Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams

Always good experiences here. The sales staff has always been friendly and helpful, but most importantly, their products are well made (most in the USA!) and will look good for a long time.
Their seating (I have both a sofa and oversized club chair from MG+BW) is some of the best I’ve ever come across: good quality leather and top-​notch construction. Both pieces have aged very well and even after 10 years are still as comfortable as they were when brand new.
I also helped a relative pick out a rug from MG+BW, which is also excellent quality, looks great and has held up well. I’ll definitely be back.
Will you pay more than Ikea? Yes. Will you get what you pay for? Yes.

The customer service here has gone so far downhill it’s infuriating!
In 2012 MG+BW did a great job helping me furnish my house. I was pleased with both the customer service and the product. So this year when I needed a housewarming gift for my brother, I immediately returned to MG+BW. And I’m sorry I did…
Although I was told shipping would take 2 to 3 weeks, the glass dish arrived 4 weeks later, shattered in pieces. I called MG+BW and was assured a replacement would be sent immediately, although shipping may take another 2 to 3 weeks. A week after this conversation (while I was under the impression the replacement dish was already in transit) I received a call from the same associate, stating the item couldn’t be replaced until I emailed him pictures of the broken one. Thankfully, my brother had taken pictures a week earlier, otherwise we would have been *really* out of luck.
When 3 weeks later the replacement still had not arrived, I called again. I received apologies for the delay and was told the item was in the warehouse and would be sent by 2-​day shipping immediately. So you can imagine I was upset when another week went by and still no package! Called again. More apologies. Same story. At the warehouse. Will send immediately via 2-​day shipping. The package finally arrived 4 days later. And for all the hassle, delay, and misinformation, the manager, Nicole, compensated me with an insulting 5% discount, which covered the cost of shipping. Yay!

Update: I spoke with the manager, who refunded a significant amount of the purchase price, and the couch has now arrived — late, but at least it’s the right couch and fabric… I’m very happy with the quality, but I might think again about ordering at this location.

We absolutely loved our shopping experience here. Just moved into town and needed to furnish our new apartment. Never heard of MG+BW, but a friend suggested we stop by. We are so glad we did.
Angela was there to help is that night, and she was such a delight. She let us browse a bit, allowing us room to get familiar with their gorgeous inventory. Then we started asking her lots of questions, which she competently answered with a great deal of knowledge about the style, manufacturing methods, and even lots of details about the history and culture of the company. She quite literally sold us the deluxe sleeper sofa we eventually purchased by informing us of its award-​winning design and demonstrating it. She even let us lay on it right there in the store. She made it so much fun, rolling with our lame jokes and throwing in a few of her own.
The furniture is just our taste. We think it’s beautiful – with a mid-​century modern influence we find delightful. And the staff is a pure pleasure to work and play with. We’ve been back a handful of times to finalize our selections, and everyone we’ve interacted with have made us feel so happy and welcome. Too bad furniture isn’t the kind of thing you purchase on a regular basis, cuz we really like hanging out there!
Along with Angela, Michael was more than helpful and accommodating, Ryan the manager was fantastic to deal with, Erin was so fun and charming, and Melissa was a blast, as well as very thoroughly versed in the inventory and options. We laughed and gabbed and joshed our way to an entire living room of swanky new furniture. We couldn’t recommend Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams more highly.

I don’t usually write reviews but I’ve had good experiences with the salespeople here the few times I went in the store. From my experience, their sales associates are great at follow up even when you don’t end up buying anything (so far, I’ve met Anna-​unsure if she’s still there, Melissa, and Karen). I finally bought two lamps during their floor sample/​clearance sale this month. The sales associate Karen was especially helpful and responsive, and followed up with my questions. Their merchandise is pricey but the clearance sale is definitely a good deal!

Very positive experience here. Went in a couple times, really enjoyed all the customizing we could do, and ordered our couch. It came within the time frame quoted up front, and we’re really happy with it.
As for the reviews about being ignored by sales staff, I always take that kind of review with a grain of salt. One person’s «attentive» is another person’s «high pressure,» and vice versa I suppose. But then again, I’m the kind of person who goes up and talks to a sales person if I have a question, rather than sulking in silence. For the record, the staff was friendly and helpful. And since some seem to think it matters, I suppose it’s worth mentioning we’re 28 and were dressed super casual when we went.

After reading previous reviews I felt obligate to share my extremely positive experience at Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams. Yesterday, while waiting for a family member having a surgical procedure, I decided to do a little window shopping downtown. I passed by MG&BW and figured since I’ll be moving into a new home next month maybe I’ll take a look at some furniture. I was immediately approached by two sales members, one who even appeared to be on break, asking if I needed any help. I let them know i was just looking and had no intention on buying that day, just getting ideas, (wind out of the sails of any sales person) but both staff members continued to walk me through the store and address all of my questions, even offered me coffee while I browsed!
After about 10 minutes I absolutely fell in love with a particular set and was amazed at the immediate knowledge the staff had on it! I was so impressed by the furniture and the staff that I WILL be back next month to buy from them!
I honestly didn’t encounter any of the problems that previous reviewers had, not to negate their experiences. I also quite enjoyed the background music, Christmas songs by contemporary modern artists, par for the course in any furniture store, Hahahaha!

Not sure what the issue was with the two previous posts. We shopped here today and had a fantastic experience. There were three sales people who couldn’t be more helpful. Ryan and Erin (perhaps the tall, improbably blond, saleswoman previously mentioned) were extremely helpful and attentive. I’ve always liked Mitchell Gold designs. We’ve often shopped their South Coast Plaza store in Southern California. The staff there has been top notch, too.
We were shopping their floor samples, in advance of their new line-​up being delivered next week. Ryan was very informative and excited about the new line-​up. Looks like they’re getting a collection of what Ryan describes as British Modern. Can’t wait to see it.
We bought a nice floor-​sample lamp called Marilyn. As a floor sample, we paid about half of what the usual price would be. The lamp was in perfect condition, and looks great in our home. Erin explained that the floor samples are actually items that were in the warehouse, unused, but needed to be moved for the new line-​up.
Erin also gave us a great tip for a local place to eat. I know finding a good restaurant isn’t hard in Portland, but her recommendation of «Andina» was spot-​on for what we wanted. I just posted a review of Andina a few minutes ago.
When we returned, the place was hopping with customers, and the staff had its hands full attending to them. Yet, Ryan promptly wrapped up our lamp and got us on our way.
I’ve always liked the pieces at Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams. And, I’ve always liked the way they appreciate their customers and their staff. I think it helps the store retain good employees. I would definitely recommend this store to anyone looking for nice design that’s off the beaten Pottery Barn /​West Elm path.

Julie M is right about inattentive and uninterested salespeople, but it extends to middle aged folks, not just the young. I found a sofa that I very likely would’ve purchased, but the closest acknowledgment to my existence in the showroom was a look of disdain from a tall, improbably blond, saleswoman. (It shouldn’t make any difference, but I wasn’t shabbily dressed, either.) Two of the three salespeople appeared not be involved with customers, but looked at me blankly as I walked by them several times.
The company’s website shows a wide choice of appealing contemporary furniture styles, but the store itself contains relatively few.
Between the indifferent (at best) salespeople and annoying Muzak, I imagine a fair number of potential customers simply give up and walk out of the store a tad annoyed, as I did.

Not sure what happened to Julie M., but we’re in the same age range and haven’t had a problem with the staff. My husband and I have purchased two sofas and chairs from MG+BW in the past couple of years, and frankly, we look pretty awful (we have two boys under two). I usually have on a pair of outdated jeans and my husband usually has on the world’s most wrinkled shirt.
I was a bit worried we wouldn’t be taken seriously when we went in, but we were greeted and treated just fine. Not fawning — this is a furniture store, after all — but professionally. The furniture itself can’t be beat, and the yearly closeout sale is the best bargain this side of the Mississippi.

I love the furniture in this store, but unfortunately, the staff decided that I shouldn’t be able to purchase it.
I went into the MGBW on Burnside 3 times in attempt to look at living room furniture.
1^st time: I went in with my boyfriend. There were 3 sales associates and NO other customers in the store, and yet we were never approached or even greeted by the staff.
2^nd time: I went in with my boyfriend’s mother, grandmother, and aunt. Suddenly we had 2 sales staff working with us. I chose a sofa and chair, got quotes and samples, and said I’d be back with my boyfriend for him to check it out and make the purchase. The sales associate even followed up with me via email later.
3^rd time: I took my BF in to sit on the couch and make the purchase. At the time, there were 2 other customers in the store and 3 sales staff. There was another couple working with a sales associate, sitting and chatting on the couch we were there to check out. Even when we went and stood by the couch, the sales associate never even acknowledged us. I finally approached one of the sales people (the same one that assisted me in my 2^nd visit) and explained we were back to purchase the couch. She said she’d be back with me in a minute, and went to help another customer instead.
After 15 minutes of standing in the store without being helped (there was still another sales associate just standing around), we walked out and found essentially the same couch at Pottery Barn for about ½ the price.
I’ve heard from other people my age (25 – 30) that they’ve been snubbed in the store, as well. Don’t waste your time or money on this place.
