Voz Worker Education Project

I arrived in PDX yesterday with a bed to lug upstairs and a small SUV loaded to the gills. Drove over to the center and hired one young man for this job. Was greeted by a bilingual interpreter who took my info and got us all set up.
Luis was great! He didn’t speak much English and my Spanish is pretty non-​existent, but he had a translation app for his phone… We got along just great!
I urge everyone to support this program and hire your next worker from this organization. They don’t take a commission so your worker retains the full amount, and they have other services for the workers. I can’t wait to use them again. Great community resource!

These folks did a GREAT job helping me move and pack and set up my new home. I will absolutely recommend them to other people. I was nervous about going to hire and pick up some folks I didn’t know, but it was SO EASY and worked out really well.
They were fast, worked hard, cost less than a moving company, polite, and more than capable of helping with hanging art and securing bookshelves.
And, to agree with others, you get the added benefit of making sure the money you spend goes to someone who worked hard to earn it, rather than somewhere else.
Was a GREAT experience, can’t recommend this enough!
To the reviewer D.S.: (the person who left the one star review): your review makes you sound like a racist, and I do not believe you hired these folks. I’d ask Unilocal to remove your post, unless you actually hired these folks and have a real complaint about the service you received.

We had a very positive experience hiring two day laborers to help with moving into our new rental home and also painting a couple of rooms.
We arrived at the MLK location and they quickly set us up with two workers. We drove them to our home. They were eager, pleasant and fast working. One spoke English and translated for the other laborer. The work we had done was pretty basic, but we were glad to have the help. We made sure to provide lunch and drinks. At the end of the work day, we dropped them off back off.
I would highly recommend hiring help through VOZ. This organization along with other laborer organizations exist «to develop leadership, mobilize, and organize day laborers in order to protect and expand their civil, labor and human rights.» (taken from their website). Win-​win for everyone!

Passed by the MLK location (249 NE Martin Luther King Blvd– 503−234−2043) and hired someone to do the locks for babyproofing my house.
Guy comes by as requested. He is a basic laborer (don’t assume hispanic, because my guy was caucasian), and did the work. He’s not a professional, but someone who could do the basics. It took longer than I thought, (pay per hour), but there is a $ 10/​4h min (can and should pay more dep on ability).
I felt good for giving someone a job I couldn’t handle (but most handy person can). I gave him a tip because I know he needs the money and it felt better to give money to someone who is trying to work then a panhandler on the street. This service is not just for home remodels.
Will use them for when I move, should i need help with boxes. They also do landscaping, concrete, moving, painting, carpentry, roofing, demolition, plumbing, drywall, textue, digging, window/​gutter cleaning and more. Great website
