Redondo Union High School

It feels a little weird to rate a school, but here goes. The campus is beautiful with revamped sports facilities (football, swimming, soccer, etc.) ! It was recently renovated and now looks more like a college campus than a high school campus. A+ for aesthetics. Interestingly enough, there is ample parking, although it doesn’t look like the parking lot if large enough. Obviously, it gets busy when school is starting and ending, but that is to be expected. Redondo offers a ton of clubs (Robotics, X-​Box, ACE (engineering), even Frisbee, and much more) for the students, so there is literally something for everyone. Since this is the only HS in Redondo; the admissions process could use some work, especially from kids that are coming from different districts. In my opinion, they were a bit understaffed which required students to start school late. This is tough for you child, especially if they are an incoming freshman from a different district. The other big complaint is the ChromeBook (school issued laptops). When school started, we had trouble logging in (where we are suppose to get the class work), and they said they couldn’t fix it right away since they were so back logged. The problem is, the student couldn’t get the school work. This needs to be address immediately. You can’t just tell a student they can’t get the school work because Redondo is back logged. It’s not fair to the student. That would be my biggest complaint. I think they are working of streamlining it though. =)
All and all though, Redondo has been so far so good. Most of the issues were in the beginning when school started, but all has been good since then.

My son is a freshman in the year round off season volleyball training led by Duncan Avery. We feel sooo blessed to be a part of Duncan’s program & to be attending the finest school in the South Bay!

This a great high school and it’s academics. It’s campus is nice and very big. Their new swimming pool is beautiful and I go swimming there quite often!!! It’s in a great location and their teachers are good!

Seems kinda funny reviewing a school, especially when it’s pretty much the only public school option for this grade range. We have been to this campus many times for a variety of events. I previously chaired an elementary variety show here for several years – the auditorium is fantastic. They have a ton of new upgrades recently done, making this school a greater place. My daughter is considering going here for her next semester (currently doing online homeschooling).

Not a review for the hs itself, but for the entire district. Teacher morale is low and they say it’s because the administration is over domineering and has unfairly treated the staff over the last several years.

Best school in the south bay. I recommend that if you have a choice you should attend this school.

Beautiful campus with new buildings, new swimming pool and all the more to come. Yay, something to look forward to when my kids are in high school.
But for the life of me, I can’t figure out why they just spent over a month churning up that good patch of baseball field so they can look the same afterwards or even worse.
With all that fanfare and dusts, I thought we’re going to get some state of the art new design and better looking turfs. No, I was wrong, we are looking at exactly the same pattern but crappier looking grass covered baseball field! Now they water that grass day and night so it could grow like it was before. So what was the purpose of all that?
Each quarter we put in our share of financial support to the RBUSD on top of our tax money, bc they constantly sending us emails, flyers, and phone calls. We’re happy to support if it is used on where is needed. This year a second language class almost got cancelled in the middle school due to the budget cut. And some of the elective classes are not offered this year, so I don’t see how they can justify revamping the already good-​looking baseball field when there is such a shortage of teachers! Ok, maybe there is a separate fund just for upgrading the sports facilities, I’ll buy that! But let’s get some perspectives here, what do we expect the future pillars of our country to be?

This place is so beautiful. They did a real nice job with the track and the field event areas. I truly enjoyed the shot put area and the staff at the track meet where super friendly. Tons of parking on the street right in front of the staduim. Very safe and friendly community.

This is an extremely great school. The school is very diverse. The also offer AP (advanced placement) classes, they offer honor classes, they offer AVID programs. This school is good as far as sports, they are very competitive, and successful.

RUHS has a beautiful campus where students have to walk between their classes in the light of the sun. While some may find it challenging to have to walk a few yards and climb some stairs, I prefer to think of it as disguised physical activity for today’s teenage population.
Not sure what the earlier reviewer meant by the angry white citizens. Most of those don’t have kids or don’t send them to public schools. RUHS has a wonderfully mixed and diverse student population which brings a lot of interest and different viewpoints to the school experience. This is one of the things that sets Redondo apart from the other beach cities (except Torrance) which tend to be the white BMW crowd, more than surfer dudes these days.
The academics at the school are very good, whether compared to public or private school. They offer a lot of AP courses for college bound students and lots of college and career counseling for everyone. They used to have more «tech» students with kids whose parents worked in the aerospace industry but the companies are changing and theres a greater mix of people in the city now.
It is very true that they have a stealing problem in PE. We’ve lost hundreds of dollars in iPods and cell phones, not to mention an entire backpack with textbooks, from a locked locker. The PE teachers are useless and unhelpful, although it is happening under their noses. Next thing that gets stolen is going to be reported to the police.

Eh.
They talk about having a wonderful school, yadda yadda, but this place is average. The minority population has increased, but the Angry Rich White Citizens of 90 277 are not happy about that.
There’s a big stealing problem during PE. For the past few years, kids have been breaking into gym lockers and stealing iPods, cell phones, wallets, etc. And, of course, since a lot of kids here have iPhones and what not, who can blame them?
The iPod policy here is «Don’t ask, don’t tell». Kids can listen during passing period, snack, or lunch. but not during class. Although every family had to sign an agreement saying iPod use is prohibited, no one cares, not even the faculty.
Cell phones can be used during passing period, snack, or lunch. Many kids secretly text during class, but you have that at every school.
The layout for RUHS is horrible. There are so many hills and stairs to climb, you’re out of breath in ten seconds. And, to top it off, you’re carrying a million heavy books.
Absences must be cleared. If they haven’t been cleared by a parent in 5 days, it’s a truant. Tardies used to be overlooked, but a new «no-​tolerance» policy is rubbing kids the wrong way. The only excuse you have to being tardy is a doctor’s appointment of something of the sort.
The drama department is very competitive, but very professional. Most teachers sort of care for the kids. No gang activity, really, and lots and lots of clubs. Salsa club, Improv club, Writing club, etc. etc. along with any thing else you can think of. Any student can start their own club with a relativel painless process.
So, overall, this is a good school. It has the same problems as any other school, especially stealing and drugs.
Let’s get a little bit rowdy!
