and descriptions of the food sound so delicious. It’s great that the NW has another great coffee shop option and I’m excited to see this one really start booming.

Hi Point was on the list for my wife and I to try. My wife was friends with someone who works up there and that was reason enough to at least try them out even though they are on the complete other side of town from our home. Also they serve coffee in mugs instead of just in paper cups. So we decided to head up there on our «date day» and have a little conversation and heated drinks containing milk, tea, coffee and various sugars.
First off this is probably a great place to chill while your dog gets, clipped, poked, prodded and taken care of. It seems this particular mall has become a magnet for pet related businesses. However I am not sure they would allow your furry friend inside the café, even so, there is some outdoor seating that probably would suit the animal lovers just fine. The mall itself is a bit older and has a dated feel to it. On the other hand it seems well patronized by the look of the parking lot the last few times I have been there.
So from the outset it doesn’t seem like that «swank» of a lunch spot. However when you walk in, the feel moves from aging strip mall to quaint and funky breakfast and lunch spot. They have a friendly and warm decorating scheme. Local artists on the walls accompany different coffee related adornments.
The coffee was delicious, and just a heads up. The 16 oz hot beverages come in a pint beer glass with a paper insulator. Next time I will probably go for the 12 oz just to get the mug. I’m getting particular in my old age and want the handled mug. My chai was also very good too. They let me adjust the number of pumps to reduce the sweet factor.
On a previous occasion we went for a fund raiser here as well. Although the food that night is not on the regular menu, it does show the abilities and offerings that are available through their catering service. I had quite possibly the best dish of my life that night. It was an amazing Lamb Ragout w/​Sweet Potato Gnocchi. My wife had the Ratatouille and they also offered a fish dish.
The service both times we have been in has been great, friendly and warm.
I wont hesitate to go back and try them for some normal menu food stuffs. Or even have a small intimate event here. Either way, I am looking forward to trying them again in the future.
