I, like others, am guilty of only writing reviews after having a negative experience with a business, but my experience with Sutherland Plumbing was so exceptionally great that it warranted my first positive review.
My girlfriend and I just bought our first house, and along with it came all of the joy and surprises that typically accompany such an endeavor. On the first day we moved in we were greeted with a tankless water heater that was not functioning. We called out a technician who was covered under our home warranty, and he was able to diagnose the problem, but told us that the part we needed was not available anywhere near us and would have to be ordered. It was looking like it would be about a week before the part would come in and could be installed by the technician, due to the holidays.
I ordered the part online myself, and paid $ 50 to have it delivered in one day with the hope that if it came quick we could get the technician back to install it. Wanting a quicker solution, and on a whim, I called the first plumbing company I found online just to see if there was the possibility that someone had the part we needed on hand would be willing to sell it to me directly so we could try to get the part installed and have hot water before Christmas. I struck gold with the first company I contacted, which was Sutherland plumbing.
I half expected the person answering the phone to just tell me «no, not possible» when I indicated that I was just looking to buy a part, and was not in need of a technician or any other services. Instead, she was extremely helpful and took down all of my information as well as the part number, and told me that she would contact their tankless specialist who would get back to me. She made no promises, but was willing to help me try and took the time to pass on my information. Enter Bob, the owner of Sutherland plumbing.
Bob called me back in a timely matter, and with exceptional customer service and a great attitude told me that he not only had the part, but that he would meet me back at his shop to sell it to me when he was finished for the day. I went to pick up the part, and was so impressed with the patience demonstrated and the time Bob took to not only wait for me to get there (mind you this was the end of the day when anyone would be wanting to just get off work and go home) but to also show me exactly how I could easily make the repair myself. He walked me back into the shop, and with great detail explained exactly what to do, and took the time to search for a unit that was exactly like mine to give a demonstration.
In the end, he sold me the part for what seemed like less than cost (certainly less than I could find it available for online). I went home, and with his instructions the water heater was back up and running in less than 10 minutes. I have never had such exceptional service from anybody, let alone anyone who was not making a dime for their services or expert advice.
I feel indebted to Bob for all of his help, patience, and his «no big deal» attitude. He turned what could have been a long week without hot water and showers into a Christmas break where we could truly enjoy our first few days in our new house, while saving me a nice chunk of cash (I was able to cancel my rush order for the part). He clearly went above and beyond, and never once seemed to be inconvenienced or rushed to go home at the end of his work day (as most would!) I feel like I could have called 20 companies and not gotten anywhere, but struck gold on my first call!
Bob and Sutherland plumbing have earned a new customer for life, and I will not hesitate to call them for any of my plumbing needs in the future. I encourage anyone looking for these services to reach out to them.

These people are great! A couple months ago I had a water main in my back yard break. It was a disaster there was a lake in my backyard. This company came right out and got us up and running. Best part about the whole experience is that they came in under budget! I would definitely use this company again.

Both of my Bathroom sinks wouldn’t drain and were filled with backed-​up dirty, smelly brown water. My bathtub also would not drain and was also filled with brown smelly water. I called Sutherland Plumbing first thing on a Friday morning and they said they would have someone out between 3:30 and 4:30. He showed up at 4:30 with one snake. After about 45 minutes, he tells me that his snake came back with «mud» on it, which, he tells me, means that my pipes have flattened out. Then he says that he was not able to clear the clogs because he really needed a bigger snake, but he had only brought the ONE. He then proceeds to tell me that he could POSSIBLY come back on Monday to jet the lines with water. (If he couldn’t clear the line with the snake, how is he going to clear it with water? AND. How can you tell the difference between «mud» and «sludge»??) I ask how much this is going to cost and he says, «with ALL the work I did today and then having to come back and jet the lines, you are looking at $ 450.00 at least.» ARE YOU KIDDING ME? First of all, «all the work he did» STILL DID NOT CLEAR MY LINES! AND HE WANTS TO CHARGE ME FOR THAT? Anyways, cut to TUESDAY-​4days LATER and I havent heard a word from them! This company couldnt care less! They knew my situation and just left me with my Backed up sinks and backed up tub with gross smelly brown water for FOUR ENTIRE DAYS-​going on 5 now– with not so much as a word or return any of my calls! Needless to say, I am FURIOUS! So save yourself and LEARN from MY MISERY and USE SOMEONE ELSE because this company isn’t for ANYONE!

I don’t always write reviews, but two things made me want to. First, when I reviewed this company, I saw Jenn’s review and was hesitant to contact Sutherland at all. Second, is the wonderful work they did for us once I spoke with them and had them come out. I’m not saying Jenn is wrong since that’s her experience. For me, we had nothing but a great experience.
We had a very old tankless water heater that had all but expired. After doing a lot of research talking to a couple of other companies, I contacted Sutherland and spoke with a couple of the employees. I was pleased to find that they were quick to provide solid information about the manufacturers I was looking at and were clearly knowledgeable. There was no bait and switch, instead Ryan provided great information about which unit made sense for our home. I suppose it is ego here because they recommended what I thought was the right unit (so I felt good… yippee). We agreed on a Noritz Tankless unit (
). They are a designated installer for Noritz. Note: these days there are several very good companies.
Because we were not an emergency, we waited about 5 days to have the installation done. The install was done by Ellis and Bob. They were on time and fully prepared for the demo and installation. It took one day for everything to be completed. When they were finished, there was no mess for us to take care of.
A couple of days after the installation was done I had a question. I suppose it could have been handled on the phone, but Bob and Ellis stopped by our home and took care of the question in person. It turned out that there was no problem, but that I simply wasn’t use to having uninterrupted hot water…:)
I highly recommend Sutherland for your needs. I found them to be honest, informative, precise in their work, neat, and got the job done in a timely fashion. I don’t think this is a do it yourself project. These units are very technical and it seems easy to mess things up. I would rather pay up front than pay for repairs.

I’ve been using these guys for 2 years, since buying some investment properties in Carmichael. And I’ll never use another company. They do great work. Very consistent. And have been available when I need them. I love calling and being able to talk directly with the owner, and get honest and quick responses. Would highly recommend Sutherland Plumbing to anyone.

This company was called out becuase the tech claims he is the best in Sac. He does get one star for showing up, but the technician actually made our hot water heater worse by adjusting something that did not even need adjusting, and we had to call someone else to fix his mistake, and the original hot water heater was never resolved. The technician agreed to refund our money as nothing was ever fixed and then renegged. This company operates with bait and switch tactics. Do yourself a favor and call someone else.
