The Good Mod

A quick word of praise for the guys and gals at The Good Mod. About a year ago, I purchased a restored Plycraft lounger (their version of the Eames lounger, which some like better than the original) for a fraction of what the non-​reclining Eames lounger would cost. In the course of a year, something down under popped loose. I called TGM and explained, and they sent someone to pick it up. I met with the restorer, who explained what had happened and how they would fix it, and also the upholster, who explained what she could do to provide more cushioning. Both were highly expert and eager to help. I paid a modest amount for the upholstery and was charged nothing for either the chair repair or the pickup and delivery. They stand by their work.
I’ve been in their expansive 4^th floor space five or six times to look at furniture and art, and I’ve never had any but the most cordial reception. Yes, TGM is NOT a cheap second-​hand store with little or no expertise in restoration or upholstery. That’s why I’ll continue to shop there.

They really are «the best» in concrete. I have (had) an unusually narrow driveway and needed somebody to widen it for me. I did a fair amount of research and decided to give Bill and Sue a call. All I have to say is that you should ignore the one bad review on here. That person is complaining just to complain. A family emergency is no reason to leave a poor review.
That said, Best in Concrete typically does larger jobs. Mine was very small and they could have easily blown me off for something that pays more, but they didn’t. I called and they both came out to my house the next day to give a free quote and they were ready to do the job the next day. Unfortunately for them, they experienced a death in the family and needed to postpone a couple of days to be with family. A phone call would have been sufficient, but they actually came out to my house to tell me in person. This is how they conduct business. They are very personable and treat their customers the way they would want to be treated themselves. They’re family people and treated my wife and I like their own family.
I would highly recommend contacting Bill and Sue regardless of whether your job is large or small. You will not be disappointed. The quality of their work is as good as it gets.

It’s no secret that the quality of furniture making is in decline. It’s just easier to mold it out of sawdust and glue, or mold it out of plastic. The sad thing is that the molded sawdust is sheathed with veneer, thin sheets of wood peeled from often old growth trees or endangered tropical hardwoods. Often that tree that took a hundred years or more to grow, is being used to make a piece of furniture with a life of 3 – 5 years. Don’t let us get started into veneer poaching
. Or hardwoods fueling war lords.
. That’s just sick.
The Good Mod is going against that grain. Their specialty is mid-​century modern from the Scandinavian invasion. Those Vikings and their furniture!
They refinish or reupholster the pieces as necessary and the price reflects that. If you have ever priced having a piece of furniture shot with a couple coats of lacquer by a professional, who also, by the way, is being paid to properly handle lacquer, which is very toxic, you know. But those prices are comparable to the new price in its time. And you are getting a piece of furniture you can pass down generations. In fact, some of it may become design auction material in the future.
They were good on my visit with cadenzas, occasional chairs, classic Knoll chairs, a few sofas, lighting.
They also gather up some industrial artifacts and repurpose them, if that fits your aesthetics.
One of their newest spec pieces is a walnut ping pong table, which could also be used as a dining table. This item would fit well into the tech startup world. If you are an art director or set decorator they would be a good resource.
The Good Mod has moved around and as of this writing are up a creaky elevator or quite a few stairs on the fourth floor. But that gives them a new big cheap space. And note to new arrivers decorating your Pearl condos — if you can rock this style, you can patronize a great Portland reuse business. You can even fib a little and claim your hip grandparents/​parents/​you bought it new!
The Good Mod cleans up and restores furniture from the mid-​century modernist age. Reduce, reuse, recycle! Be cool, stay cool, keep cool! (Thanks to Mr Oscar Brown Jr)

They are trying.
Pricing is high.
Inventory /​selection is limited.
They have the space. Resources to fill it and to market it? Thinking they need help.
Workmanship on their restored pieces is very good.
I believe if they focused on more restored pieces and with proper marketing they may hit a home run over time.
Can they last… I would like to believe they can.
Overpriced.yes!
I grew up with a house filled with Danish Modern.
And live with it now.
I do purchase for my kids and add to my home often.
I know good value.
Sadly, I find better value/​deals elsewhere.

This is not your modern-​day furniture store. Don’t expect to be strolling into a living version of Dwell Magazine or Design Within Reach. That said, I am a little enamored with this space. It’s this hidden gem in the heart of part of Portland’s busiest (traffic wise, at least) area. An incredible lofty, industrial feeling space… A great place to browse for truly unique furniture and home-​décor items. Seemingly, most of these items have been refurbished from worn down condition.
There’s something magical about wandering the treasures in the Good Mod. When the day comes that I have a true home to furnish (goodbye IKEA), they’ll be on my list for exploring.

The goods offered here do not reflect fair market prices. Furniture here is WAY over-​priced and NOT worth the asking prices on ALL the pieces I looked at over the weekend. Some of the furniture is in horrible condition (one couch I sat on had uneven legs and wobbled when sat on: Forest Wilson Wool Sectional Sofa with Drawer).
There are better, more reasonable vintage furniture shops to choose from in the area…

Yes, Portland has a lot of vintage furniture shops. What sets The Good Mod well apart from these is the fact that they not only get beautiful pieces in, they meticulously restore them to virtually like-​new condition. So, you really feel like you’re buying new and not a piece that was made in 1968. We are in the process of re-​doing a room in our house with a mid-​century modern aesthetic. Over the course of a few visits, we’ve bought a killer credenza, 2 side tables, and 2 coffee tables. All of them in absolutely beautiful shape, thanks to the artisans that work there. You can tell they really care about what they do. The staff is also super-​helpful and are able to give really good design thoughts/​advice if you ask. Their stock is fairly large, but they keep getting new stuff in all the time, so every visit will likely hold a new surprise in store. Having shopped around a bit, it also strikes me that their price points are VERY reasonable for what you are getting. This has become our go-​to place. It’s worth going through that inconspicuous door and down those hallways into the creaky 1930’s era elevator to come out on the 4^th floor and see what awaits!

Simply a fun collection of items. The permutations available make your mind spin with the potential. The staff is very very helpful. I got a piece and needed the perfect chair to go with it. They sold me the chair under their bottom as it was the perfect match! How much more helpful can you get?

I’m glad they finally put the sign outside and inside to guide you to the elevator. It’s a little tricky to find if you don’t know where you are going.
We went to get a mid-​century credenza we saw on craigslist, but we ended up buying two Knoll Tulip Chairs, they need some love (they were painted grey), but the cushions are original and impeccable!

This is not the best choice in Portland for vintage modern! I give these folks credit for trying to offer a hip product in a great space, but the prices are much too high for the quality of the furniture. Truly, these are Soho, top of the line prices, and that’s not what they are selling. There are many other vintage furniture stores in town where you can pay half the price for as good if not better furniture!

my wife and i love danish design furniture from the 50’s to 70’s so you can imagine our delight when we litterally stumbled onto the good mod on burnside in portland.
the staff was knowledge and not pushy, the service from repair and refurbishing, to delivery was flawless and the selection of danish modern home and industrial furniture was absolutely fabulous. and they even have parking on site in the same building so it is convenient to pick up your own purchases if so desired
we have purchased a set of 6 teak dining room chairs and a set of teak bedroom end tables and love what they do for our home
the only problem with the good mod for us is trying to avoid buying too many items!

Very large area with great pieces.

Easily one of the more interesting stores in Portland. A bizarre collection, a menagerie if you will, of industrial and mid-​century modern furniture. It inspires me just to walk in here because I end up with more ideas about how I want to change my house.
Spencer, the owner, knows his stuff and is easily accommodating. Even if you have furniture to sell he’ll drive to pick it up if it’s a good piece. Seems like they always have something new coming in. So… it’s always worth a trip to see what new inspiration awaits. :)

I recently had a Hans Olson mid-​century couch for sale. The Good Mod purchased my couch for resale in their retail location and although I was skeptical of accepting a business check, the funds were indeed deposited into my account. The check didn’t bounce… I’m a fan.

The Good Mod is what it is in large part because of its founder, Spencer. When you step into its warehouse/​show room, you’re met by a carefully curated collection of mid-​century furniture but also some fun «Brazil”-esque oddities (the movie, not the country)… I’ve also found they’re super helpful with taking requests or consulting on some DYI questions. I didn’t find it hard to find but I guess it’s a little bit off the beaten path? But I guess that’s also why I like it.

I kind of don’t want to be the first one to review this because this is such a hidden little gem for mid-​century modern furniture. It’s a totally random location so you feel like its a bit of a treasure hunt. There’s always good finds and the owners are super friendly.
Another note about the location: you will feel like you are not suppose to be there… it’s in a warehouse and a bit hard to find, but just follow the signs.
