The Modern Man

At one time this place was great, but I can’t say enough bad things about it now.
I don’t know all the details of the drama that has been unfolding for months. But it definitely has impacted the business and I’ve been witnessing the long decline appointment by appointment over recent months. I went in the other day and discovered the name has now been changed to «Dapper Barber.» I suppose that this «Modern Man» page should be shut down, since officially that business no longer exists.
However, the minute they put up the «Dapper Barber» page here on Unilocal,I’ll be there to lend my scathing tongue to its hopeful demise. Whoever has taken over this business in the middle of this soap opera is doing a total shyte job. I could craft a very long list of details that includes their ridiculous scheduling system, no one answering the phone to take appointments or cancel them, ghetto-​ass barbers behaving unprofessionally during appointments, and much, much more. But let me sum it up with my last visit, the thing that really provoked me to write this review:
I went in for a beard trim last week. I got there and the barber I had booked wasn’t even working that day — yet another problem with their half-​assed scheduling system that booked me in the wrong week. So I took a chance on another barber. He trimmed my beard and then asked me if I wanted the additional service to line it up. I was a bit surprised, since a beard trim is an all-​inclusive service. But I said yes, without asking the price, and not surprisingly got bent over and robbed. Beard trim $ 10 + beard line up $ 15 (WTF?!) + $ 5 tip that I should never have given = $ 30. Are you f@%$ing kidding me?! I could get a designer haircut for less. Even worse, my beard looked like I had done it myself with the Norelco beard trimmer, so I went off for a weekend of events looking like a schmuck.
Jacking up prices while your services are in decline is a wonderful strategy. Let the market teach you the wisdom of your ways. I predict this place won’t survive.
I hope to make contact with my regular guy so he can call me if/​when he leaves this place. I will never be back otherwise.
SCAM BUSINESS!

Wow. Really bummed to read the story in the Oregonian about the scumbag owners of this local chain. Apparently they skipped town in May with a bunch of unpaid bills. Bounced or missed paychecks, owe their talented barbers thousands of dollars and aren’t returning calls. Some new investors taking over but they sound shady too.
I’ve been getting good haircuts here for years, but done now. Sad to see it go, hope the displaced barbers land on their feet.

Took lil brother to get his haircut and the place automatically have a friendly vibe. We first got there without an appointment so the nice lady schedule us an hour later. I would recommend to call ahead and ask when it is the right time to come. The haircut is exactly what he wanted and it looks very good on him at a reasonable price.

The place does not have the polish and appeal it once did. But there is still some great barbers here. The first few times I went here I was impressed. The guy at the front desk was a gentleman’s gentleman. Great service and made you feel like you were somebody special. Warm greeting, thank you for coming in, can I offer you a drink? This time I was handed a ticket and asked to go up stairs. The place is in need of a fresh coat of paint and a little re-​decorating. There are holes in the wall and outlines of where things used to be. Empty chairs where employees used to work. It’s a little depressing. All that being said Jovian has some skill and can execute a killer cut. And at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about for me. What drew me in originally was the atmosphere. What will keep me coming back is Jovian. Dude kills it!

I walked in the door at 7:15 (they close at 8). One guy getting his haircut and two barbers. I say «hey I’m here for a haircut» and the guy looks at the clock annoyed and says «I think I can fit you in.» OK, I’d hope so, you’re still open for 45 mins. He cut my hair in 10 mins and had me facing the door so I couldn’t see anything. I tried striking up a conversation a couple times, he had nothing to say. I thought $ 28 for a mediocre cut was too much. They never offered me a whiskey or beer like I heard they did. I won’t be back.

Use to love this place. My go to barber shop was on Mississippi. I had been trying to make an appointment for a week, online and by phone. The online reservations are down and no voicemail service or automated message saying they are closed. I called another location on my way home and they informed me Mississippi was temporarily closed. I asked if they had time today and they slotted me in for an appointment that I informed them I would not be able to hit timing exactly. They tell me no worries if I show up the most I’ll wait is 20 min. I drive out of my way, get there 7 min after the appointment time. No one is up front, as someone appears few minutes later on the phone. I tell them my name and the situation. They tell me they can’t serve me for another 1.5 hrs. I am going to be finding a new barber.

This place used to be great. I went to the same person there several times. He did a fantastic job. On the second to last time I was there, one of the other barbers was carrying on about how it’s necessary to «beat your girlfriend to keep her in line.» Whaaat?
The next time I went there, my favorite guy had left, and I got this guy who was giving a female employee a hard time about some injury she sustained, which was taking time to heal, he said, because «girls are weak.» Whaaat?
What’s more, he gave me a haircut in about 5 minutes, without letting me see it up close, and when I got home it looked like a 10 year old had done it. I told friends I cut it myself and they’d say «oh yeah, I see where you messed it up.»
So if you’re into misogyny and inconsistent cuts, go here.

Javier is THE MAN!!! Best cut ever! He takes the time to make you look amazing. I’ve been to a lot of different shops around town, but my search stopped when I found Javier at The Modern Man. He’s legit. Sick fades! Thanks again!

Needed a quick head shave. It looks like they tore a page out of maxim magazine and just copied the look.
The staff were a little on the «we are waaay to cool for school» douchey side. Their jokes were predictable and conversation was barely interesting.
This place will dry up and blow away in the near future

Hey Modern Man! Thanks for closing up shop in Montavilla and not bothering to call to let me know my appointment was cancelled! Or that this location went out of business. I called the Hawthorn street location to see if my barber relocated to another Modern Man location and was told they couldn’t help me. Really?
Good luck with your crappy business model Modern Man. If you burn clients like me who get a cut by the same barber every 3 weeks for a year, your gonna need it!

Months ago this would have been 5 stars. Then they stopped paying the barbers. My barber was forced to find a new location because she needed paid. As a client it was frustrating to know I paid for the service and my barber didn’t get paid for the work.

Great haircut, and they did it SUPER fast, like 15 minutes. Very clean cut and very precise, and he shaved the back of my neck at the end. Not crowded on a Tuesday at 1230, so they took me as a walk in. The guy cutting my hair said it was mostly tourists in there, people who wanna try someplace new they’ve never been before. They had a few bottles of whiskey and I guess they give you a shot complementary, but I didn’t have any. It was very Portland – old timey kinda saloon décor, a fake buffalo head on the wall.
The only weird thing was that the reception guy and my barber spent the entire time complaining about bad customers they’d had. I understand that work is work and shitty customers are annoying and you gotta blow off steam sometimes – but really? The whole time? It was a tad uncomfortable. The guy behind the desk even joked about it once, how it was probably inappropriate for them to have that conversation. But then they kept going.

I really had a great experience here! I got a straight razor head shave and beard trim from Olivia and she was fantastic! She took her time and made sure to ask what I wanted and just really did a wonderful job. She was also nice to talk to and seems like a great person, I would highly recommend this place and would definitely recommend Olivia!

Best haircut I’ve ever had. No even joking. The atmosphere here is great. None of that pompous haircut vibes like an establish that starts with an R. As soon as you arrive you are greeted with the up most respect and served with your drink of choice. Now this isn’t your regular variety of beverages. The drinks are question are whiskey, bourbon, and other liquids found at your favorite watering hole. Soon after a few sips of my drink, Emily Hicks killed it on my hair with the upmost detail. I would recommend asking for her. Also note that prices here are phenomenal. Consider this, shot of whiskey, a cigar and great haircut for $ 27. unbelievable! Stop your search on Unilocal and book a time already!

I looked at the pics on Instagram (@themodernmanpdx) and decided to give it a shot. I wanted to try the faded style for the first time and get the top a little shorter.
I set up an appointment the day before and received exactly what I wanted. My barber’s name was Hayden (not sure if I spelled that right) and he was very relaxed and allowed me to give him feedback. I asked to shorten the top one more time for an extra half inch and he was happy to do so.
I asked for a fade that wasn’t to extreme and it turned out to be perfect. The side part was done with a trimmer first then a straight razor. The part also curved a little bit to fit the contours of my head; I hope he did that on purpose.
The only thing I had to do on my own was fade the beard a little bit but I’ll just ask next time — I realized afterwards when looking at the faded style that it makes sense to fade the beard too. Many people don’t do it but it meshes nicely with the faded sides.
These people are very skilled and really know what they’re doing so I highly recommend you check them out.

Best Barber shop in Oregon. My husband and 3 boys are regulars. They always look great after a hair cut there. Jesus is the man… but all the stylists there are top notch. Class class class is what you get when you go there.

So, I’m that guy. The one that likes to give precious little information to my barber in the hopes that he’ll supply me with the perfect cutting-​edge cut that I can still wear into meetings. The one that then gets upset because my hair is either too boring or too out there. And even after a few haircuts and professing my undying love, I end up bolting. I am basically emotionally abusive to my barbers. Adam, let’s not let that happen to us. You gave me such a great haircut and were interesting to chat with.
The whole place is of course obligatorily hip, and they serve up booze while you’re getting your cut, which is always welcome. They take appointments (and have an easy online system for booking), but I am willing to bet that walk-​ins are regularly accommodated. There are a lot of chairs at this location, and there was a lot of folks just hanging out the entire time I was there.
Any place that makes me more handsome is pretty much my favorite place in the world, so you all can expect to hear me sing The Modern Man’s praises for quite a while.

2 years ago the alcoholic in me was easily seduced by the idea of a haircut with a beer or whiskey on the side. Plus I like to live on the edge, why not get a little tipsy with sharp razors near my head? Now, in the midst of the plethora of barbershops/​salons that offer their own version of a cut and booze I realize what I really want is a quality haircut without the frills.
After much searching at other shops I finally discovered Sang at the Alberta location. Walking in I declined the many tempting Widmer brews (that’s how you know I mean business) and sat in the barber chair with bated breath. It’s always a bit of a gamble when you visit a new barber and unfortunately time is the only solution to a terrible cut.
It was immediately clear that Sang was a veteran in his art and he showcased his skills by giving me a crisp fade and the best haircut I’ve had in months. It’s not easy pulling off a high and tight cut but he did it perfectly. I will sing the song of Sang all day long! If you like looking really ridiculously good, go see this guy.

Thank you for making me look so presentable to humanity. I curiously walked in as I did not make an appointment, they accommodated my untamed locks within 30 minutes.
A little song or three later, I got my crown chopped and I look decent and pleasant once again. I look sharper than my previous cut. Jesus was helpful and amazing.

My boyfriend was very hesitant about going here because there seem to be some bad reviews. However I made him take a chance and he looks very handsome. Not that he wasn’t before. Just better now with a clean and AMAZING hair cut.
We came in and he was offered and beer. Which is a plus to him. We went upstairs and Favian cut his hair. He took his time and was very skilled at what he does.
Although his technique is different that’s what my boyfriend expected, the end results were absolutely amazing. He styled and cleaned up the back of my boyfriends neck, leaving him looking clean and handsome.
I would recommend this place to anyone who needs hair cut or a shave, and a beer.
