I went yesterday for a permanent eyeliner application purchased through Groupon. I was nervous, but Stephanie was kind and professional and put me at ease by patiently answering my questions and offering her professional opinion on the best customized procedure for me. I knew I wanted pigment in my lash line itself rather than eyeliner, something very subtle, and ultimately decided with her help to do a black in my lash line. Don’t think otherwise – this is an actual tattoo. I think they purposefully avoid that specific word as to not deter people who may flinch at the idea of an eye tattoo, but that’s what it is, just with a hand operated needle because a normal tattooing needle packs too much power for such a delicate area. I talked myself up for having tattoos already, having had 3.5 hours of tattooing on my ribcage, high pain threshold, I’d be fine, etc. This procedure was very painful, in a different way from my other 3 tattoos. Perhaps it’s how awkward it is and scary to have a needle so close to my eye, and how tender your eyelid obviously is. First, Stephanie asked what I was looking to do, we decided on the specifics, and I signed release papers. I got in the chair and she told me she would be numbing the area with a cream, but had to prepare the area first with a «dry needle.» She told me it would be intense… it was literally as if my lash line were being scraped away with a needle. Unbelievable pain, but I accepted it as necessary and tried to just take it like a champ. The numbing cream sat for about 10 minutes before the tattooing itself began. She went over the area a few times, back and forth. At first, it was fine with the numbing. But, like any other tattoo, the more you go over the same area, the worse it is each time. I asked for more numbing on the second eye, maybe to prevent it from happening that way again, and she said it wouldn’t help, but then she did end up putting more and it did help. Moving past the gruesome details, the end result is fantastic. It’s just what I wanted. I was scared I’d look odd without makeup with a thick black line on top of my eye, but it’s not that way at all, it looks lovely. I just wanted something to amplify the effects of mascara and create an illusion of thicker, fuller lashes and that is what I got. It’s subtle enough that my boyfriend didn’t notice(which is what I wanted!) but that I notice when I wake up in the morning. I got it done yesterday afternoon and woke up today with swollen eyelids, but it was worth it in the end. I never thought I’d be one to get permanent makeup, but I’m glad I did. I loved how I looked before, now I just love it a little more!
